Oxford family restaurant?

Can anyone recommend a restaurant for us to have dinner in on Friday? We're having a day trip so it's a treat- so not haute cuisine but also not a cafe!

We'd prefer to avoid chains if poss.

I've seen a Greek restaurant (Greek Taverna I think) with mixed reviews online. Anyone with experience of this, or any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Browns is a chain....How about The Cherwell Boathouse?

Browns is a chain..

And your point is?

Clawdy · 01/01/2020 19:15

The OP said they wanted to avoid chain restaurants.

Mamma Mia Summertown

Pompette practically next to Mamma Mia...it’s decent imho

Thanks Clawdy for pointing out OP’s original request

@MyBlueMoonbeam to be fair Browns is a very small chain compared to Cafe Rouge,etc,. I suggested Browns too as it’s well established in Oxford and I’d regarded with affection by those of us who grew up there. It’s where our family meet up for special occasions such as people moving away and/or returning. It’s a lovely restaurant.

Pierre Victoire gets my vote too! Lovely little place on one of the loveliest streets in Oxford. Gives you an excuse to wander up to the edge of Jericho, which is worthwhile.

If I was sans-children, I'd also be popping into Duke of Cambridge for a cocktail on my way out too. Although there is a g&ds (ice cream shop) opposite which would do as a second choice!

@funmummy48

Ditto - I have fond memories of Browns going back to the 80s 😊

Thank you Mybluemoon. I too love Browns. It was great to take the children there too when they were little as it didn’t matter if they were too noisy!

@Rugbycomet 😊

Thank you so much for your help everyone!

Today we went to La Cucina and it was fantastic. Delicious starter - some calamari and Italian meats, pizzas for main and no room sadly for pud! The pizzas were very generous and richly made. And excellent service.

I'd highly recommend.

And it was just near the bus stop to hop on to go back to the park and ride- win win.

Thanks for the recommendation!
