E.R. - best episode?

With ER now being all up on Demand4, I’m rewatching it and it’s sooooo good! The episode everyone always talks about is the one where Doug Ross saves the trapped boy in the storm drain, but I have a real soft spot for the episode where Carter takes over and moves the ER to the cafeteria when there’s a chemical spill. Oh, and the Christmas one where Bob the desk clerk performs open heart surgery.

Any other fans?

So, so many brilliant episodes. I liked so many but one of my favourites was the NICU one when Abby was there as a med student. So well done with the claustrophobic feel of the unit.

That’s what made it brilliant as you’ve all said .. it wasn’t just the main scenes and characters that were good, it was everything.

I do agree about Scrubs being better for actual medicine.

I couldn’t get into New Amsterdam. Maybe I need to try again.

I have the dvd so watch all the time, know the episodes inside out.
One of my faves has to be when doug rescues that kid from the storm drain, you can say what you like about doug but he’s passionate about his patients. Marks death is one to get me, even though we knew it was brewing it was so well written. Another good episode is when Romano gets crushed by the helicopter, the guy was an asshole so it made it bittersweet. There literally so many that have so many different meanings.

They changed the theme tune too which irritated....

That's when I finally gave up.

It had gone downhill for several seasons and I moaned a lot but still watched it. The day they showed the first ep with the new theme, I just thought f* this and switched it off.

I did watch the last couple of episodes because I wanted to see the old cast make their guest appearances. I doubt if I'd watch past season 6 now.

I laughed when the helicopter got Romano. It was a step too far.

also an appearance by Anton Yelchin as a child, very sad storyline there.

I remember that! And had no idea it was him when he got older but now it's so obvious. His looks never changed

ActualHornist · 15/11/2019 13:17

I watched some of the newer ones when Carter came back with his new wife. I believe the storyline with their son was when I was heavily pregnant and I just could not cope with it!

icebearforpresident · 15/11/2019 18:05

Nothing has ever made me cry like Mark dying, I bawl like a baby every single time.

I forget who said it but I’m with the person who said er & the west wing are their desert island box sets.

I’m rewatching it now (watched loves labour lost last night 😭) and as an adult I can’t believe my mum let me watch it as a kid. I was 9 years old when series 1 started!

3rdNamechange · 15/11/2019 18:05

I loved ER , I knew from the first time he was on that George was going to be a huge star.
Helicopter and arm off the top of my head bit will have to watch all again to make sure.

OhioOhioOhio · 15/11/2019 18:53

Omg. Maybe I missed some. When did Carter come back with his new wife?

FaithInfinity · 15/11/2019 19:58

Ohio I think it’s when he comes back from The Congo?

breakfastpizza · 15/11/2019 20:34

@RaininSummer - Hang in there. I only started it last year and it took me until Ep 6 or 7 to fully get into it.

AppropriateAdult · 15/11/2019 20:48

The episode where Lucy Knight and Carter get stabbed is my pick. The tension is unreal leading up to Carter finally finding Lucy injured on the floor.

This. I think I was a teenager when it first aired - I remember watching it over and over, it was just so brilliantly done. Each moment of discovery was incredibly tense and well-acted.
(Also the episode later in that season or the next when Paul Sobricki comes back to the ER for something and Carter sees him.)

I’m watching that episode now and finding it so upsetting - it’s not just watching Lucy die it’s also the nostalgia of remembering watching it as a teenager with my mum & dad. I miss those days Sad

QuestionableMouse · 15/11/2019 21:26

The one where they have the film crew in and Carter collapses and the ginger doc is treating him and his girlfriend who has been shot.

linentowel · 16/11/2019 15:53

I’ve just spent the last hour watching clips on you tube with a gin. I am a mess.

Greens letter with Elizabeths’s after. Dr Greene died at 06.04 am.

dmell13 · 16/11/2019 16:09

Massive fan of ER, watched them all many times and I'm currently up to season 9 again.
My favourite episode has to be Dr Greene dying 😩 makes my cry every time.
I hated when Carter left Abby and ended up with Thandi Newton, still can't bare her now! 😡

ER is my fave series ever! Watched it as a teen and again a couple of years ago as a 40 something mum and you do see it differently.

The episode where Mark dies is heartbreaking - proper sobs every time.

Love when Mark is in the lift with that patient and just activates the paddles whilst glaring at him but not saving him - very shocking for his character to do that.

And Lucy and Carter - in those days there weren't spoilers so came as a complete shock - a real WTF moment!

Loved the episode with Cynthia Nixon of S&TC as a stroke patient - loads of stars crop up in it! It really was groundbreaking TV.

TheHootiestOwl · 16/11/2019 21:33

Lucy and Carter
The helicopter
Pratt dying

I loved ER so much, was gutted when it finished.

Silvercatowner · 16/11/2019 21:36

Least best - season 1 - the one where Carter takes his daughter to work. She is SO irritating.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 16/11/2019 23:54

in those days there weren't spoilers

Oh there were, just not as many. I read the whole outline to the 2 Lucy and Carter episodes about a month before I saw them.

QuestionableMouse · 17/11/2019 00:05

Watching it now, thanks for making this thread.

BingoLittlesUncle · 17/11/2019 00:06

The one where there's a heavy snowstorm, no patients, they're all mucking around and then there's a major road crash with dozens of dead and injured. Cannot for the life of me remember which series it was or the title of the episode (if anyone knows, please post it).

QuestionableMouse · 17/11/2019 01:55

m.imdb.com/title/tt0567936/ there you go @BingoLittlesUncle

pollywobble · 17/11/2019 05:02

I loved Carol and the episodes around her overdose really moved me
Storm drain and the Carter and Lucy stabbing were the tensest
Romano's arm and the helicopter was a bit daft
I didn't know it was on atm,, I think I'm about to disappear down a wormhole...
