I'm headed to York on Thursday with my two DC, aged 8 and 10. We will have from 9am-3pm. Recommendations for things to see / do / visit would be appreciated!

Yorvik!

MoobaaMoobaa · 29/10/2019 18:48

The National Railway museum, The Shamples and other little streets, castle museum, Museum Gardens.

MoobaaMoobaa · 29/10/2019 18:49

oh yes and Yorvik!

Ginandsonic · 29/10/2019 18:49

Is it really as good as people say? Do you think we can squeeze in jorvik and DIG in the one short day? If so I might buy the pastport and plan to go back after Christmas, possibly for a night or two

The shambles has been over run with Harry potter shops, if the DCs like Harry Potter.

PenguinsOnParade · 29/10/2019 18:51

My kids loved DIG much more than they did Jorvik. The railway museum is huge so can take a day by itself depending on how much you want to see but it's brilliant.

DrCoconut · 29/10/2019 19:00

We did Jorvik and dig in one day. They aren't free flow so you only get a certain time there (unless it's different now).

Beamur · 29/10/2019 19:03

The shop that has no name...
But take oodles of money (great but v expensive Harry Potter stuff)

gerbo · 29/10/2019 19:07

The Chocolate Story is really fun and much better than I expected. We all found it interesting and enjoyed seeing the chocolate made, and tasting! Worth the money.

witchy89 · 29/10/2019 19:15

Castle museum is fun, they have a little Victorian Street inside that you can walk through with shops and horse and carts and everything, I loved it!

IggyAce · 29/10/2019 19:55

Shambles is great but very busy. My two have always enjoyed the railway museum and castle museum. Could always climb to the top of cliffords tower if it’s a clear day for views of the city.

MrsJBaptiste · 29/10/2019 20:08

The Jorvik is good but we only needed an hour there - the tour is around 20 mins and the museum itself is pretty small. However the Castle museum is fab, we definitely spent more time there!

Twospaniels · 29/10/2019 20:29

Open top bus tour
The Shambles is over rated. I didn’t think much to it
Walk along the city walls

HermioneWeasley · 29/10/2019 20:33

Another vote for the Castle museum

And a visit to Betty’s, just the shop if the queues are huge. The pumpkin seed bread may be the most delicious thing on earth

PrincessHoneysuckle · 29/10/2019 20:35

York dungeon

Toadsrevisited · 29/10/2019 20:37

Middle feast for quick shawarma lunch, museum Gardens for run around, train museum definitely, Yorkshire museum for dinosaurs. Park and ride is great. Don't bother with Betty's- dull for kids. Foodie Market behind shambles is great for everyone to choose different stuff.

Glittertwins · 29/10/2019 20:41

Chocolate Story - prebook and then go back later. Railway Museum, Jorvik, walk around the walls.

Ouchy · 29/10/2019 20:42

I was there with my two (similar age) today. We spent 3 hours at the train museum; it wasn't enough time and there was loads to do. We pre-booked a science workshop (£2.50 per child) that followed a show (check out their timetable for what's on this half term week).

We were also at the Treasurers House (it's national trust so cost effective if you're members). It's haunted and so good for Halloween. You can pre-book either attic ghost tours or cellar ghost visit for a few (check out their website). We have done both and both were fun and atmospheric.

Other times we have done Clifford's Tower, Castle Museum and Jorvik. All really good. Have fun!

minesagin37 · 29/10/2019 20:52

Walk around the wall. York Dungeon.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 29/10/2019 20:54

If you do Jorvik and / or DIG, get the joint ticket to Barley Hall. It's very interactive and there's an exhibition on Magic And Mystery at the moment.

BarkandCheese · 29/10/2019 21:00

I spent a couple of days in York with 11 year old DD this summer. We got the York pass and did almost all the tourist attractions. Our favourites were the castle museum and the chocolate experience, I enjoyed Yorvik but felt it was a bit short, whereas we spent half a day in the castle museum.

user1573334 · 29/10/2019 21:00

Following, planning on going soon for the national railway museum. I presume they have a nice Christmas market?
