Two mattresses on a king sized frame!

I'm wondering whether anyone has tried this as a solution to a fidgety bed fellow?

I've got a nice (although squeaky) king sized bed frame and have been thinking about getting 2 small single beds and making them up individually with single duvets (there's also a duvet stealing issue plus the fact that I like a top sheet as well as a duvet, weirdo that I am).

Is it worth all the effort? I can't afford a new super king bed so this seemed like a next best option, with some good bargains around at the moment.

Then there's the snoring...😩

@umberellaonesie ooh thank you, that's so helpful! Those look like single duvets, is that right?

@AtiaoftheJulii that's useful to know thanks 😂
I suppose there are options to play around with the arrangement once I have the mattresses!

Thanks for these ideas and feedback everyone, much appreciated!

This is how the Scandanavians do it, and they seem like a happy bunch of well rested peopleGrin

Yes
My side - single fitted sheet, double flannel top sheet tucked in tight, with single wool duvet.
His side - single fitted sheet, anti allergy single duvet.
He is much bigger than me and even in our king size bed I would feel every movement from him and at times felt like I was going to get catapulted out of the bed.
So now I don t know he is there, he works funny shifts but can get up and into bed at odd hours and I don't notice.
We visit each others side as we fancy but I love that I have my own space to sleep in.
Never had an issue with a gap as my sheet keeps me on my side and him out. Grin

Ours is like @umberellaonesie but it is Ikea singles that attach together with single duvets.

We do have a memory foam superking topper that DH hates so he has some ultra thick cotton thing on top of his side so tbh we should have just got me a topper and had single sheets as his side is 3-4 Cm higher than mine so a definite his and her side that he does not dare breach.

Single duvets overlap in the middle. Works fine for us. No more cold draught down my back, no duvet being whipped off or turned 180 degrees Hmm

umberellaonesie · 02/12/2019 20:03

Interestingly hubby lived in Sweden for a whole and didn't bat an eyelid when i suggested it. I would say we are much warmer too with our own duvet, no draughts.

How it looks under the sheets

Two mattresses on a king sized frame!
umberellaonesie · 02/12/2019 20:04

When I liked into it getting zip link mattresses was cheaper than buying individual singles.

AnotherEmma · 02/12/2019 20:11

If you have a king size bed frame you will struggle to find two small mattresses to fit.

It would work with a super king size bed frame and two standard single mattresses.

But a king size frame is 150cm wide and I don't think you can get mattresses that are 75cm wide, not unless they are especially designed as 2 separate mattresses for a king size bed. Does such a thing exist?!

Two duvets is genius though, I've been seriously considering it for DH and me. A double duvet each (singles would be too small, I like to roll myself up in mine Grin)

AnotherEmma · 02/12/2019 20:16

Oh so a quick google tells me there is such a thing as a small single which is 2'6 = 76cm... I guess if the bed frame is roomy you might just squeeze 2 in?!

umberellaonesie · 02/12/2019 20:17

I think You can get zip link mattresses for king size frames

AnotherEmma · 02/12/2019 20:18

Ooh you can get king size zip and link Grin

Two duvets is the norm in some European countries. I don’t see the need for separate mattresses though.

AnotherEmma · 02/12/2019 20:18

Cross post

RandomMess · 02/12/2019 20:24

We have separate mattresses because we need different ones - he weighs nearly double me and he does not turn over gentle, no it involves bouncing and thrashing. I no longer get woken every time he "turns" over.

We are now mostly in separate rooms due to his horrific snoring, it is divine 😂

umberellaonesie · 02/12/2019 20:27

Same for us @RandomMess

franke · 02/12/2019 20:30

We have a bed frame which fits 2 x metre wide mattresses. The mattresses are the same in terms if hardness, but obviously could be different if we felt strongly about it. Where we live in Europe there's a duvet size between single and double. We have two of them. Works well for us.

AnotherEmma · 02/12/2019 20:34

franke I can only dream of a bedroom big enough to fit such a huge bed!

A duvet size between single and double is such a good idea, wish we had them here.

RandomMess · 02/12/2019 20:38

I tell you separate rooms is wonderful especially as I got the master room and he slopes off to a single bed elsewhere 😂

Moooooooooooooooooo · 02/12/2019 20:40

@Velveteenfruitbowl We have two zip linked mattresses on our super kingsized bed because I like a softer mattress than my husband, who likes quite a firm one. They work beautifully!

AnotherEmma · 02/12/2019 20:40

(Also dream of separate rooms.. alas not enough bedrooms!)

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 02/12/2019 20:42

IKEA single duvets are wider than a regular single. They only go with IKEA bedding though.

RandomMess · 02/12/2019 20:49

Is it bad that sometimes I think 2 houses next door to each other could be more perfect, my own bathroom he can't use Blush

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 02/12/2019 20:49

Ooh @umberellaonesie you're making it sound very easy! Pretty much exactly what I want.

@RandomMess thanks for the photo! I like the thought of a divide that must not be breached (well only when I say so).

@AnotherEmma thanks for that link! I had found another one earlier but none of them looked very nice. Those look nice but I can't afford them 😂

@Velveteenfruitbowl because he's a twitcher and a fidgeter at night and I don't want to feel it! Also want to have a top sheet on my side

Elodie2019 · 02/12/2019 20:52

It all depends on the budget!

2 x ikea single beds (base & mattress) pushed together may cost the same as 2 mattresses alone from elsewhere !

We have a 6ft zip and link. 2 single duvets. It's great.

Single duvets, separate mattresses are brilliant!

AnotherEmma · 02/12/2019 20:52

"Is it bad that sometimes I think 2 houses next door to each other could be more perfect, my own bathroom he can't use"

OMG. No. I fantasise about this ALL. THE. TIME. My own house where he is not allowed to leave stuff everywhere or use things and put them back somewhere else Grin
