Christmas Day, what didn't go to plan? We ended up in A & E.

DH slipped on the stairs this morning just as we were about to go to church.............I knew from the scream that it was bad! Packed the kids off to my mum and off we went to A & E. DH has a badly broken ankle which had to be manipulated and he is now in a cast - fracture clinic on Friday and it's likely he will need an operation to stabilise the spiral fracture to his fibular.
Staff at the hospital were amazing and we were back at my mums within 2 hours in time for Christmas Dinner.

We are lucky nothing bad has happened except for the dog jumping up and licking the left over beef joint that was to be eaten cold tomorrow. Even my cheesecake which had looked like it was going to be a disaster actually tasted very good even if it didn't look great.

nameymcnamechangeagain · 25/12/2019 20:03

Sorry to about your partners ankle! My
Partner left and the oven died! Winning 🤦🏻‍♀️

LarkDescending · 25/12/2019 20:05

Oh dear OP - hope he’s fixed soon.

The unexpected development at our family gathering was that my 86yo father couldn’t keep his trousers up. Turns out he no longer has any trousers which do up at the waist (or anywhere near). Anyone with tips on where to find comfortable but smartish stretch trousers with elasticated waists for apple-shaped elderly gentlemen, let me know!

On the way home this evening I narrowly missed being caught up in a nasty car crash - the car in front of me turned right to go into a Shell garage, but someone speeding the other way crashed into it as it crossed their lane and they both spun across the road. Lots of damage and flying debris. We weren’t affected, but stopped to help and call 999 etc. An ambulance arrived very quickly. Fortunately it looked as though injuries were not too serious.

Thelnebriati · 25/12/2019 20:09

Not as bad as others, but as soon as the chemist is open I have to go buy Ovex again Xmas Envy

Enko · 25/12/2019 20:09

I realised halfway through prepping that we did no get parsnips delivered.

All in all, we have had a lovely Christmas.

DukeChatsworth · 25/12/2019 20:13

I was woken early by the burglar alarm going off due to a fault - twice! Later on I fell off the couch and grazed my elbow! I’d not even had a drink by then either!

Straycatstrut · 25/12/2019 20:14

Spent all morning crying as I'm so exhausted having done everything + Christmas as a single parent for the first time and my 7yo and 3yo spent the morning screaming, fighting and throwing their presents around. I was sobbing my heart out in front of them. I gave up on Christmas dinner.

Went better after that thankfully- went out for a big run around the park with my mum&dad and our puppy. Weather was great. Then back to theirs for a buffet and some amazing funny party games planned by my dad.

Changes are needed though I need more out of life.

CornishPorsche · 25/12/2019 20:17

Migraine on Xmas Eve.
Migraine on Xmas Day.

Currently finishing a nap to try to clear my head. I think I'm dehydrated, not enough sleep, (the house is like a furnace due to my mother's inability to cope with anything under 22c) and too little fresh air each day.

However dinner was lush and I'm going for 3rds in a bit.

Hope your DH isn't in too much pain OP!

OhBigHairyBollocks · 25/12/2019 20:19

FIL died on Friday afternoon quite suddenly. DHs siblings aren't the most.. Helpful shall we say, and so he has spent the majority for this week going through FILs address book to inform people. Whilst also being the emotional dumping ground for his siblings, and having to do legal bits as well.
To top it all off I woke up with a stomach bug and so DH has been running round like a blue arsed fly looking after me, entertaining the DC and cooking an entire Christmas Dinner.

We have had some bad patches this year in our marriage but he is a bloody superstar sometimes.

ssd · 25/12/2019 20:20

I didn't make enough food for Xmas Dinner. I'm a bit gutted. Teens here who didn't get enough to eat then argued a bit at the table. Ds1 sniggering at ds2. Am a bit gutted.

TheoriginalLEM · 25/12/2019 20:20

We forgot the carrots! We went out to fetch some and walked home along the beach- dd2 said it was best ever xmas. First time we've done a xmas walk, so have vowed to forget something every year.

