If you haven't ordered/reserved a turkey is it too late to buy in store

Am thinking of getting a turkey crown on Monday morning.
Have a Waitrose , Asda , Lidl and Aldi near me.
DP is insistent we get it tomorrow but I would prefer to purchase Monday.
Any ideas or anyone has past experience of buying this close to Christmas?
Sorry for my naivety but it will be my first time of buying the bird for the dinner.

Well, you won't be on your own. I plan to shop on Sunday or Monday after work for everything for Xmas dinner.

We could yet be on pigs in blankets (already have them) and beans on toast....

AnyFucker · 19/12/2019 12:38

Aldi had lots of frozen turkeys yesterday

dementedpixie · 19/12/2019 12:39

Of course it's not too late (I hope!). We haven't bought ours yet

I’m panicking about this too. It’s the first year in twenty odd years of sound Xmas dinner that I haven’t ordered in advance. Am becoming more and more anxious about it by the day😬

Justmuddlingalong · 19/12/2019 12:41

Lidl have seemed to have cleared most of their fridges of non Christmas food this morning. Could hardly move for turkeys. And poinsettias.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 19/12/2019 12:42

All supermarkets currently have loads, your have no problem buying one

AnyFucker · 19/12/2019 12:42

Some of the stuff I want is not even available in Morrison's until 20th Dec

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 19/12/2019 12:43

Aldi's arrived today. You'd be mad to wait until Monday though, what would be tbe point?

fleariddenmoggie · 19/12/2019 12:45

I went to our local Sainsbury’s on Xmas eve last year and there were quite a few fresh turkeys left and other bargains. I suppose it depends on whether you are prepared to risk not having exactly what you want

Whiskers14 · 19/12/2019 12:46

I've never pre-ordered and I always get one on the 23rd/24th. In fact, I prefer choosing my own in person rather than leaving it to chance.

petrocellihouse · 19/12/2019 12:49

I wouldn’t buy one yet as a domestic fridge isn’t going to keep it as well as an industrial one.

NewName73 · 19/12/2019 12:50

As long as the use by date is after Dec 25th I don't see that it matters when you buy it.

amusedbush · 19/12/2019 12:52

We haven't bought any Christmas food yet. We'll go to Tesco on Saturday or Sunday.

Lookingforpizza · 19/12/2019 12:53

Lidl had frozen turkeys when I was in yesterday

Frosty26827 · 19/12/2019 13:02

Waitrose turkeys arrive in store today

Notlostjustexploring · 19/12/2019 13:32

I've planned nothing. I'm going out on either Sunday or Monday to pick it all up. I've done it in the past when I've had a sudden change in plans.

Shelves are always packed.

Thescrewinthetuna · 19/12/2019 13:33

I was out at a few shops this morning and loads of places (M&S, Aldi, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons) had plenty of turkeys

Thepeabody · 19/12/2019 14:18

@ItMustBeBedtimeSurely

My reasoning to waiting till Monday was between now and then stock would hopefully be replenished and the closer I leave it the fresher the meat?
Thanks for all replies everyone.
As it happens turn of events means I will now have to go tomorrow to get it back feel confident from replies here there will be a turkey with a useby date for 25th.

I've been able to pick up a discounted turkey from Lidl on Xmas Eve afternoon every year for the past 4 years.

Lunafortheloveogod · 19/12/2019 14:47

I bloody hope so or we’ll all be having chicken Grin. We don’t usually buy ours before the 20th.. more for storing the bloody thing rather than freshness. I think it’s only a problem if you’re looking for a very specific bird.. like a gigantic dressed n stuffed crown prewrapped in bacon vs a bird for an average family size.

HeyMac · 19/12/2019 14:48

Aldi's Christmas stuff was in stores this morning. Your Waitrose turkey will effectively be the same as an Aldi turkey but in different packaging with a steeper price tag. Use by dates on the Aldi stuff is a minimum of Boxing Day.

MrsJBaptiste · 19/12/2019 15:24

You'd be mad to wait until Monday though, what would be the point?

What? Surely your turkey is for Christmas Day (25th) so what's wrong with buying it on the 23rd?

CareOfPunts · 19/12/2019 15:26

I’ve never struggled to get one. Going to asda on Sunday for my turkey crown

WooMaWang · 19/12/2019 15:35

You could saunter in during the afternoon on Christmas Eve and still get one. Possibly half price. 😂
