Unexpected bonus in new house - am beyond excited!

Have lived in a tall house on a small plot for years. Very little outside space, no parking or garage.

Just bought a doer-upper - it's built on a fairly steep hillside with lovely views. We viewed it in a bit of a hurry and had a quick look at the undercroft which wasn't really mentioned on the particulars. Saw a shed-sized room full of stuff and thought it would be useful for something.

Purchase is going through so I went back to the house yesterday to have a good look and to measure windows etc. Went back into the undercroft and realised it's a bloody warren of rooms! You can't stand up properly in some of them but they're all dry and clean and have power. The main room which I saw on first viewing is also way, way bigger than I remembered. Am almost embarrassed at how excited I am at the prospect of STORAGE. Also slightly tempted to put a trapdoor in the lounge and then the kids can disappear down there with their bloody felt pens and Barbie dolls

My sister found a room in her house when she had some builders in. It was a fully decorated and furnished child's room that had been sealed off.........the house was a few hundred years, I'd say the décor was from the mid 1800s..........I assumed there was a sad tale behind it. :( This was about 30 years ago and at the time they just cleared it out and used it for storage. Shock didn't even bother taking any pics but I think her husband stashed a few pictures from the wall. There were toys and allsorts in there.

I have the extra rooms dream often as well. I usually dream we’ve just moved house and found more rooms than we expected. One time, the new dream house backed onto a canal and we discovered a huge floating extension!

Equanimitas · 11/12/2019 00:23

Envious. I'd want to use that for rooms like a utility room, mini gym, study, playroom etc.

Happysummer2020 · 11/12/2019 00:46

That is amazing. Never heard of an under Croft but I want one !!

stupidtabloidheadlines · 11/12/2019 01:10

I'm imagining Silence of the Lambs style night-vision goggle japes aplenty, I'm afraid :)

I also dream about hidden rooms in my house! Often I'm in an old flat I lived in for many years and I discover a whole new floor underneath or next to it. It's not the same every time. Sometimes also a massive garden leading to fields. Sometimes it feels very normal, sometimes the new rooms are bizarre. Once I discovered a friendly older woman in a pink dressing gown living in my imaginary extra floor.

I had no idea this was so common! Nice to see the hidden rooms dream is a nice dream for most others too.

JockTamsonsBairns · 11/12/2019 02:08

How strange, I also have the hidden rooms dream. In fact, I've had it quite a few times, it's the same hidden rooms each time, beautifully decorated, and each time I open the door to them, it comes as a surprise.
Interestingly, I've had quite a lot of changes and upheaval in my life over the past few years, so pp interpretation of it rings true.

Seeingadistance · 11/12/2019 02:37

I have more than one dream house with hidden rooms. There are different from each other, but the details of each individual house and it’s hidden rooms remain constant, if that makes sense. I never dream about my own real life house though.

I love my hidden room dreams!

MinervaSaidThat · 11/12/2019 02:42

@FoamingAtTheUterus that's so sad. It sounds like walking into a time warp. I bet a historical society would have loved to seen that!

BasiliskStare · 11/12/2019 02:45

@DingDongScahdefreudeonHigh

Ha ha ha " I actually DREAM (literally) of finding an extra room/rooms in our house. It's ne of those dreams where you wake up and for a few moments think it is actually real. And then realise it's not . . . "

I have dreamt this too - I kid you not - ( we have a tiny house ) that I discover a secret room we did not know about. Ha ha ha ha - tragically when I wake up the house is exactly the same size and any extension never going to happen ( not allowed) But love the idea that someone else dreams about extra rooms

What a great discovery!
I have two recurring hidden house dreams. One is wonderful and I find four extra empty but nicely decorated living/bedrooms through the other side of the pantry door. The other one I have to crawl through a hatch and all the rooms are a bit scary and filled with antiques and old carousel horses - that version really freaks me out. I didn't realise it was a common dream though!