Flowers and Wine to those of you who've had rubbish days

andannabegins · 25/12/2019 20:26

I have flu. I started feeling awful on the 22nd and hoped I would pick up by today but still can't get out of bed for too long. Christmas dinner has been postponed until tomorrow, I'm hoping to make it up and be capable of food by then

HelpIcantfindaname · 25/12/2019 21:01

Nothing major....last night the dog pinched Santa's mince pie (she's never pinched food off a table before, plus DD11 was in room)...luckily she only got the pastry off the top...I got the dust buster to clean the crumbs off the rug, the kitten was trying to eat the crumbs...she got a shock when the Hoover started & sped off with all claws scratching right across my bare foot.
Then I was getting a huge box of pressies off the top of the wardrobe & dropped it...but my arm broke its fall....sore bruised arm today.
Boyfriend arrived this a.m.....had been here a while & we went to get on with the rest of the dinner....and he suddenly realised he had forgotten the turkey...he cooked it at his cos I was cooking beef & pork. He lives 10 miles away but went to get the turkey. ..so I had to do the rest of the cooking ...he's a much better cook than me, but dinner was actually fine.

missperegrinespeculiar · 25/12/2019 21:02

A bit rubbish, extended family here who have been grumpy and frankly ungrateful, DH and I cooked lunch and dinner for 10 both yesterday and today, and will do so again tomorrow (they are staying), nobody ever said thank you, in fact, they complained all the time! to top it off, my 12 year old is now noticing this and has commented about them being rude and not caring about us, DSs and DH on the other hand were just lovely, helped out, were grateful for presents, I can't help thinking how bloody nice it would have been with just us, but they are elderly grandparents and great-uncles and aunties, so I feel obligated, they would be on their own without us, but my God, hard work! I am feeling a little tearful!

Rubyroost · 25/12/2019 21:02

@andannabegins snap, flu is in our household too. But I don't have it, you'll be lucky if you make it up. We've frozen the meat and postponed until everyone feels better.. Whenever that is.

Rubyroost · 25/12/2019 21:03

@missperegrinespeculiar to top it all off?

Your 12 year old sounds great.

stripeypillowcase · 25/12/2019 21:04

good recovery to all those needing medical help today. Flowers

we had an incident with a beef joint & muddy puddle. but other than feeling like never ever needing food ever again, ever. it has been a lovely day.

PrettyPurse · 25/12/2019 21:14

@KitKat1985 - really need to put DC first. Christmas is such a huge trigger.

Ds1 is now 16yrs and he cope much better now. FB timehop showed Christmas from a few years ago and the stress on my sons face was so visible.

I look back now and realise that l didn't handle things well for him and wanted to do what my older family members wanted instead of what my DS needed.

ncge · 25/12/2019 21:17

Dinner went wrong - god knows how but no gravy, chicken dry as a bone, parsnips were cold . Roasties not cooked . I don’t know where went so wrong !! Cheesecake was lush though . Now sitting watching G&S wondering how to make it better ... going to my nanas for Hogmanay so hopefully that’s better !!

Thanks @PrettyPurse. I think braces have been doing enough until today, but have given up the ghost. Also there is a gaping issue in the front which means a move from a fly style to a pull-on style is required, I think! (He grudgingly agrees).

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 25/12/2019 21:28

The day itself went fine, then early evening DIL wanted to leave (she has work tomorrow), DS didn't (he doesn't). Ended up with them having a blazing row, DIL starting to pack the car and DS sitting down again declaring that he was staying at ours until tomorrow...

They did eventually sort themselves out and left together, but it put a bit of a crimp in an otherwise lovely relaxed Christmas.

Winterdaysarehere · 25/12/2019 21:33

Dd called round to drop off gifts for Santa to put out last night. Crashed her car on the way home. Car a right off. Dd is fine though shook up.. Dh like a hero was there in minutes!
Pat on the back to the insurance co that took the call late last night!

Nat6999 · 25/12/2019 21:44

I had a spiral fracture of my fibula, they put a back slab pot on for 48 hours, got told to keep it up as much as possible to reduce the swelling & then I went back & had a full cast put on after they decided the bone was lined up properly. Try to not worry until friday, keep up with pain relief & keep his ankle up as much as possible.

PrettyPurse · 25/12/2019 22:00

@LarkDescending whilst you source some trousers, what about the bump expanders pregnant ladies use as they have a panel built in for the gap.

Try disability sites for pull up smart clothing.
