Are we likely to get a turkey for Christmas this late?

As title says. We were waiting to exchange / complete on our house and it didn’t look likely but now an actual Christmas miracle has occurred and we have the keys so it’s a go-go

Am I completely naive to think we might still get a turkey from somewhere? Anyone had luck this late on and any recommendations where to try?

Supermarkets have them every year right up until Christmas.

Herocomplex · 18/12/2019 15:26

I’m going to get one from the supermarket on Dec 23rd. I’ve never done it before, always ordered one, but I think it will be fine.
Congrats on your new house!

Chemenger · 18/12/2019 15:26

They are always on the shelves when I go to pick mine up from M&S a couple of days before Christmas.

I always buy mine on 23rd/24th in supermarket

BarbaraofSeville · 18/12/2019 15:31

Nothing to worry about. All the supermarkets will have fridges or freezers with more than enough turkeys right up until Christmas Eve, ditto butchers and farm shops (disclaimer - some items may run out later in the day on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and if you're very particular, you might not get your first choice but I would be 98% confident that you'll be able to get 'a turkey' from the first shop you enter if you go in the morning on any day before Christmas.

I've never ordered a turkey and usually just go to our local farm shop to get a turkey butterfly (one single giant turkey breast) a day or two before Christmas.

nutellalove · 18/12/2019 15:32

M&S frozen turkey. Felt it tasted better than the fresh one I bought and was cheaper.

FluffytheGoldfish · 18/12/2019 15:34

My mum and my DH will be going shopping for the turkey and the rest of the meat tomorrow or Friday. We always wait till about a week or less. I can't say where she will buy it as she and DH will decide what they want and then who cooks what. I just go to break any deadlocks.

TheReluctantCountess · 18/12/2019 15:35

Of course! We often leave it until Christmas Eve - sometimes they are reduced then.

reginafelangee · 18/12/2019 15:39

Of course you will. Every single supermarket will have them.

We never order and just buy supermarket turkeys. Usually on 22nd or 23rd.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 18/12/2019 15:39

Theyve got them in heron foods

Fairylea · 18/12/2019 15:40

We always buy a fresh crown for 4-5 of us from Tesco a couple of days before Christmas! Never had any issues.

fussychica · 18/12/2019 15:54

Fresh ones are often only coming into the shops today or tomorrow so you'll have a good choice. I think it's too late to order one from anywhere now though. I'm intending to get mine on Friday which is about standard for me. Just a small crown as having beef as the main event this year.

AdaColeman · 18/12/2019 16:11

Be wary of buying a frozen bird on Christmas Eve as you will struggle to have it defrosted in time, fresh is the way to go for a late turkey purchase.

ShirleyPhallus · 18/12/2019 16:14

Oh, this really is great news, I thought it would be all doom and gloom and I’d have to resort to plucking a goose from the local ponds instead

Thank you @Herocomplex! Wine

I've never ordered a turkey, I just buy it on 23rd or early on 24th Dec from a supermarket! M&S turkey crown is good with stuffing! I just get their early.

ChristmasCroissant · 18/12/2019 16:27

I frequently just buy a turkey from the supermarket and don't order one, we've never not had a turkey yet! Don't worry OP, and I hope the move goes well - enjoy Christmas in your new home Flowers

BeFire · 18/12/2019 16:32

Aldi and Lidl turkeys go on sale tomorrow.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 18/12/2019 16:33

Yes just go to a supermarket, they all have plenty!

Great news on the house 😃

Vanillaradio · 18/12/2019 16:33

Dh and I always used to get one from the supermarket on Christmas Eve! We do an M and S order these days but always loads of turkeys still when we go in to pick up!

moanyhole · 18/12/2019 16:35

Always get one in supermarket 23rd. Otherwise it will go out of date. Always loads there

Biscoffer · 18/12/2019 16:36
Xmas Biscuit
xlkhs · 18/12/2019 16:37

You go to the supermarket and pick one off the shelf. Or in the event that they have none left, you get a chicken and carry on with the rest of the dinner and nobody will know or care and you’ll have saved £££.

xlkhs · 18/12/2019 16:39

I always get one off the supermarket shelf on 21-24 Dec unless I don’t like the prices and I get a chicken instead.

AJPTaylor · 18/12/2019 16:44

Well I went and got our turkey crown from m and s today, off the shelf. In date until 27.12..

GooodMythicalMorning · 18/12/2019 16:45

We always leave it late to get the Turkey, never not got one. Tesco's will have them
