How do I hide the fact that I'm pregnant at a family do?

Helpdontknowwhattodo · 06/11/2019 20:09

I'm currently 6 weeks pregnant. We've had problems TTC and I've had 2 miscarriages in the space of a year (both around 6-8 weeks)

It's my father's birthday this weekend and my partner and I are driving up to see them all. Nearly all the family will be there and we're staying overnight on the Saturday.

Problem is, I usually drink like a fishBlush, and I know there will be lots of drinking. My mum is very 'clued up' and will immediately suspect something if I don't have a drink. I'm also suffering from morning sickness which is a dead giveaway.

I don't really want to tell people I'm pregnant at this stage just incase it doesn't work out. Anyone got any suggestions for what I could say to avoid drinking?

Pretend you are on antibiotics! Congratulations and good luck Smile

6demandingchildren · 06/11/2019 20:14

That you are being tested for allergies and can't have certain foods and drinks

WelshCake2019 · 06/11/2019 20:14

Antibiotics...or leave the meal/event early after ordering a drink with a migraine giving sincere apologies x

Start moaning about a urine infection. Drink cranberry juice. Then talk about how great your gp was seeing you on short notice. Antibiotics were needed. Quite strong ones so you can't drink sadly.
Google the antibiotics so you can't be caught out v

I’d kind of go with it - say you feel unwell and sick and don’t want to drink- they’ll all jump on it and say ooo you might be pregnant and you just say I don’t think so, I did a test recently or similar. If you are superstitious that’s on plush put off I think - if they keep on just do a little laugh and ask someone a question like have you started xmAs shopping or say you are looking at going to x next summer what about you? ( around your due date which should throw them off)

Orchidflower1 · 06/11/2019 20:21

You can’t drink AT all on an antibiotic they give for severe tooth abscess. It begins with M. I’ll try and find it. DH had it and you can’t even drink for 48 hours after you’ve stopped taking. It’s something they also give alcoholics though as a little drop makes you violently sick!

Pantsomime · 06/11/2019 20:21

plush put off = ok put off !

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 06/11/2019 20:23

Antibiotics is the biggest giveaway there is!

I'd just not drink any alcoholic drinks you're given and just buy plain tonic/lemonade/coke. I wouldn't draw any attention to it at all.

Here you are op and congrats too!

antibiotics is AWFUL cover
everyone will know
Just get a glass of wine in hand and look to drink from it
If staying have a non alcoholic wine in your room and switch it. Or bathroom cupboard 🙈😂
Or g&t just without the g
Or take seedlip ‘gin’
Only other one would be possible driving because you’re ‘on call’ if you’re a doctor or something plausibke.
Or.
Take your mum to one side and say. I am pregnant. I am terrified. I don’t want anyone knowing. I’m drinking fake wine. Don’t make a thing of it. Steely glare...

Sunshinelollipops1 · 06/11/2019 20:26

In terms of drinking, don’t make an issue of it. Get your partner to drink some of them if needed. Nurse drinks. Get your own and say there is spirit in it. Honestly, people don’t pay that much attention.

I remember going to a wedding when pregnant with DC3. Another friend made this whole big issue of how her childcare and fallen through and how a friend was now babysitting and she needed to drive (as others pointed out she could still get an uber if needed). Made a massive issue of not drinking. Everyone guessed she was pregnant.
I just didn’t mention it. Didn’t drink, but just had soft drinks. When I announced everyone was saying, “weren’t you drinking at Xs wedding?”

Morning sickness not much you can do about that. Unless you say you have a migraine (and then can say why you aren’t drinking).

I had similar last weekend at my mum's 50th birthday party, I'm almost 6 weeks pregnant and nobody knows yet. Thankfully I couldn't stay too late as I had to get back to 18 month old DD, but I did manage to avoid suspicion (I think!) by making sure I always had a drink in my hand (lemonade!) and if anyone asked what i was drinking i told them vodka and lemonade.

Antibiotics are dead obvious IMO! You might as well wear a big flashing badge saying I'M PREGNANT Grin

Runkle · 06/11/2019 20:26

Say you're hungover and feeling a bit delicate?

Coffeeandcake1 · 06/11/2019 20:27

I got away with it by ordering a G&T when people were offering rounds and my dh would secretly be switching our drinks round and drinking both! Then if dh or I go to the bar on our own Id order a lemonade or something non alcoholic! Nobody noticed but dh did end up a bit drunk🙊

FreeDougJudy · 06/11/2019 20:28

I’m not sure if the party’s being held in a venue or someone’s home but could you get alcohol free drinks? You can get good ciders and wines and pretend to drink for an hour and then come down with a headache/bad tummy etc and stop drinking or leave early?

Wheelerdeeler · 06/11/2019 20:29

Tell your mum. My biggest anxiety was my mum guessing so I told her. It immediately lifted alot of the stress. She could be trusted not to tell and she didn't.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/11/2019 20:30

Fake-drink. Dh buys you a "gin and tonic" which is just sparkling water with a wedge of lime. Any actual alcohol that is bought for you just swap it with dh.

WonkyDonk87 · 06/11/2019 20:30

Antibiotics = dead giveaway Grin

I told people we were TTC but that it wasn't happening so was cutting out alcohol to give me the best chance. Told them it was taking a while and I didn't want to talk about it (not entirely untrue as it took us two years). They were pretty respectful so left it alone.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/11/2019 20:31

Antibiotics is bollocks. EVERYONE KNOWS.

You can:

  1. Pretend to drink. Bring a bottle of 'vodka' that is water
  2. Keto, diet, cleanse, sober November. Any faddy bullshit that involves not drinking
  3. Hangover. Act Envy if anyone suggests a drink. Plan the cover beforehand with a fake event the night before that you talk about. Free bar if possible. Covers the morning sickness and not drinking.
  4. If anyone suggests it, have a line ready, "I bloody hope not, that'd bugger Christmas" or a sad "no such luck I tested yesterday, please don't say anything"
AnchorDownDeepBreath · 06/11/2019 20:32

Yep, fake drink. Antibiotics has been done to death, you might as well wear a flag. Annoyingly; as I've genuinely been on antibiotics and been quizzed twice this year!

FurryTurnipHead · 06/11/2019 20:33

I survived a hen weekend whilst pregnant, like others, drinking tonic and pretending there was vodka in it, or having glass of wine that I would tip down the sink etc when I got the chance. The good thing is, once everyone else has had a few they won't even notice what you are doing. I agree that the antibiotics thing is a dead giveaway. At least pretending to drink gives you a good excuse for the morning sickness! Good luck.

WonkyDonk87 · 06/11/2019 20:33

Ooh MrsTerryPratchett has it! I like the faddy diet one. Talk AT them about the diet (as weird and ridiculous one as you can find) until their eyes glaze over and they inch away.

Congratulations OP, good luck!

comfysocks8516 · 06/11/2019 20:38

Recovering from sickness bug!

Alanna1 · 06/11/2019 20:39

Fake drink. Depending on your tipple of choice, I found either bubbles in a champagne glass or lemonade in a glass with a slice of lemon (=g&t) worked fine.
