DD has had stomach pain for 12 days

She's 8.I took her to the doctors a week ago who said it was probably caused by the glands in her tummy being swollen trying to fight off an infection.
(she had had a sore throat a few days before) she's been having paracetamol and Ibuprofen nearly every 5 hours day and night but now paracetamol doesn't seem to work. only the Ibuprofen. She's now got ear ache and a temperature and the pain in her stomach is bad. I hate seeing her in so much pain. She's got another doctors appointment tonight but wanted to see if anyone else had experienced similar because I've never heard of this before. The pain is around her bellybutton.

At the last visit we were given laxatives and told to give it another couple of weeks. My DD stopped mentioning it for a couple of days but she was complaining again today. She has got a cold now sit could be glands, she had the winter bug followed by a nasty cough and now had a cold again. I’ll give it another week and go back again if she still mentions it. I hate it when she’s poorly 😞

It's horrible isn't it. Your poor dd. I really hope she feels better soon.

I've had an awful night with dd. Been up since 1am as she's been in so much pain. Painkillers weren't working for her at all last night and she's just been crying all night. I just don't know what to do for her. And selfishly, I can't carry on like this either. I'm 7 months pregnant and have a physical job. I don't know how I'm goinf to get through today.

She shouldn’t be having ibuprofen on an empty stomach!!! It can cause stomach ache in itself!! I didn’t realise until recently that you should always have something to eat with it. The painkillers on an empty stomach could be making it worse.

I could have written this! The stomach pains started about 6 weeks ago, really quite bad, took her to GP...Def not appendix...week later took her back and she had urine and blood tests, all clear and put down to post viral swollen glands. Now she has developed a very sore throat and cough. I am reassured to hear that she isn't alone. I am hoping a couple of weeks off school will sort her out, I am missing my usually healthy happy (ish!) 10 year old.

CookingProblem · 19/12/2019 08:26

6 weeks! I don't think either of us can cope with this for another 4 weeks. I'm worried this will spoil Christmas for her. What are you doing for pain relief?

Giving ibuprofen on an empty stomach will cause pains. A lot of people can't really tolerate it regardless so I'd stop giving that for pain relief immediately. You may find it then starts to improve. I took it I've on a regular basis and the cramping and gnawing pains in my stomach were awful. So you could be perpetuating the vicious circle here

Hope she feels brighter soon

Breastfeedingworries · 19/12/2019 08:38

Don’t give pain killers on empty stomach can cause more pain and cramps.

Hope she feels better soon. Flowers

Hot water bottle?

I hope she’s feeling better and you got some sleep?

ifonly4 · 19/12/2019 10:35

If she has another bout of extreme tummy pains, I'd phone the doctor and ask for an emergency appointment. If you don't get anywhere and you're convinced she's in pain, try phoning 111 and if you don't get anywhere consider A&E. Is it just around the tummy button area or slightly to the side - I'm thinking more right hand side and appendix - when my DD had an infected apprendix the pain radiated down her leg and across her stomach.

CookingProblem · 19/12/2019 12:00

I will stop giving her Ibuprofen and see if that helps. Paracetamol doesn't seem to be helping with the pain anymore which isn't good. I've had to come in to work today so no sleep. Luckily just one more day at work tomorrow then I'm off for a week. Thanks for all the support, I really appreciate it.

My daughter had stomach ache for weeks turned out she was constipated, the doctor was useless, but once I realised she wasnt drinking enough water and made her drink more he stomach aches stopped and she hasn't been constipated since.

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 21/12/2019 20:21

Your poor DD! As PP said, let’s hope she’s better in time for Christmas Xmas Smile

KellyHall · 21/12/2019 21:46

I'm sure now she and you have been taken seriously and given medication, your dd will start to feel much better.
All the best to you both for a speedy recovery and lovely Christmas Xmas Smile

CookingProblem · 22/12/2019 07:45

Thanks everyone, I actually had a cry last night as I was just so relieved! Hopefully we will both get some sleep soon too! I'm always worried about wasting doctors time but this has proved that if you feel somethings wrong, or you aren't being listened to, always go back. I hope you all have a lovely Christmas!
