I'm not even sure what the point in social media is?

Is there one?

Bananalanacake · 19/12/2019 22:59

to see what your ex boyfriends are up to (if they are on there).

Spinderellacutituponetime · 19/12/2019 23:01

Isn’t Mumsnet social media?

Thelnebriati · 19/12/2019 23:04

Why are we here? Where do we come from? Where do we go when our account is suspended?

AutumnRose1 · 19/12/2019 23:05

Well AFAIC you’re posting that on social media.

Teasville · 19/12/2019 23:05

To sell us stuff. It is first and foremost a marketing tool.

Borkins · 19/12/2019 23:05

What did we do before phones and internet?

I get the irony

OP posts:
AutumnRose1 · 19/12/2019 23:07

Well I wasn’t alive before phones

I spent a LOT of time on the phone as a teen!

SurpriseSparDay · 19/12/2019 23:08

Selling and the enablement of surveillance and thought control and punishing people with the loss of their jobs ...

Drizzzle · 19/12/2019 23:08

I don't think this is SM, is it? It's a forum...

SantaBeckett · 19/12/2019 23:09

We went to the pub and shock horror actually spoke to people .

Pippin2028 · 19/12/2019 23:10

To show off, make others feel inadequate, spy on each other! I think SM maybe was fun to begin with but it really has brought out the worst in us! It has probably caused more problems than anything

Hedgehogblues · 19/12/2019 23:10

I mostly use it to arrange my social life and share things I care about

HeronLanyon · 19/12/2019 23:11

We did go to the pub. We also knocked on friends doors and none really seemed to mind, plus when we made arrangement we kept to them. We also read, gardened, chatted, looked out of windows, thought a lot. Another world.

Dinosforall · 19/12/2019 23:11

To give people with tinfoil hats something else to moan about

BingoLittlesUncle · 19/12/2019 23:16

To give my SIL somewhere to moan about the election result so she isn't on the phone to DW for hours about it.

BackforGood · 19/12/2019 23:34

To keep in touch FAR more easily than when you had to write a letter, or walk down the road to the phone box and hope the other person was in.

SurpriseSparDay · 20/12/2019 00:22

Just as long as you realise BackforGood that your ’keeping in touch’ is being monetised and weaponised - and not for your good.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 20/12/2019 00:42

I use it to keep in touch and have a laugh with friends and family that are scattered all over the world. As I live on the other side of the world from most of them its an absolute godsend!

GingleJangleScarecrow · 20/12/2019 12:29

I don't think this is SM, is it? It's a forum

social media:
noun
websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

JacquesHammer · 20/12/2019 12:45

The point is whatever you want it to be!

What did we do before phones and internet?

No idea. Grew up with both.

museumum · 20/12/2019 12:49

Well at uni before phones you’d head out on a Friday night and literally walk round every pub and bar till you bumped into people you knew. Or gave up and went home.

And you either stayed in the town you grew up with everyone you knew and knew everything about you. Or you moved away and pretty much entirely lost touch.
Teenagers spent hours and hours on the one home phone on the stairs being shouted at by their parents cause nobody could get through.

NorthEndGal · 20/12/2019 12:49

So far today on sm, I have sold a piece of art, talked with family, shared some awesome videos, saw my adorable new niece, and got invited to a show.
Plus saw a wicked video about cor ids, my passion.
It's not even 9am yet.

None of this required make up, filtering, posturing, faking or anything.

Your sm is a reflection of you, your likes and choices.

museumum · 20/12/2019 12:50

We watched some absolute shite on tv as there was no choice.

museumum · 20/12/2019 12:51

Oh and we all read loads of really shite magazines. Properly crap they were and probably more toxic than Instagram
