Oxford family restaurant?

Can anyone recommend a restaurant for us to have dinner in on Friday? We're having a day trip so it's a treat- so not haute cuisine but also not a cafe!

We'd prefer to avoid chains if poss.

I've seen a Greek restaurant (Greek Taverna I think) with mixed reviews online. Anyone with experience of this, or any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Parsonage Grill and Quod are good if you want something a little bit special. Branca is more every day, but still great with kids.

Clawdy · 31/12/2019 17:52

Quod is good, nice food and great ambience.

mumdom · 31/12/2019 18:10

Branca’s is good with kids but it’s on a par with Pizza Express or a Carluccio’s food-wise - predictable and satisfying but not much of a treat.

Brown’s the same, but good for steak or brunch.

Chiang Mai Kitchen is Thai food and delicious.

mumdom · 31/12/2019 18:14

Parsonage is too formal for kids, I would say. Mine are no strangers to fine dining being London brats, but could see the other diners shuddering at their presence Grin.

The Plough on Cornmarket Street, is nice for a lunchtime treat or if you want something more informal try the Handlebar. There’s also Turl Street kitchen which is good although will probably require a reservation - all of these are in the centre.

gerbo · 31/12/2019 18:33

Thanks all, much appreciated.

Whilst searching I've come across the White Rabbit pub which serves fantastic looking pizzas- has anyone been? Annoyingly you can't book....

ChiAng Mai kitchen Is absolutely lovely.

A small chain but Comptoir Libanais is good.

And Mowgli serve street food in Westgate.

And I can't remember when it's open on a Friday but the food stalls at Gloucester Green market are and I hate this word amazing. Although it might be a bit chilly for kids, sitting outside scoffing street food in January.

We go to Brown's or to Mamma Mia's in Summertown if we're in Oxford.

Takeittotheboss · 31/12/2019 18:45

Pierre Victorie's

Kernowgal · 31/12/2019 18:46

La Cucina on St Clements. Italian classics, fantastic pizza. Get a table in the back near the kitchen. Such a great place and only a short walk from the centre.

Wauden · 31/12/2019 19:05

Pierre Victoire is not part of a chain and the food is good.

There's a good Lebanese place on the ground floor of the Westgate Centre.
The Nosebag in St Michael's St is an Oxford institution, not in a chain. Good food and drinks.

Blingismything · 31/12/2019 19:13

The Art Cafe is good for coffee and cake. Malmaison food is good.

Wauden · 31/12/2019 19:13

The Parsonage and Quod are not really for children.

I enjoy the restaurant in the basement of the castle quarter next to the hotel and the children would enjoy the castle and the very old and brilliant former prison, which has excellent guided tours. There is also a nice cafe just near there by the castle mound which you can walk up. Also a good gift shop good for kids. It's an area well worth exploring and not so full of tour groups.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 31/12/2019 19:17

Browns is a safe choice

NeedMoreMountains · 31/12/2019 19:22

We all love Pho on the roof in Westgate. They are a chain I guess but really kid friendly and yummy food

NeedMoreMountains · 31/12/2019 19:24

Or if out East Oxford past Magdalen bridge then both Magdalen Arms and Chester Arms have great food and kid friendly (Magdalen Arms bigger menu)

pigglypug · 31/12/2019 19:26

Another one for Pierre Victoire!

gerbo · 31/12/2019 19:32

Wow, thanks for all the ideas. I'll have a good look online. Lots of choice!

And another vote for Pierre Victoire! Been a while since I’ve been in Oxford but it’s delicious

p0rridge · 31/12/2019 19:55

Pierre Victoire! Nice set menus but a good a la carte as well, lovely food, and friendly staff. It's a little out of the town centre in Jericho but definitely worth going. You'll need to book!

PermanentTemporary · 31/12/2019 20:00

Agree with La Cucina. Havent tried the fish restaurant in st Clements but it looks nice. St Clements is very easy by bus or a nice stroll over magdalen bridge.

White rabbit does have great pizza but its tiny. Students not here but still likely to be packed, I wouldnt go with young kids personally. Atomic pizza on the cowley road is v kid friendly but not a luxury experience.

Gustavo1 · 31/12/2019 20:01

I’ve been to the quod lots of times with my children who are all under 5 and they have never been anything other than welcoming and friendly. Always at lunch rather than in an evening though. There is a lovely pizza place on George Street called Franco manca which I really rate for eating with kids too.

Rory786 · 31/12/2019 20:55

I live in Oxford and if you can venture a bit to East Oxford there is a gorgeous Turkish restaurant called Anteps. Lovely healthy yet delicious tasting food. Their complimentry pillowy Turkish bread with dip is gorgeous!

Ricekrispie22 · 01/01/2020 16:02

The Parsonage and Quod are not really for children.

They have a children’s menu and have always been more than welcoming when my clan bowl in.
