TV that wouldn't air if it was made today

A memory from secondary school popped up in my brain today - me and my friends quoting a L'Oreal shampoo advert to each other in a biology lesson, "Here comes the science bit ... concentrate!"

Yes, us ickle wimmin would have to concentrate to understand science as it's too darn complicated for our ickle wimnin brains HmmGrin

It has got me thinking, what other TV ads, scenes or shows would never make it to air today?

God, I loved minipops when it aired. Now, it's terrifying to think that the programme was made and aired at all.
I was thinking about this very topic the other day. Of course I can't remember anything now. I'll come back after a cup of tea.

Definitely little Britain!

Come fly with me. (Not sure how it aired at the time) If you’ll pardon the pun....

I know. Precious was Matt Lucas in black face where the whole joke was how lazy this black woman is. It wasn’t that long ago!

even series ongoing had certain jokes they wouldn’t do now. Im sure in gavin and stacey Dawn tells at someone “look at yourself you pre-op”. Not sure how that would go down now!

The minipops Sheena Easton song Shock

Marvel at the true horror of it

We all like to think we're more enlightened and right-on than people were 20+ years ago, but up until very recently, the Jeremy Kyle Show was still airing, as were numerous makeover programmes were women were given plastic surgery to make them look more acceptable to the general public. There is currently a prime-time show where z-list celebrities have to eat live insects to win public votes, another where two people get married without even getting to meet each other first, and a dating show where people reject potential partners on the basis of what their naked bodies look like. I don't think any of that is less morally dodgy than comedy shows with homophobic or racist language, but it does seem that we're more inclined to judge people on what they say as opposed to what they do these days!

Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2019 14:18

On one Sky channel at the moment they are showing Man about the House and Robin's Nest complete with a warning beforehand along the lines of it being 'of it's time'.

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 27/11/2019 14:34

Michael Barrymore. I used to find him hilarious when I was a kid but actually if you catch one of his shows now his jokes are actually very racist and sexist.

honeybeetheoneandonly · 27/11/2019 14:51

"Two pints of lager and a packet of crisps". I watched the first two episodes on BBC iPlayer not long ago and it's awful.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 27/11/2019 14:52

This gameshow aired in Canada in the 1980s - how the host wasn't arrested I do not know:

Was just watching some Fr Ted clips with my mum. Not sure that could be made now.

ooooohbetty · 27/11/2019 15:21

@honeybeetheoneandonly in fairness 2 pints of lager was absolutely terrible at the time never mind now.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/11/2019 15:34

Apologies if already mentioned...I don't think they would make the film Rita Sue and Bob Too in this day and age! Embarrassingly I admit I thought it was hilarious at the time Hmm

mrswhiplington · 27/11/2019 16:07

Bernard Manning

There was a TV show in the 70s called The Comedians. Manning was on that and lots of others probably very similar. Can't believe I used to watch it as a child.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 27/11/2019 16:11

Rockbird which ones? Father Ted gets repeated pretty regularly and I think the impact it had at the time, when taking the piss out of the Catholic church was very much less common, has lessened significantly. It shows up on a lot of "greatest sitcom ever" lists and the only episode where there was racism was the one where Ted inadvertently becomes anti-Chinese-people Grin

AgeLikeWine · 27/11/2019 16:17

Brass eye.

There is zero chance that C4, or anyone else, would have the balls to broadcast the drugs & paedophilia episodes today.

The professionally offended brigade would slaughter them, and social media would explode with outrage from idiots who hadn’t watched the show, and wouldn’t understand the satire if they did.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 27/11/2019 16:28

Ah yes, I remember "Paedogeddon"!
Most people didn't get it at the time; they certainly wouldn't now.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 27/11/2019 16:29

Any of the Tango adverts where people get slapped in the chops. Although I think they did get complaints and stopped them.

SimonJT · 27/11/2019 16:38

To name a few

Goodness gracious me
Love thy neighbour
Noddy (they though replacing gollywogs with monkeys wasn’t racist...)
Friends
Little Britain
Come fly with me
The league of gentlemen
Gimme gimme gimme

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 27/11/2019 16:44

Love as I do, Fawlty Towers.

edgewater · 27/11/2019 16:52

Come fly with me - why?

DeegeeDee · 27/11/2019 17:20

That was really hard to watch @SirSidneyRuffDiamond

Ginger1982 · 27/11/2019 17:46

I can't believe that the L'Oreal advert is old enough to be considered as something that wouldn't air 'these days!'
