Am I right in thinking this was a bit creepy?

I took DS(5) trick or treating tonight at hus request. Lots of houses decorated, nice atmosphere. On the way back home we passed a house that was well decorated- must have had about 8 pumpkins lit up outside. An old man was standing in the window holding a pumpkin and staring out. It seemed creepy and don't ask me why we didn't just walk straight past. Anyway, man answers door and DS says "trick or treat". Man says in a creepy voice "what kind of tricks do you have?". DS didn't know what to say, the man asked a couple more times about tricks and then gave DS a treat. As we were leaving he said "do you like my pumpkins?"

I don't know why I didn't say to him that he was being weird and creepy. British awkwardness I guess.

Tricks as in jokes or a song I’d presume. Did you do any of those or just ‘trick or treat’ and wait for a sweet?

Lj8893 · 31/10/2019 20:22

Sounds like he was just well into the Halloween spirit!

Ffsnosexallowed · 31/10/2019 20:23

Lol at "do you like my pumpkins??"- what a great line!

Halloween is supposed to be creepy 😂

sqirrelfriends · 31/10/2019 20:25

Sounds like he was getting into the spirit of it.

Sounds harmless to me but then I wasn't there.

FinnMcMissile · 31/10/2019 20:26

I know it's supposed to be creepy, it just seemed a bit much for a 5 year old. Or maybe too much for me!

haha Maybe he was just being funny? Not everyone knows how to talk to chiiden, doesn't make them a paedophile.

We had a weird man throwing coins from the top floor window. We think he was being kind, but he could have been trying to take out a small child.

Ask yourself if it was a little old lady would it be creepy? Sometimes men get as much delight from children as little old ladies and it’s unfair to assume they are sinister in any way. But it really depends as you say he was creepy sometimes your instinct knows best?

Velveteenfruitbowl · 31/10/2019 20:27

Maybe he was expecting a trick in return for a treat? Some British people seem to do that.

bobstersmum · 31/10/2019 20:28

Awww poor fella sounds like he had gone to a lot of trouble.

UrsulaPandress · 31/10/2019 20:29

Man gets in to spirit of Halloween

Gets criticised

Maybe think of a trick next time.

Mollpop · 31/10/2019 20:29

I think YABU. He didn't do anything wrong and you'd be bang out of order to tell him he was being creepy. It's Halloween FFS.

MissRabbitNeedsAHoliday · 31/10/2019 20:29

Agree with this, some people expect a trick or joke or something in return for the treats.

Milicentbystander72 · 31/10/2019 20:31

I think he sounds great!

When my two used to go trick or treating there was an old lady on one of the streets who lived alone but made extra specially decorated cupcakes every year to give out. They were amazing. You could tell ages spent SATS in them and was so excited to give them out to the kids.

Often some people used to joke to us...Trick! Instead of just handing out the sweets. It's just a laugh.

I think you're over-reacting.

ActualHornist · 31/10/2019 20:31

....it’s Halloween. It was intentionally creepy Confused

augustusglupe · 31/10/2019 20:32

Oh I feel for him a bit. My older DSis used to go to town with Halloween and loved the kiddies coming round. She doesn’t have children.
I’m sure he was harmless. I think sometimes people who try too hard can come accross creepy, but aren’t...and vice versa!!

Milicentbystander72 · 31/10/2019 20:32

SATS? I meant *ages on them.

You are being ridiculous sorry. He said nothing wrong, he entered into the spirit of Halloween and yet you wanted to tell him he was being weird and creepy. The more I think about this the more I want to tell you to get over yourself. What on earth would you achieve by being rude to him on his own doorstep? Yabvu

Passthecherrycoke · 31/10/2019 20:35

You always get a couple of houses who just miss the mark and come off a bit weird imo

louderthan1 · 31/10/2019 20:39

Jesus. Yet again. This is why I don't ever interact with children.

louderthan1 · 31/10/2019 20:40

Just keep your brats away from me because I'll never get it right 🤷🏻‍♀️

TitianaTitsling · 31/10/2019 20:42

Scotland here and you have to do a joke/song to get your treat! This was always a standby...
Not last night but the night before
Three little witches came to my door
One played a fiddle
One played a drum
And one had a pancake tied to her bum!
