BBC iPlayer no longer available on Samsung smart TV?

Wondering if anyone else was having this issue? We bought a new Samsung smart TV in 2015 and as of today, we can no longer watch iPlayer on it. The BBC have changed the iPlayer app so that it’s no longer available on Samsung TVs.

We don’t have an aerial at our property, so we only have a TV license so we can watch iPlayer. Does anyone know if the BBC are trying to fix this? If not I’ll cancel my TV license.

I still have it on my Samsung TV (though I did only buy the TV this year)

Fairylea · 09/12/2019 19:39

Could you get a chromecast and cast it over? That’s what we always do.

BettyJean · 09/12/2019 19:41

@fairylea

Thanks but you are speaking to a Luddite. What does that mean?

I deleted it on mine and then readded it. It works fine now. Give it a go.

Looks like you need to contact Samsung.

Or, get a fire stick and carry on watching on that.

Probably an issue with the version of java on the tv, similar issue with Amazon kindle software (older kindles not having java updated). If you have a now tv stick or Amazon fire stick you should be able to plug them into your sub port on the tv and get iPlayer.

PigAuntie · 09/12/2019 19:43

DH won’t have a samsung TV as they are awful at keeping their apps updated so your smart TV quite quickly becomes dumb!! Not much use to you now but if getting a new one stay away from Samsung!!

Nearlyadoctor · 09/12/2019 19:44

We bought our Samsung in 2015 - had to update the software as per a message today, all working fine.

Fairylea · 09/12/2019 19:45

I know it isn’t really answering the whole Samsung bit but basically you can buy a little gadget called a Google Chromecast from Argos or Amazon that you plug into the tv and if you have a smartphone that you can download the bbc iplayer app to (and other stuff you can cast like Netflix, Now Tv, all 4 etc etc) then you press the little cast button on your smartphone and it will send it over to your Tv via chromecast (you just change the channel over as if you’re watching a dvd and it’s there).

We only have Samsung TVs and they all uodate themselves and I payed works on all of them . I noticed an update earlier , maybe that's the problem .

BettyJean · 09/12/2019 19:47

Yes, I’ve just checked. Auto update is on.

I’ll try and delete the app and reinstall, see if that works.

A chrome cast or firestick plugs into the side of your TV to essentially turn it into a smart TV. You can then broadcast whatever you're watching on your phone onto the TV. We do actually have an older Samsung smart TV but we had so many issues with it disconnecting from the Internet, apps crashing etc, that we only use the chromecast now. It's really simple to use. Very annoying that the older Samsung tvs no longer support iplayer though!

BettyJean · 09/12/2019 19:50

I’ve got no objection to buying a fire stick but does that mean I’ve now got a dumb tv?

OP posts:
BettyJean · 09/12/2019 19:50

@Reallybadidea

I know, 4 years old isn’t an old tv in my opinion.

The BBC site says its Tbs from 2012 so yours should be OK as should mine but I can't get it to work either.

Nonnymum · 09/12/2019 20:42

Tvs from 2012 I meant to say

BettyJean · 09/12/2019 20:46

I’ve tried deleting the app and reinstalling it. Hasn’t worked. I’ll get DP to have a look when he gets home tomorrow.

Sorru I've just dem it's not just 2012 models it's newer ones as well

PeachesandPie · 09/12/2019 21:18

So pleased its not just my tv! But bloody annoying- ITV player is also no longer supported as the tv is too old.

BettyJean · 09/12/2019 21:37

@peaches

Yes it is annoying. I don’t expect a tv to be obsolete in 4 years.

If DP doesn’t get it working, we’ll just save £15 a month by not paying the tv license. We haven’t got an aerial so we only have a license for iPlayer. Kids prefer Now TV and Netflix anyway.

If your TV is on the list at www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help/questions/recent-changes-to-iplayer/samsung-closure-2019 then you're out of luck. Well, Samsung say they're working on it for some models but it'll be next year.

Mine's not on the list but iPlayer stopped working today. It's a 2014 and also said it had the latest software.

Resetting the Smart Hub worked, iPlayer's now up and running again.

Easy to do: Press Menu, Select 'Smart Features', select 'Reset Smart Hub'.

Takes a while, and there's a worrying moment when you think the whole TV has been reset to factory defaults, but it all comes together fine. You do have to go find the iPlayer app and it re-downloads, then you have to re-do the BBC login thing.

Hi I’ve spent around an hour trying to refresh the bbc iPlayer app on my Samsung without joy. Last time something like this happened I called John Lewis where I purchased the smart tv from - they were aware of the issue and advised to give it a few hours and to then then delete the app, disconnect my tv from the internet and then reconnect and reload the app. Will try this tomorrow and if I still get the same fault, will be calling Samsung support uk. Pretty annoying especially given its the BBC!

Noideawhatusername · 10/12/2019 05:21

How annoying!
