Mirena and no periods

StealthPolarBear · 22/01/2020 22:07

I've had a mirena since 2013, replaced Jan 2019 and periods were incredibly light but regular.
I now haven't had one since mid December and am getting worried but it looks like no periods is common.
How do I know what's mirena no periods and when I should be worried? Even if I test, how can I be sure?
I'm also 40 so could be the menopause.

Normal in a significant proportion.

Enjoy !
If you were menopausal you’d get other symptoms eg flushes. You’d be very unlikely to get away with no symptoms.

Helenluvsrob · 22/01/2020 22:09

As long as it hasn’t fallen out 😱

StealthPolarBear · 22/01/2020 22:09

I'm worried about pregnancy
Am I being silly

I had no periods for 5 years apart from occasional spotting

diamondsandrose · 22/01/2020 22:10

Normal
Enjoy! It's great Smile

StealthPolarBear · 22/01/2020 22:11

Phew
Yes my periods have been spotting more than anything but they've lasted a few days and been regular.

Normal!

If you usually have a light period and have now stopped, it might be worth doing a pregnancy test to put your mind at rest.

I’m on my 4th Mirena, and haven’t had a period in 10 years, but I do have a friend who got pregnant with one, although she’d been bleeding heavily with it. It suppresses ovulation in the majority of women, but not all.

ExCwmbranDweller · 22/01/2020 22:14

It's really hard because you have to just trust it in a way. If it helps I am on my 4th mirena and have had about 2 periods in the last 18 years and only one pregnancy which occurred about 2 weeks after the removal of my second coil and was entirely planned. My next one will be my last and the hope is I'll use it to to surf through the menopause with slightly reduced symptoms and then be done.

Quite excited at the idea that there is now light at the end of the hormonal contraception tunnel.

Yoyomar · 22/01/2020 22:14

I think you will just get used to no periods and stop worrying.
When my periods first stopped on the Mirena I used to worry about being pregnant, but after a few months it became the new normal and I stopped worrying about it.
I do however wonder how I'll know when I reach the menopause (I'm 43) but perhaps the previous poster was right and all the other menopausal symptoms will kick in and I'll be in no doubt Grin

VanCleefArpels · 22/01/2020 22:15

I have had no periods for 18 years on Mirena. It’s the absolute best thing in the world as far as I’m concerned.

VanCleefArpels · 22/01/2020 22:17

@Yoyomar I can confirm that when you reach (Peri) menopause there will be plenty of other clues!!

StealthPolarBear · 22/01/2020 22:22

Or I could just wait eight months and see if a baby comes out

Yes, the extra surprise option, go for it Grin

You've reminded me that I did do quite a few pregnancy tests whilst I got used to the idea of no periods.

Impatientwino · 22/01/2020 22:27

I had no periods with Mirena. I miss that! DH had a vasectomy after we'd had our DC but I'd quite like another Mirena just to stop my periods again!!

fluffysocksgoodbookwine · 22/01/2020 22:28

My friend had twins! That might be more of a surprise than you bargained for! ConfusedGrin

ExpletiveDelighted · 22/01/2020 22:30

I'm on my second, haven't had a period for over ten years and no menopause symptoms despite being in my early 50s. Love it!

Sahara123 · 22/01/2020 22:36

I’ve had several over about15 years. After the first year my periods stopped completely. Over the years I had blood tests which confirmed I was peri menopausal, then menopausal. My final coil was taken out a couple of years ago, I had had no menopausal symptoms whatsoever !
Sailed through the whole thing without even knowing.
Brilliant thing.

SirB0bby · 22/01/2020 22:36

Im in my 50's and haven't had a period in years. I've just started having hot flushes and have trouble loosing weight so I'm pretty sure I'm going through the menopause.

Fresh01 · 22/01/2020 22:41

I have had no periods in 8 years with Mirena coil, which is great as they were getting heavier after each child.

ExCwmbranDweller · 22/01/2020 23:22

Sahara123 you are now my life goal, really hoping for the same.

ColourMyDreams · 23/01/2020 00:15

I've had a mirena and been period free due to that since 2001. Fab 😁
I'm pushing 60, still got the last one inserted and couldn't tell you if I've had the menopause or not.

VanGoghsDog · 23/01/2020 00:21

I'm 52 this year, my third coil ends Feb next year.

I always had light periods with the coil but they never stopped fully. I would miss a month or two, then go back to regular. So, having them and then not after years seems normal.

But, I also did a lot of pregnancy tests because you really can't know for sure! And I needed to know early if it did happen. Never was though.

Still get periods by the way, not every month but not infrequent enough to say I've gone through Meno.

Helenluvsrob · 23/01/2020 08:48

Worried about pregnancy - do a test and be sure. Mirena failure is very rare - as long as not fallen out

StealthPolarBear · 23/01/2020 17:24

Really helpful thank you om a lot less stressed