BasiliskStare · 11/12/2019 02:50

excuse spelling @ DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh but your post amused me

PhoneLock · 11/12/2019 02:50

Our house had a hidden cellar. DH found it by accident.

lookingforthis · 11/12/2019 04:06

I never understand how these hidden rooms aren't known about in advance. Aren't they in a floor plan or something? And even in the case of a room that was sealed off 200 years ago, if it's a two storey house then surely you'd wonder what was on the floor above you, or why the upstairs of the house seemed smaller than downstairs?

5LeafClover · 11/12/2019 04:19

Another hidden room dreamer... I used to have the dream all the time, and again it's often the same place but I've no idea where it is. It's always a really happy dream and im disappointed when I wake up. i was convinced it meant something significant so I confided in a friend who just laughed and said it meant I needed to tidy up a bit. I've never mentioned it since so it's interesting to find I'm not the only one.

Congratulations OP on having this happen irl.

Mummaofmytribe · 11/12/2019 04:36

@foamingattheuterus that's spooky. Like the red room in the Haunting of Hill HouseHmm

SpiderCharlotte · 11/12/2019 06:49

My friend found a room! They had a built in bookcase in their living room which they decided to remove because it was massive and took up loads of space. When her husband took it down he found a door! A proper door! There was no handle on it and it was locked so they took the hinges off and found a perfectly square little room. It had an old rug in it but nothing else (apart from spiders). So they cleaned it all up and made a wee snug in there. It's lovely and very pretty and totally gives me the creeps! I don't like the idea of why it would have been blocked up in the first place and my imagination runs riot when I think about it. Grin

BlueWonder · 11/12/2019 07:01

Yes, know people who found quite a big room on the attic floor after moving in. Not in the plans or estate agent particulars etc. Same property also had an extra garden beyond the hedge that they didn't know about. ...a double bonus! Have to say it was a fairly sizeable property to start with, I think you'd notice in the average semiSmile

Deathraystare · 11/12/2019 08:43

Isn't that great?! Storage is a big thing! Lucky you!

sycamore54321 · 11/12/2019 08:54

I love your excitement pulsing through your words and share your views on the joy of storage.

But...

... are you sure this won’t effect your mortgage approval, any survey already done, insurance. I’d be suspicious as to why it wasn’t mentioned. Mortgage approval is often given for “standard construction” etc so anything unusual would need specific consideration.

But hopefully I’m paranoid and it’s all a wonderful bonus.

Cosmos45 · 11/12/2019 09:01

I also dream of finding extra rooms in our house. What's that all about? It's always the same house/same rooms and I just suddenly discover them - one room in particular is massive for entertaining and includes an outside swimming pool and a bar for entertaining (go through french doors to get to it). Weird! How exciting for you OP.

LittleLongDog · 11/12/2019 10:05

Dreaming about finding a new room in your house is supposed to mean that you’re unlocking new potential in yourself (developing a new skill for example).

Hope that helps you feel better about it @5LeafClover !

DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 11/12/2019 10:29

To all of us who dream of extra rooms - I raise a toast to all of our potential just waiting to be released!

I bet we'll be AWESOME!!!!!

My "Hidden Room" dreams are always my own house , not a new one and the room has a tiny half door , everything is covered in greasy stinking dust and something shouts at me to get out !

What does that mean?

Very Envy of the Undercroft , YY to a fabulous laundry room and storage .

(Though you know you don't open it up till late October ?
"Hey , DH , why don't we know through this obviously hastily assembled brick wall, there must be something behind it . And all these weird symbols painted on it ................ Ahhh. There was a reason it was bricked up....... mwah ha ha "

weehoo · 30/04/2020 22:47

Hello - thought I would come back to update as it's been a few months!

We finally moved in just before lockdown and one of the first things I did was run to the cellar for a proper look 😂 Turns out the previous owners had left loads of things in it, many of which are going to be rather useful. The network of rooms actually mirror the layout of the entire house, with just over half the space being full height and the rest is stooping/crawling space.

I don't actually go in there much as everything's still in chaos due to moving just before lockdown. I haven't installed that trapdoor in the lounge yet but after long days at home with the DC, I'm sorely tempted some days...
