DD has had stomach pain for 12 days

She's 8.I took her to the doctors a week ago who said it was probably caused by the glands in her tummy being swollen trying to fight off an infection.
(she had had a sore throat a few days before) she's been having paracetamol and Ibuprofen nearly every 5 hours day and night but now paracetamol doesn't seem to work. only the Ibuprofen. She's now got ear ache and a temperature and the pain in her stomach is bad. I hate seeing her in so much pain. She's got another doctors appointment tonight but wanted to see if anyone else had experienced similar because I've never heard of this before. The pain is around her bellybutton.

has the gp actually examined her? felt her tummy?

you have given her ibuprofen for more than 5 days?
you really need to discuss this with the gp as ibu can cause kidney issues if overdosed.

CookingProblem · 18/12/2019 16:31

Yes she's been examined, urine test ect. Doctor said it's definitely not her apendix.

good to hear. all to often gp's seem to not do physical examinations.
gp might want to do a blood test now, maybe you can apply emla cream before you go already?

hope she recovers soon.

Sounds a lot like mesenteric adenitis. Can take several weeks for the pain to full resolve.

Guineapigbridge · 18/12/2019 16:35

I would be worried about that much ibuprofen. That’s a lot, over a long period.

Greenglassteacup · 18/12/2019 16:36

Yes re the ibuprofen, it can cause gut problems

Span1elsRock · 18/12/2019 16:37

I always get horrendous stomach pains when I'm ill, it's where your nodes/glands are right at the top of your stomach.

It can take weeks to go, but I'd see your GP again if you're worried.

CookingProblem · 18/12/2019 16:37

I haven't given her more than 3 doses in 24 hours. The doctor said to give it while the pain was still there. One of the reasons I'm taking her back to the doctors is because Im worried about the amount of painkillers she's having.

Well we've been to the doctors and he basically suggested that she might be making it up. I know she isn't. He asked me what I thought it was. He told me to carry on giving painkillers if she needed them. That was it.

I've read up on mesenteric Adenitis and that sounds exactly what she has.

Ibuprofen gave me terrible stomach pains. I also had very painful swollen glands in my entire body when I was 12 and had glandular fever.

Greenglassteacup · 18/12/2019 17:40

Hopefully you’re seeing a different GP this time

Greenglassteacup · 18/12/2019 17:41

Oh sorry, didn’t realise you’d already had the follow up appointment

RandomMess · 18/12/2019 17:47

I was going to say MA, hope she gets better soon.

CookingProblem · 18/12/2019 17:48

The first gp we saw was really good but this one was terrible. He kept talking about dds cold symptoms but I'd already told him she didn't have a cold. I'd also told him dd hadn't been eating but he said he wasn't concerned because she was eating well. I'd had to give her Ibuprofen about an hour before her appointment so she wasn't in too much pain and her temperature had gone done. He took her temperature and looked at me confused and said she didn't have a temperature and she didn't seem to be in pain. Well yes obviously because the Ibuprofen is working.

Greenglassteacup · 18/12/2019 17:54

Has she had a blood test?

StarlingsInSummer · 18/12/2019 17:56

This used to happen to me whenever I had a bad cold as a child. I’d usually vomit as well - it wasn’t a stomach bug, it was when my glands in my neck were up too.

strongswans · 18/12/2019 18:05

Another vote for mesenteric adenitis (sp). It can be nasty, my ds has been hospitalised with it before to get control of the pain.

CookingProblem · 18/12/2019 18:05

No she hasn't had a blood test. Oh god I can't cope if she gets this everytime she gets ill.

OP posts:
Greenglassteacup · 18/12/2019 18:12

Are her bowel movements normal?

CookingProblem · 18/12/2019 18:15

Your poor ds. The pain dds been in, I can see why you'd end up in hospital with him.

Yep bowel movements all normal. Had a urine test which was normal too. She's not been eating. She was sick on Saturday morning but definitely not a sickness bug.

Those of you who've had the same or have dc with the same, what do you do for pain relief and how long did it last?

OP posts:
Penny31 · 18/12/2019 20:20

My DD has had this for about 8 weeks now too! She stopped mentioning it for a couple of days but now it’s back again. We were told swollen glands, then possible constipation (although she has been quite regular in that dept). It did follow a nasty winter bug, so I was riding it out, but the longer it’s going on the more worried I’m getting.

Hope your DD gets well soon

FitzChivalry · 18/12/2019 20:25

My dd5 had this last winter but started with a bout of earache, it lasted for months until the ear was 'bad enough' for antibiotics. She was referred to the hospital and the doctor said she was probably just a glandy child. She gets mild tummy ache now when she gets a site throat or ears, but no where near as bad as before, only a couple of days.

I was similar as a child, then grew out of it.

I only used paracetamol suspension just incase the ibuprofen made it worse. Hot water bottles and tummy massage too.

CookingProblem · 18/12/2019 20:56

Oh penny your poor dd. What has the doctor said about it? Are you still having to give painkillers?

Fitz, glad your dd hasn't had it as bad since. Thinking back, my dd always complains of tummy ache when she's ill but never like this. I'd never really thought about it before. The doctor said her ears looked fine and it wasn't an ear infection so I'm not really sure why she has earache.
