If you haven't ordered/reserved a turkey is it too late to buy in store

Am thinking of getting a turkey crown on Monday morning.
Have a Waitrose , Asda , Lidl and Aldi near me.
DP is insistent we get it tomorrow but I would prefer to purchase Monday.
Any ideas or anyone has past experience of buying this close to Christmas?
Sorry for my naivety but it will be my first time of buying the bird for the dinner.

I have done this frequently OP, there will be turkeys in the shops!

LtJudyHopps · 19/12/2019 15:38

I went to Tesco at lunch they had their turkeys in, BBD 26th December.

stripeypillowcase · 19/12/2019 15:39

unless you are picky for organic/freerange you will be able to pick up a decent bird.

We buy ours just before closing time on Xmas Eve when they're reduced!

WooMaWang · 19/12/2019 15:46

Do you know, I have never ordered/reserved a turkey in my life. I've never struggled to buy anything for Christmas dinner either. It just isn't that big of a deal.

teenagetantrums · 19/12/2019 15:46

My DP works for lidl. Fresh ones coming in all weekend. Every year they reduce them on Christmas Eve as they closed for two days after. I wouldn't pay if you will be fine next week to get one

homemadecommunistrussia · 19/12/2019 15:53

I shall pop to Sainsbury's on Monday, it will be fine as it has been the previous twenty times.
I haven't got enough room in my fridge for a turkey and the weekend's food as well.

drivingtofrance · 19/12/2019 15:57

Well I haven't bought one yet either.

Plan to nip to Morrisons on Monday. Will aim for a fresh turkey but if there aren't any then a frozen one will have time to defrost before Wednesday .

drivingtofrance · 19/12/2019 15:58

I may send DH actually.

He seems to enjoy shopping when the store is packed out with slow moving groups of shoppers.

Time to write my list.. Xmas Grin

In Waitrose this morning there were loads, all with bbd of 26 December, same every year. I’ve spoken to the staff, the bbd won’t change whether you buy it today or Tuesday.

FixTheBone · 19/12/2019 16:19

We always get ours first thing on Christmas Eve from Morrisons, get up early and wait for opening....

AnyFucker · 19/12/2019 16:27

I have known places to run out of sprouts though. Gotta have sprouts.

Baaaahhhhh · 19/12/2019 16:29

We always shop in Waitrose on Xmas eve. Everything is available. We have been let down by deliveries so often, we started doing this a few years ago. Everything that was apparently unavailable delivered, is always in the shops, inc. fresh turkeys. Worry not.

Inglenooks · 19/12/2019 17:02

Worked in supermarket retail. 23rd is always the busiest shopping day for food - the shops know this and stock accordingly! There will be plenty of turkeys next week.

Ocomeocomeimaginaryfleas · 19/12/2019 17:19

Bought our bronze turkey crown today from Lidl. The sell by date is 26 December and unless things go very wrong I will have cooked it by then. I have every confidence it will not kill anyone. Mind you, I'm vegetarian so I won't be eating it...Grin

Crunchymum · 19/12/2019 17:27

I was planning to buy on Monday (afternoon as I have an appointment in the morning) but now I'm getting a bit antsy so I'm going to go when shops open on Sunday!! In fact, I may nip to M&S Saturday and see how they are dated Grin

Peppapeppapeppapeppa · 19/12/2019 17:32

We are hosting a late Christmas dinner on 28th for family reasons so I'm buying the entire Christmas dinner on 27th. Hopefully half price!

Even hosting on 25th we wouldn't buy until Christmas Eve and we've never had a problem.
