Unexpected bonus in new house - am beyond excited!

Have lived in a tall house on a small plot for years. Very little outside space, no parking or garage.

Just bought a doer-upper - it's built on a fairly steep hillside with lovely views. We viewed it in a bit of a hurry and had a quick look at the undercroft which wasn't really mentioned on the particulars. Saw a shed-sized room full of stuff and thought it would be useful for something.

Purchase is going through so I went back to the house yesterday to have a good look and to measure windows etc. Went back into the undercroft and realised it's a bloody warren of rooms! You can't stand up properly in some of them but they're all dry and clean and have power. The main room which I saw on first viewing is also way, way bigger than I remembered. Am almost embarrassed at how excited I am at the prospect of STORAGE. Also slightly tempted to put a trapdoor in the lounge and then the kids can disappear down there with their bloody felt pens and Barbie dolls

Another who regularly dreams of rooms that I’ve just discovered.
What’s an undercroft?

LookMoreCloselier · 10/12/2019 22:38

I have the dream too, I'm my case my extra rooms are accessed through an under stairs cupboard which doesn't actually exist in my real life house, through the corridor I've got an extra living room, dining room and a couple of bedrooms. Unfortunately they need some work done and I've visited the same rooms in different dreams. I think it means there are hidden parts of us or something like that.

Oct18mummy · 10/12/2019 22:39

I also have this dream of finding lots of new rooms full of antiques etc fabulous you have discovered this!

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 10/12/2019 22:41

I think it means there are hidden parts of us or something like that.

Well that’s no comfort! 😲😁

Medievalist · 10/12/2019 22:44

Oh goodness - I also dream from time to time of finding extra rooms in my house. I always thought it was a result of feeling we didn't have enough space. So exciting and yes, the feeling does stay for a short while after waking.

We're actually in the process of buying another house and I've recently dreamt about finding a beautiful summerhouse in the garden. Most disappointing when I woke up!

weehoo · 10/12/2019 22:46

I'm not sure if undercroft is a local expression, but it's like a cellar but above ground. Based on the ones that I've seen, they occur where you build a house on a steepish slope and access the house from the higher side at ground floor level but the other side of the house will have almost another floor. Have done a quick pic

The house I'm buying has an undercroft where the arrow is, and it extends the full width of the house and towards the back (upslope)

Quite a few of the houses we viewed had undercrofts of varying sizes. One place had a huge room which contained an entire model railway network - it was a bit sad as the owner had died.

Funnily enough, I've had recurring dreams about hidden rooms before. Clearly the urge for extra storage is strong, although in my dreams I usually convert them and rent them out on Airbnb 😂

I've had a dream of this too! In my version, the hidden rooms are accessed by crawling through a kitchen cupboard. Strange that so many of us have had a similar dream. Very excited for your real extra space OP.

SexlessBoulderBelly · 10/12/2019 22:52

We also bought a house that needed some tlc. But it was worth it for the sheer amount of storage we have. We have a detached garage, the kitchen is wall to wall, ceiling to floor cupboards with wrap around worktop, the one thing I was really keen on was lots of kitchen space and work top space as I love to cook. The kitchen is probably the biggest room I think the house. Main bedroom has wall to wall fitted wardrobes. Spare bedroom (nursery now) has airing cupboard and another double door built in/intergrated cupboard that is so big we have no idea what to even do with it, if it started from the floor and not thigh height it would class as a walk in wardrobe.

My family always comment on how jealous they are that we have so much storage, yet we only have a 2 bedroom semi detached house. We brought it for £140k with a garage, big front and back gardens, front garden has now been turned into a driveway instead.

We’ve been here a couple of years now, still adding things and improving as we go, but we’re almost done now. We’ll probably stick it back on the market as it needed tlc, which we’ve given it and we’ve out in a driveway for 4 vehicles so we think we’ve probably got some really good value added on. Would be interesting to find out just how much we can make on it, we were first time buyers and I was only 21 at the time so I’m hoping we’ve done the right thing and can climb the property ladder to something abit bigger eventually.

I'm laughing my head off that the hidden rooms resonate with so many of you! I hesitated in posting as thought people might think I was a bit odd.

There is plumbing down there too so might try and relocate the washing machine. A little gym would be nice too.

