Dry January 2020. A new relationship with alcohol. Who’s joining me?

It’s that time again!
I did my first dry January around 5 years ago, having seen it on here. It was a great thing to do: really helped my get control of my drinking. Since then I’ve done it every year, along with at least one or two other dry months.

DJ may help you:
Lose weight. ...
Get better skin. ...
Make healthier food choices. ...
Save money. ...
Sleep better. ...
Have more energy. ...
Improve your mood. ...
Improve your general health

and make you feel virtuous!

It’s not necessarily easy though, so it’s good to have support; especially if you’re feeling week and like you may give up. We can support each other here.

Am doing quite a line in Ginger Beer now. Am feeling very much better in the mornings - am keeping it up so far!

BettyJean · 04/01/2020 19:48

@Spitsandspots

Make sure you stay well hydrated, herbal tea, water, squash. Whatever, as long as it’s not alcohol.

@CilantroChili
Thats the good thing about wagons, you can get straight back on again.
Plenty space on this wagon trail anytime 🚃🚃🚃

IME a thumping headache is normal for a bit, Stay well hydrated and take pills!

MusicToMyEars800 · 04/01/2020 19:59

It’s my first dry January, I want to stay strong and see it through, I’m already struggling tonight as I would normally have a bottle of wine and enjoy Saturday night tv, but going with tea and juice and trying not to think about drinking

myhandsareverycold · 04/01/2020 19:59

I find it amazing how much extra time I seem to have. I've achieved so much today and found solace in a bottle of lightly sparking water.

2MapleMuffins · 04/01/2020 20:00

Oh and the exhaustion- last year I felt it was similar to the sheer exhuastion of early pregnancy. It was for me anyway.

This year it is loads better... although i am about to go to bed!

dementedma · 04/01/2020 20:00

2maple I never thought of that. I found a few pairs minus backs so will order some. It wa very therapeutic fiddly work but worth it as even the worst tarnished look brand new.
Am now in bed with hot chocolate. Day 4 done

Wolfff · 04/01/2020 20:05

I did feel a little tempted as I found a couple of bottles of wine in a cupboard earlier. But I motivated myself as it's only 4 Jan! I have lost about 5lbs since Wednesday - doing intermittent fasting.

Last night I played a PS4 game under DD2's tuition. Tonight I will distract myself with my side job that is online and reading one of the books I downloaded and never read.

feelingthesqueeze · 04/01/2020 20:28

Late joiner to the party please (check my bags.... they are AF!)
I have stressy day/needs wine habit. Friday was difficult and i was on verge of purchasing bottle of wine, but refrained yay! I've tried AF Jan couple of times before and never managed it so hoping for better this time.

imamearcat · 04/01/2020 20:39

Feeling quite pleased with myself as been to the pub for a meal yesterday and today and managed to have Diet Coke.💪

VinoEsmeralda · 04/01/2020 20:45

Is anybody else crave sugar? I generally eat healthy and v little sugar but am really fancy ice cream...

I have so much more time, normally once the wine opens, all activity stops.. Day 4 done, 1st weekend done!

MusicToMyEars800 · 04/01/2020 20:50

I have found myself craving more sugar, like biscuits and chocolate which is not like me as I don’t generally eat much of it at all

BettyJean · 04/01/2020 20:59

You may have a mild addiction to the sugar found in alcohol.

Sugar cravings are quite common in people who go cold turkey from alcohol, especially if you’ve over done it a bit in December.

Kimlek · 04/01/2020 21:08

I really wanted a drink tonight!! But it passed... so that’s 4 night AF, which I don’t think I’ve ever done before!

MusicToMyEars800 · 04/01/2020 21:11

The longest I managed was 3 weeks and that was earlier in the year, I have struggled with cravings tonight but staying strong with the apple
And mango juice

MusicToMyEars800 · 04/01/2020 21:11

Earlier last year even

Blaziken · 04/01/2020 21:15

Just had my usual takeaway curry but with no wine! Very please. I've got some Fentiman's rose lemonade which is delicious. Still feeling anxious though, I really hope this passes soon.

Thankssomuch · 04/01/2020 21:18

blaziken just done exactly the same!

Vik1ng · 04/01/2020 21:51

Anyone not feeling great in the mornings despite no alcohol? This morning I was so exhausted I slept through my alarm. When I eventually got up my body was full of aches and pains. On the plus side, I’ve just got home (sober) from a party that had free flowing fizz. Tucked up in bed now with a brew ☕️

MusicToMyEars800 · 04/01/2020 21:54

Well done for staying strong at a party! I get the rubbish feeling in the mornings too even with no alcohol I’m hoping it will pass

Blaziken · 04/01/2020 22:00

Well done on the party! I would find that difficult.

I have been sleeping well but feeling sluggish all day. I think I read on the dry january blog that it goes away in the second week.

KindaEnjoySchoolHolidays · 04/01/2020 22:15

I managed tonight with a couple of glasses of alcohol free white wine from Sainsbury’s. It was fine with a meal - I think the second glass tasted a bit more sugary - but it satisfied the craving.
I’ve been having mineral water rest of the time because trying to save calories - but it is Saturday.

Congratulations to everyone else - even if you have a blip it sounds like we are all drinking less than our normal. That’s a good thing

Just keep mentioning Fatty Liver - it helps with the motivation!

Longdistance · 04/01/2020 22:32

Hello 👋🏼

I do dry January every year. I’m a big drinker as we’re rugby people. I suffer with insomnia so am hoping this will help.

My head is a lot clearer but am finding I’m peeing a lot. Anyone else?

Dh is being good in my presence and not drinking.

It’s my birthday at the end of the month so that’s my cut off point.

IzzyDeNero · 04/01/2020 22:44

So got through Saturday night but was cooking earlier and craved a glass of red wine (or 3) which I would normally have while I'm cooking. It did pass though and I had sparkling water instead. Also, once I've eaten a meal I'm not bothered - it's that early evening time when I really miss having a drink. I didn't honestly think I'd keep it up so really happy I've got to day 4.
