TV that wouldn't air if it was made today

A memory from secondary school popped up in my brain today - me and my friends quoting a L'Oreal shampoo advert to each other in a biology lesson, "Here comes the science bit ... concentrate!"

Yes, us ickle wimmin would have to concentrate to understand science as it's too darn complicated for our ickle wimnin brains HmmGrin

It has got me thinking, what other TV ads, scenes or shows would never make it to air today?

There's quite a number of homophobic and transphobic jokes in Friends. They treated the lesbian couple pretty fairly but Chandler was always being called gay. Interestingly Chandler's Dad is a transwoman who dates men and is referred to as gay where as some people would insist that this made him a lesbian.

Also in Friends- a woman playing a transwoman.

Anytime a man slapped a hysterical woman and she thanks him for doing it.

MegaClutterSlut · 27/11/2019 09:58

Some episodes of tom and jerry

MagentaRocks · 27/11/2019 09:58

Don’t men use shampoo then? I don’t see how the shampoo advert is just for women.

Agree Alf garnett would not be made today although I remember seeing him interviewed somewhere and he said that he would get people saying to him things agreeing with what he said on the show and he said joke was on them as it was a piss take about the racist twats, still don’t think it would or should be made today.

“Flora - The Margerine for Men”
“Yorkie - Not for girls”

BigFatLiar · 27/11/2019 10:05

Lots of popular soaps (Eastenders, Coronation Street etc)
Most of the TV up until recent as attitudes change so quickly now with SM driving them. It won't be long before a lot of current TV will be outdated as attitudes continue to change.

Tighnabruaich · 27/11/2019 10:08

I always found this Yorkie ad funny and cute. Not sure how it would go down today.

amusedbush · 27/11/2019 10:08

Chandler's Dad is a transwoman who dates men and is referred to as gay where as some people would insist that this made him a lesbian.

Why would a transwoman who dates men be a lesbian? Confused

spacepyramid · 27/11/2019 10:09

Kenny Everett
and probably Spitting Image (sadly)

Limpshade · 27/11/2019 11:45

Oh I loved Spitting Image!

Thinking about it, if we opened it up to songs, Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me" would raise a few (more) eyebrows. Gaslighting at its finest.

I did wonder when Friends was going to show up on the list Grin Even at the time, the storyline with Phoebe's brother and his former-teacher-now-wife was a bit Confused

Also, yes of course men use shampoo but these ads were absolutely geared with women. A cursory look on YouTube reveals Jennifer Aniston saying it, sporting The Rachel Grin

The Mini-Pops

That little girl singing the Sheena Easton song Shock

Miss World and similar

hsegfiugseskufh · 27/11/2019 11:49

only fools, life on mars, ashes to ashes, allo allo

pretty much everything classed as comedy that's more than say 5 years old, and probably even stuff after that

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 27/11/2019 11:52

The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club. The format of the show wasn't the problem, really, it was the appallingly racist, homophobic and misogynistic host.

I wondered if anyone else would mention the Mini-Pops!

Little Britain

supercee · 27/11/2019 11:56

I know it wasn't that long ago but in Sex and the City (I've not long watched the whole thing again) there's an episode where Carrie's narrative ends on 'if even the world's fattest twins can find love...'.

That bit really annoys me! Can get people not find or are deserving of love?! There were other bits in it too which raised an eyebrow.

supercee · 27/11/2019 11:57

*fat people

teabagleftin · 27/11/2019 12:01

Come fly with me
(Not sure how it aired at the time)
If you’ll pardon the pun....
