E.R. - best episode?

With ER now being all up on Demand4, I’m rewatching it and it’s sooooo good! The episode everyone always talks about is the one where Doug Ross saves the trapped boy in the storm drain, but I have a real soft spot for the episode where Carter takes over and moves the ER to the cafeteria when there’s a chemical spill. Oh, and the Christmas one where Bob the desk clerk performs open heart surgery.

Any other fans?

Yep, the helicopter....shocking.

Graphista · 14/11/2019 19:11

@RatinaMaze I cried just reading that!

@JanMeyer that's a great scene to point out. Romano was a fascinating character

David Krumholtz played the patient that stabbed Lucy and carter. I don't think he was particularly well known at the time, showing my age but shocked to see those episodes weren't until 2000's which is of course like 5 years ago Grin can't possibly be nearly 20! Shock

Yes making carter the one with an addiction problem was interesting, as someone with a lot of addiction in the family I liked they showed that could happen to even people who "have everything" that it's not just about poverty and deprivation as we still see all too often in MSM both fiction and non fiction

Op I think that's true for a lot of us that certain scenes in film & tv become MUCH harder to watch once we are parents ourselves.

TankGirl97 · 14/11/2019 19:21

I dunno about favourite episode, but the scene which stuck with me most was when Elizabeth was prepping for surgery and lost her ring down the plug hole. Romano managed to retrieve it. I loved to hate him but I did like it when he was nice.

OP - I also love the chemical spill ep! S4, Ep15, Exodus, if anyone is looking for it.

Abby's mum having a very public breakdown in the ER is a close second. S7, Ep8, The Dance We Do.

ILoveYou3000 · 14/11/2019 19:38

So many already mentioned, but one I love and I don't know why is from season 2, called 'A Shift in the Night'.

Sammysquiz · 14/11/2019 19:50

I’ve only seen my Dad cry twice in my life. Once was when Kate died in Heartbeat and the other was in the Loves Labours Lost episode of ER!

RatinaMaze · 14/11/2019 20:28

@breakfastpizza I've just watched The Dance We Do. Sally Field was incredible in that role and the whole thing was so powerful. Between those scenes and Mark finally telling Elizabeth about his brain tumour, I'm sitting here ugly crying.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 14/11/2019 20:33

Storm Drain
Gant
Love's Labors Lost
When Susan left
Mark's death
Lucy and Carter being stabbed (even though I'd read spoilers it still shocked me to the core)

tigger1001 · 14/11/2019 20:51

Loved er. As much as I enjoy other medical drama's none seem to come close to er.

I've too many favourite episodes to mention, but am looking forward to watching it all again on catch up

ActualHornist · 14/11/2019 20:53

Season 6 eps 13 and 14. These are the ones where Lucy and Carter are stabbed - also an appearance by Anton Yelchin as a child, very sad storyline there.

I watched those eps the other night and sobbed. Just sobbed. I'm a few episodes along now but I love ER with all my heart and have rewatched countless times!

ActualHornist · 14/11/2019 20:55

I can't stop looking at Carol, she is the most beautiful woman.

smileylottie87 · 14/11/2019 20:56

Lucy and Carter for me, although there were so many fantastic episodes. Thanks for pointing out it's on demand, it's definitely time for another run through!

JanetandJohn500 · 14/11/2019 21:06

I'm on series 6 episode 12 right now! My favourite episode is obviously Mark's death but I 💜 the scenes where Benton takes Carter to his rehab. They have such a lovely relationship really.

Doryhunky · 14/11/2019 21:12

What Starbucks said and also I couldn’t even bear to watch the Congo one

3luckystars · 14/11/2019 21:18

Hell and Highwater

Hands down best episode of anything ever.
The one where the boy was trapped in the tunnel and the water was rising. Doug Ross emerged from the water holding the boy like Mary holding Jesus in the Pieta, and saved his life on a live feed news helicopter that was being watched in the ER. It had everything.

NanooCov · 14/11/2019 21:20

And now I'm going to have to rewatch every episode again! ER and The West Wing are the box sets I would have on a desert island.

Fatted · 14/11/2019 21:22

I used to absolutely love ER in my teens. But I'm not going to lie, I lost interest when Carter left. I was watching some terrible TV movie on Syfy the other day and it had the actor who played him in it. He's aged very well and it reminded me of how much I swooned over him in my youth. Blush

ActualHornist · 14/11/2019 21:30

I'm with you @Fatted. It was when all the original cast (bar Jerry!) had gone that I stopped watching. They changed the theme tune too which irritated....

FaithInfinity · 14/11/2019 21:35

Ooh I’m back on it, mid way through season two now. Hell and high water stands out. When Lucy and Carter get stabbed, for me it’s the moment when Lucy diagnoses herself Sad I’m sure other ones will stand out as I watch again.

EddieVeddersfoxymop I’m not sure I’d recommend practising medicine from this! Grin I started watching as a teenager and loved it. Now I’m a nurse and I watch cringing at some bits, like when they’re shoving breathing tubes down supposedly conscious patients, they never wash their hands between patients and don’t even change their gloves! Funnily enough, despite being a comedy, Scrubs is one of the most medically accurate TV shows.

I also highly recommend watching New Amsterdam if you like ER. It has a similar feel. I remember I had a ‘behind the scenes’ book about ER (geek!) and it said that they made a decision to have ceilings on the sets and proper walls with tiles, even proper theatre lights in the operating rooms, because despite being much more expensive and complex to film, it makes it seem more ‘real’ to the viewers. I noticed New Amsterdam has done the same.

Fatted · 14/11/2019 21:38

@ActualHornist it just felt like they replaced the leaving cast members with poor imitations that were meant to be the same. Luka was just the new Doug, Abbey was the new Carol and it got boring.

Fatted · 14/11/2019 21:39

@FaithInfinity YY to New Amsterdam. I've started watching this and really reminds me of ER.

FenellaMaxwell · 14/11/2019 22:14

Oh also, can we just have a moment’s appreciation for Rosemary Clooney, in Season one? When she hugs Carter and says “love you, love you, love you”. Like someone is actually, physically squishing my heart. 😭

OP posts:
Ontheboardwalk · 14/11/2019 22:17

When Benton got on the plane with Carter

FaithInfinity · 14/11/2019 22:20

Fenella yes she was fabulous. So touching. I love that she comes back in at Christmas too.

RaininSummer · 14/11/2019 22:23

I've never watched ER before and was looking forward to a massive binge watch but am struggling to get into it. Disappointing.
