BBC iPlayer no longer available on Samsung smart TV?

Wondering if anyone else was having this issue? We bought a new Samsung smart TV in 2015 and as of today, we can no longer watch iPlayer on it. The BBC have changed the iPlayer app so that it’s no longer available on Samsung TVs.

We don’t have an aerial at our property, so we only have a TV license so we can watch iPlayer. Does anyone know if the BBC are trying to fix this? If not I’ll cancel my TV license.

So the short story is that after discovering the same problem myself yesterday, and going through the rigermarole to try to resolve it today - an update eventually appeared in the last 10 minutes, which i was able to access via Menu/Support, and now iPlayer is working again!
So check the process on your TVs again and hopefully it is there for you too. I bought mine in 2013 and it is in perfect working condition, but really the ONLY way i use it is via iPlayer! Very glad that this has been resolved. Appalling thing to have potentially done/allowed (Samsung) just before Christmas. The long story is below..

I was livid about this, and tried to get through to Samsung on the phone today. Waited for half an hour then got cut off!
I was about to email them when I looked here and on advice was about to try resetting the smart hub, but was stalled when my pin number wasn't accepted. I then phoned the store where I bought my TV in April 2013 to see if they could advise me on a pin they may have used to to set up. I then tried the whole process again - going back into Menu, to suddenly find that the software update option was suddenly available. And so through this, I was able to download the update as we were all previously advised, and now - IPlayer works again!
I will not waste any more time going into how strongly I felt about what had potentially happened here at the hands of Samsung, nevermind the timing of it...
Fingers crossed all will work fine from now on.

We have chromecast in our smart tv. We have it as a back up to iPlayer as our Panasonic app broke for a couple of months. It's also useful to 'cast' You Tube to the tv (easier than using the TV app) and we cast Google photos/videos to the main tv as well.

For £20 it's well worth it.

We have had this problem as well. We updated the Hub and this did not solve the problem. However, this morning another update was available and this has sorted it.

KnifeAngel · 11/12/2019 19:38

Ours has now stopped working. After contacting Samsung on twitter they said they are releasing updates in batches. The one for my TV hasn't been released yet. They should have known about this and come up with a solution.

@MiriKool

To be fair, the BBC could have left this until after Christmas.

I understand the annoyance that people have with Samsung as they are responsible for keeping their software updated but shouldn't a fair share of the blame lie with the BBC who have stopped supporting software that many people use?

Surely the BBC should have a duty to support licence payers who are running older versions of Iplayer? By all means don't give them whatever the latest whizzy tweaks they have but still allow them to watch as they have until now.

Indi70 · 11/12/2019 20:48

Completely agree with everyone who has mentioned Aunty Beeb shouldering a fair portion of the fault. Smart TVs cost a fair amount of money as it is and I shouldn’t be having to fork out for another plug in type widget to get iplayer. Samsung support have been totally useless that includes their on line support/chat and telephone helpline. A simple notification message through the Tv would have been the least one would expect from this ‘world’ company.

Tiggles · 11/12/2019 21:19

Mine has stopped so will try and follow some of the advice on here tomorrow

Will be gutted if I don't have iplayer for Christmas as we don't have a normal aerial. Totally BBC fault for upgrading now.Angry

Perrinelli81 · 11/12/2019 21:24

Grrr we’ve had this too.
So annoying.
Our newer Samsung tv is fine but not the older one.
Will check again for another update but I am not impressed!
I never get to watch stuff when it’s actually on so rely on iPlayer a lot.

Logjam · 11/12/2019 21:42

I was as annoyed with the BBC as I was with Samsung - we pay for both - this should not have happened

ememem84 · 12/12/2019 10:29

Ours has done this too. Placemarking to remember to download updates.

CoodleMoodle · 12/12/2019 10:49

Ours still isn't working, despite constantly checking for updates. We mainly use it for Cbeebies, I feel like I've lost an arm! Will definitely show DH this thread and see if we can try the solution mentioned above.

I had ongoing issues with the 5 app on my Samsung tv, when it stopped working completely for a few weeks I reset the tv to factory settings and reinstalled the apps. It was a pain having to enter in passwords again etc but the 5 app that then came was completely different so it clearly hadn’t been updating properly. I need to check the BBC app tonight but could be worth a try?

Excited101 · 12/12/2019 20:57

My Samsung tv is 3-4 years old and works fine with the BBC app

Chasingsquirrels · 12/12/2019 21:01

I saw this earlier in the week and bookmarked it, then tried iPlayer on my tv on Tue and it wouldn't work. Tried the update via settings and it said it was up to date. Did the download onto a usb last night as detailed on here, but the download was the same firmware version as was already installed so that didn't go anywhere. Emailed Samsung support (haven't had a reply). Tried it this evening and it is now working - haven't yet checked if the firmware has updated.

KnifeAngel · 12/12/2019 21:04

I have had a tweet reply off Samsung and I have managed to fix mine.

Turn off at the mains for 30 seconds.
Switch on the TV for 5 minutes but don't use smart hub.
Turn off at the mains for 30 seconds.
Switch back on and it should work.

megletthesecond · 12/12/2019 21:18

The dc's 2016 Samsung galaxy tablets will lose BBC iplayer in the new year.
Apparently I have to download new flash player. It's never that simple though is it. I hate tech.

Nonnymum · 13/12/2019 13:23

I've got mine to work at last by following these instructions. www.samsung.com/uk/support/tv-audio-video/how-to-access-the-bbc-iplayer-on-a-2014-h-range-series-television/

Indi70 · 14/12/2019 17:36

Nonnymum - you’re a life saver. The link shared for resetting my Samsung actually works. Hurrah world order at home restored - at least until the next time. Marry Xmas all 🙂

Indi70 · 14/12/2019 17:37

Merry Xmas not marry xmas!
