Do you have shops open on Christmas Day?

Popped into my favoured corner shop earlier, and asked about their Christmas opening hours.
They're opening every day as usual, and I know of at least one other shop that is, boxing day, day after NYD all the supermarkets are open too.
I live in a small Scottish town.
Do you have shops open, will you use them?

I think that the local corner shop opens for a couple of hours but I've never needed to use it.

BiddyPop · 23/12/2019 14:43

Local petrol station is usually open, they are hindu and don't celebrate Christmas. It's usually quite busy too because a lot of people are driving around on Christmas and have forgotten to fill up with everything else going on. And it's handy for a bottle of milk or cream or batteries (or "I need some crisps" as an excuse to escape the house).

That said, while I know this from chatting to them over the years, I don't think I have ever gone in on Christmas Day, or Boxing Day either.

Celebelly · 23/12/2019 14:44

There's a guy round here who sells batteries on Christmas day Grin Literally just batteries of all shapes and sizes. I think the Chinese is open too.

My local shop is open for the morning I believe, and my local garage/shop is 24/7 even on Xmas day.
Apparently they both do quite a trade on Xmas day.

kinsss · 23/12/2019 14:50

Not in UK, so the only place open round here that I know of will be the busy garage on the main road which is open 24/7/365. Great for emergency supplies!

No take aways, no pubs, no restaurants, no corner shops etc. open. But I kind of like it like that. Of course there are hotels in the city centre open for stays and Christmas Dinner and the like, but a reservation would have been required six months ago together with a hefty credit limit on your card!

TheQueef · 23/12/2019 14:52

14! All within 3 miles of each other.
I never shop Xmas day though.

justdoityourself · 23/12/2019 14:58

Our local spar will be open. I don't think it's necessary but that's not to say I haven't popped in for emergency supplies in the past!

Megan2018 · 23/12/2019 15:02

We don’t even have many shops open on Sunday’s let alone over Christmas! No 24/7 shopping either. I live rurally and our nearest market town still closes Sunday with the exception of a few. I don’t believe anywhere open over Christmas. I won’t be going anywhere near a shop until the 28th at the earliest. I’ll only go out of the village tomorrow if the Ocado delivery is missing anything vital.
I think shopping over Christmas is pretty tragic tbh. Even in my nearest city, Leicester, which is majority non white an awful lot of the asian community embrace the break. I went in to the city for some shopping and in the queue I was talking to a muslim woman who had a pile of Christmas pudding and mince pies in her trolley, she was telling me her (non religious) Christmas plans.
Stay at home people!

You do realise that the majority of people who celebrate Christmas are not white? And people have plenty of very good reasons not to stay at home on Christmas day, up to and including working for the emergency services - and those people might need or want to buy things?

You know what I think it tragic? People who are so narrow minded they assume that their lifestyle and beliefs are the only/correct ones, and feel it is acceptable to attempt to inflict them on others.

kinsss · 23/12/2019 15:23

Oh please, let's not get into any arguments. The OP was about what was open in your area or not.

Simple question, simple answer. Spirit of goodwill hopefully will prevail!

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/12/2019 15:42

I'd honestly rather pop to my corner shoo for a loaf, some loo roll and a couple of tins of cat food on Christmas day than brave the supermarket tomorrow.
(And if I'm honest, a wee chat since I'm on my own)
I've a big shop coming on the 27th, and boxing day is a Chinese Takeaway.

Yes I thnk our local garage/Spar is open and there's another Spar in the town whcih is run by Asians, not sure what relgiion they are but they don't celebrate Christmas.

It wasn't that long ago that even motorway service stations were closed Christmas Day.

I think it's good, life doesn't stop just because it's Christmas. No you don't need to go shopping but you might urgently need pain killers.

Maybe one day we'll get a year round train service too.

Itsnotalwaysme · 23/12/2019 16:20

Only convenience stores and garages open here. 3 of which are within walking distance from my flat so its business at usual! Xmas Smile

teenagetantrums · 23/12/2019 16:25

Yes just one local . Open 9am till 3pm. When l lived in London was loads of local shops open all day. Very handy for forgotten batteries and extra wine. I think if you don't celebrate Christmas why not provide a service. I will be working Christmas morning anyway so might pop into shop to n way home to get forgotten bits

stickerqueen · 23/12/2019 16:29

most the shops on the high road will be open xmas day. I'm not planning on using them this year but have done in the past when dd got presents that needed batteries. This year I've brought 48 aa and 24aaa batteries fingers crossed that's enough.
I hate people buying gifts that need batteries when they don't supply them.

happypotamus · 23/12/2019 16:38

The nisa round the corner is open, and, I imagine, the M&S which is a petrol station shop will be too. I don't intend to go to any shops, but we might need batteries or milk or something.

Mooserp · 23/12/2019 16:41

I know my local little shop round the corner is. I think it's nice not to close everything down. Not everyone is celebrating and not everyone has family or friends to spend the day with.

I think we place far too much importance on the day.

Thesearmsofmine · 23/12/2019 16:43

Lots of shops and takeaways open as normal here. I live in an area with a large Muslim population. When it is Eid they close.

kinsss · 23/12/2019 17:17

Agree with @Mooserp.

WildRosie · 23/12/2019 17:24

Booze Buster (?) in Otley is open 12pm to 3pm on Christmas Day.

Skyejuly · 23/12/2019 17:25

Yes. Tiny village but the garage is open. Always handy.

Megan2018 · 23/12/2019 17:30

@SaskiaRembrandt
Get some Christmas spirit in you love, you sound like you need it. Patronising much.

LouLouLoupee · 23/12/2019 17:32

The Nisa and Spar in the village are open, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. I might use it as an excuse to escape the craziness for a bit but could survive without it.
One year I was so grateful for it being open as there was a disaster that they helped save.

Ginfordinner · 23/12/2019 17:46

I'm surprised that so many are open TBH. All very well if you don't celebrate Christmas, but I don't think it is fair to expect everyone who works in retail to work Christmas if they do celebrate it.

Obviously it is a different matter if you work for the emergency services.

ooooohbetty · 23/12/2019 17:53

Yes our corner shop will be open. It's run by an Asian family. Have used it in the past on Xmas day for batteries.
