Les Miserables

Did anyone watch the staged concert tonight screened at cinemas? Or indeed was anyone lucky enough to watch it in the flesh?

This was my first encounter of Les Mis I had no idea what it was about had only ever heard Susan Boyle sing 'I dreamed a dream' on BGT but OMG it was amazing!

Such an epic cast tonight too with Michael Ball, Alfie Boe, Matt Lucas. I loved Katy Secombe and Matt together. Hard to imagine anyone else in their place.

My local cinema was sold out with two main screens showing it. Never seen a cinema so busy. I only found out it was showing today and there were only a few single seats left so I did a first and went on my own. Luckily I was sat next to a lady and her (reluctant) husband so I had someone to chat to during the interval.

Seeing this actually live is now going on my bucket list.

Have seen les mis on stage 14 times. Saw the concert in august.

Bit apprehensive to see it when it comes back due to them changing key things in the show! No doubt I'll end up going anyway!

Doilooklikeatourist · 03/12/2019 09:22

@SubisYodrethwhenLarping , yes , we clapped

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 03/12/2019 09:28

I've seen it on stage quite a few times, maybe 4? Its been amazing each time, going again in Glasgow next year so I'm very excited about that! Thinking of looking up tickets to the cinema to see if I can get a showing this weekend too!

I have loved Les Mis since the first time I saw it on stage, I think 1986! I have seen it many times since and although it has been scaled down quite drastically (it used to have an enormous cast) it still gets me every time.

I hated the film!

JorisBonson · 03/12/2019 09:30

I've seen it 14 times so far... Confused

Youtube a guy called Colm Wilkinson who was the best Jean Valjean ever.

onemouseplace · 03/12/2019 09:38

I've seen it three times - once in 1994 on a school trip, once earlier this year and then the staged concert last week. I got most emotionally (over) invested when I saw it the first time (but I was 16 at the time) but I think the staged concert was the best I've seen and didn't lose anything by not being fully staged.

MrsWombat · 03/12/2019 09:39

I fell in love with the 10th Anniversary Concert which was shown on TV as a teen, and have loved it ever since. I've seen it live in the West End too which is amazing.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/12/2019 09:40

We went to it last night, a local theatre does 'stage to screen' screenings so you get a bit of theatre atmosphere (it's great for RSC productions). Some people seem to be a bit obsessed with this show, it was ok but I wouldn't have said brilliant.

bruffin · 03/12/2019 09:44

I've seen it twice and went to the staged concert for my birthday this year and had a brilliant time
I would have gone to cinema last night but I had a work do but ds and his gf went. Would have loved to see the speeches at the end.

Logjam · 03/12/2019 09:44

Started watching the BBC version - too much misery to be called entertainment...then again crying is not something I like to do for fun night out.

53rdWay · 03/12/2019 09:46

You at the barricade, listen to this!
No-one is coming to help you to fight
You're on your own, you have no friends,
Give up your guns or die!

adaline · 03/12/2019 09:48

We saw it yesterday - it was incredible!

W00t · 03/12/2019 09:55

I saw the stage production 20 years ago, and was very sceptical before going as it's really not my sort of thing (I only go to ballets, classical concerts, and metal gigs!).
I was absolutely blown away by how good it was.
Could I just say The Barricades?
My jaw dropped at that bit, and I still think of it 20 years later as one of the most ingenious things I've witnessed.

My DD was in a production of it last year, done by her school, and ok, the barricades weren't as they were in the official stage show...but it was amazing, such a high standard, and I loved it all over again.

Haven't seen the film, because I cannot watch anything with Russell Crowe in it.

WonkyDonk87 · 03/12/2019 09:56

He's not that bad in it.. Grin

W00t · 03/12/2019 09:57

And I've seen the 10th anniversary concert on dvd, which we watched to help DD prepare as she'd never seen/heard it.

W00t · 03/12/2019 09:58

Oh wonky I cannot abide him. I just cannot see him on screen, sorry! Blush

Horsemad · 03/12/2019 10:03

Never seen it but DH raves about it, so I should book for the stage show.

WonkyDonk87 · 03/12/2019 10:06

I can't completely disagree... I just always want to defend him when there are far worse castings over the years Grin

Comefromaway · 03/12/2019 10:06

Doubtful I will get to London anytime soon to see it so will put the film version on my Christmas list

Please don't - you will regret it. Get the 10th or 25th Anniversary DVD instead.

GreenLeafTurnip · 03/12/2019 10:07

Saw it over 10 years ago live in London with an ex-boyfriend who loved it. It was amazing and to this day I would love to go again. Unfortunately, I no longer live in the UK and my husband is not a theatre fan! But maybe one day I'll get to go again.

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/12/2019 10:09

I'm seeing it in Glasgow in June, can't wait

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/12/2019 10:09

I'm seeing it in Bristol next Easter, I can't wait!! I love the story and of course it's sad and tragic in places but the overall story is one of love and survival.

He’s not a terrible actor, but his voice just wasn’t up to the part. At the end of Stars, say, where Javert’s voice should just soar, it was such a let-down.

Interested to hear about the changes, @Pinkflipflop85 - I’ve seen the show about a dozen times, but not for a few years now - do you know any details?

TheFlis12345 · 03/12/2019 10:18

I have seen it at the theatre 3 times and am booking again for when it reopens in London, can’t wait!