If all goes well with the move, I will come back next month and post pics!

In my last house I had a recurrent dream about finding a large hidden room. So excited yours is real.

Ohyesiam · 10/12/2019 22:54

Ooh op how exciting, I’d love that.

Ive has the dream too , the newly bc discovered but of house odd always so exciting. In symbolic terms the house represents the self in Dreams. So we must all be plumbing undiscovered Depths in ourselves Xmas Grin

I'm in the US and have a basement. For years we used it as a massive storage area and laundry. Now we have a proper laundry room, storage room, living area and bathroom. It is amazing to have somewhere to put stuff!

When we redid our house we got rid of a second staircase from the kitchen (my kids used to call it the secret staircase - I hated losing it but it was the only way to get a downstairs loo and proper wardrobe space in two bedrooms). There was a space left and I begged the builder to try to do a fake bookcase door into the hidden space - it is the dream of my life to have a secret room.

If you go on Houzz and search hidden/secret room you'll see loads of fab ideas.

Wahay, @weehoo!

Fellow fan of the outbuilding/cellarage/workshop/fUtility space reporting in with interest.

Had thought thread was to be a musing on finding some object of value & morality of returning it ... but SPACE oh yeah.

What a fantastic bonus from a quick viewing.
Sure someone will be along soon, seizing a chance to scold you for lack of due dilgence, but sometimes ... GOETHE!!

Unexpected bonus in new house - am beyond excited!
messolini9 · 10/12/2019 23:12

Also .. .so heartening to read how common the extra/hidden rooms dreams are, & the notion that the dream house represents the self (or the self we are aiming to be?).

This explains why I have them so frequently when big life changes are afoot, huh?

2018SoFarSoGreat · 10/12/2019 23:14

I love when I dream of the extra rooms in my house. Recurs quite often (2 or 3 times a year at least) and it gets more clear every time. Last time the rooms - yes, a whole house down there through 'that door' - furnished, dishes, DUST, - I kept thinking I just have to clean in up and it is ready! Maybe new sheets :)

You are lucky. A dream come true!

theflushedzebra · 10/12/2019 23:18

I also have the 'hidden room' dreams all the time! Always a disappointment to wake up from those...

Sounds fantastic, OP. Lucky you!

Although we moved to a house with a cellar (damp) 10 yrs ago with the dream we'd make a fab room out of it.... still haven't... kids & life took over. Still my dream though!

theflushedzebra · 10/12/2019 23:21

God, one time I dreamt I found a whole new annexe to our house - lots of rooms and a bathroom. And they were all done up like gothic hotel rooms - four poster beds, big wooden chests, heavy curtains etc- God that was a lovely dream.

NigellaAwesome · 10/12/2019 23:22

@moorfarm that's me with the apple watch!

I'd trade an apple watch for bags of cellar space any day.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 10/12/2019 23:27

I'm also in the US and have a 'finished basement' which means it becomes an integrated part of the house (double garage in front half), with office and family room, half bath, laundry and storage room (shelves aplenty) - it was the biggest thing that attracted me to this house, to be honest. Really well done, and family room has double doors that open onto the garden. We spent so much time down there.

Still I want to find secret rooms. I'm greedy that way!

theflushedzebra · 10/12/2019 23:29

I envy those in the US with massive basements. Like the one in the Tom Cruse War of the Worlds - fantastic.

BeverlyGoldbergsHairAndJumpers · 10/12/2019 23:33

Also my nighttime dream and real life dream!

BeverlyGoldbergsHairAndJumpers · 10/12/2019 23:34

@theflushedzebra or in the Home Alone movie

theflushedzebra · 10/12/2019 23:40

Oh yes, Beverly, Home Alone House is incredible Envy

theflushedzebra · 10/12/2019 23:45

Actually, didn't McCauley sleep in the attic too - attics can be amazing. Not mine!. V v old and covered in spider webs and dust. There's an actual crawl-though up there, from one half of the house to the other (our house used to be two houses) and we have 3 loft hatches. DH went up there recently and came down looking like something from a horror film Grin

littlepaddypaws · 10/12/2019 23:45

i'm scared of cellars, watched 'psycho' at a too young age and scared myself stupid, am near phobic now Grin
