Do you have shops open on Christmas Day?

Popped into my favoured corner shop earlier, and asked about their Christmas opening hours.
They're opening every day as usual, and I know of at least one other shop that is, boxing day, day after NYD all the supermarkets are open too.
I live in a small Scottish town.
Do you have shops open, will you use them?

Our village shop is open all throughout Christmas. To be honest it’s so expensive it doesn’t get much use throughout the rest of the year!

Ffsnosexallowed · 23/12/2019 13:52

A couple of the corner shops will be open, I don't intend to be shopping on Christmas day but recognise that not everyone celebrates Christmas.

WorraLiberty · 23/12/2019 13:54

My local general store/off licence will be open from about 10.30am til about 8 or 9pm.

Local newsagents from about 6am til 1.30pm.

No I probably won't use them although I have in the past when the kids have been bought presents/toys but no batteries!

I often chat to the owners and the woman today was saying its actually a busy day for them, in particular for batteries!
I might pop in, I'm on my own on Christmas Day anyway, (and fine with it).
I'm assuming they don't celebrate Christmas but I've got them a Happy New Year card to drop in on NYD, as they're always so helpful.

A newsagent near me is open. The owners are Muslim and don't celebrate Christmas. I won't be shopping on Christmas day though!

Ginfordinner · 23/12/2019 14:00

None where I live. People shouldn't need to go shopping on Christmas day.

LoseLooseLucy · 23/12/2019 14:02

My local shop will be open till 6pm, although I'm not planning to use it.

WorraLiberty · 23/12/2019 14:04

Why? Not everyone celebrates Christmas.

SquirmOfEels · 23/12/2019 14:07

Local petrol station and its shop will be open for a few hours in the morning.

The corner shop which used to open has unfortunately closed down (rent hike) which is a pity, both becuse it was lovely all year and secondly because it was my saviour the year we ran out of tonic

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/12/2019 14:11

I'm not going to do a big shop, but there's a couple of bits I could do with before Dd arrives on Boxing Day, so why not give the custom to a shop I know, who have chosen to open on Christmas Day, who are polite and friendly to me all year round?

No, nothing is open around here at all

CoffeeCoinnesseur · 23/12/2019 14:14

My local Spar is open 7am to 10.30am.

Badabingbadabum · 23/12/2019 14:14

We used to live by two shops which never closed. We mostly used them for alcohol but also great for christmas day emergency milk or cat food. And they had loads of custom from people nearby who don't celebrate christmas and just wanted a paper and a tin of chopped tomatoes or something.

Ginfordinner · 23/12/2019 14:14

It has nothing to do with celebrating Christmas, but being organised enough that you can manage without going shopping for one day. In my childhood shops were closed every Sunday. We managed.

AhoyMrBeaver · 23/12/2019 14:15

One of the shops in my village opens because the family that owns it doesn't celebrate Christmas. The owner was telling me a couple of weeks ago that they get quite a few people calling in just to pass the time of day, maybe lonely people or those who need a break from the family. The pub opens for a couple of hours as well, but I suppose that doesn't appeal to everyone.

Pilot12 · 23/12/2019 14:15

Yes, the Muslim owned corner shops and newsagents are open where I live (Edinburgh).

AdoptedBumpkin · 23/12/2019 14:16

We only have one village shop which is presumably closed.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 23/12/2019 14:18

We have 1 shop in the village here and they open for 2 hours Christmas Day afternoon.

I’ve never needed to go Christmas Day but the owners tell me they do a good turn mainly for batteries, butter and cigarettes

DowntonCrabby · 23/12/2019 14:20

Yes, the spar and newsagent/shop. Both open 6am-2pm. We have gone in in the past but shouldn’t need to this year.

avocadochocolate · 23/12/2019 14:20

I grew up in the 1980s an area with a large Muslim population so all the local small shops were open on Christmas Day, which was fantastic because we'd nearly always forgotten to buy the cream or some other thing. Where I live now, I doubt any of the shops will be open.

BacktoMA · 23/12/2019 14:22

Our village shop opens 10-2.

JumpyLiz · 23/12/2019 14:24

But why would you have to if you don’t celebrate Xmas? It’s just another day.

ClientListQueen · 23/12/2019 14:26

Yes local garage. Never closes. Even when they get robbed they're open again ConfusedGrin
You can go in and they're all "yes man with machete this morning, oh well"

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/12/2019 14:38

I'm not celebrating on Christmas Day.
No reason for me not to go to an open shop.
