Do you sit in the dark to watch TV?

My DP has turned the light off again to watch TV. I hate sitting in the dark particularly at this time of year when the nights are getting longer. I just feel like I spend all my time in darkness (up at night due to hip and back pain/8 months pregnant).

What's everyone's preference? I just want the light on again Sad

Only if it's for a big blockbuster movie. And everyone in the room is watching (and not eating dinner of course). Think having it off all the time is a bit much :/

FusionChefGeoff · 26/10/2019 21:50

We have lamps - I hate the big light on but agree total blackness is a bit much!

PristineCondition · 26/10/2019 21:52

We turn the big light off but have a lille lamp on and candles lit

No definitely not!

It’s an ‘under the patio’ offence as far as I’m concerned!

lazylinguist · 26/10/2019 21:52

Nope. I hate sitting in the dark. Besides, I often knit in front of the tv, so I need light!

Bluntness100 · 26/10/2019 21:53

No, but we don't have rhe main light on, we have side lifts, as well as table lamps and Philips hue uplighters. I wouldn't sit in the dark, we would all find that weird.

Span1elsRock · 26/10/2019 21:53

I share your pain. DH spends all winter walking around turning lights off. We're sat in a dark living room, with only the light from my laptop and the TV. I hate hate hate the dark.

Roll on summer.

alexdgr8 · 26/10/2019 21:55

i think it's easier to see the screen without harsh light above it or shining on it, but I understand your point too.
could you install a standard lamp and sit under it?

nameymcnamechangeagain · 26/10/2019 21:55

We sit in the dark almost all of the time, the curtains only ever get opened if DP opens them, I like them shut. Love the dark!

Bluntness100 · 26/10/2019 21:55

To be fair though if it was a straight choice between ceiling light and darkness, I'd pick darkness. But who the heck would only have those two choices and not have side lights?

nameymcnamechangeagain · 26/10/2019 21:57

We don’t bar side lights!! Just big light. Will eventually get a floor lamp or something but have never had one before! My natural reaction to someone turning lights on/opening curtains is “ew why”

fanniboz · 26/10/2019 21:58

If a film is on it's nice to watch it in the dark with the sound up. Just normal telly I feel like I can hardly see it in the dark! Feels weird, even one lamp on doesn't feel like enough

PorridgeAgainAbney · 26/10/2019 22:04

No way I'd sit in the dark as that's just an open invitation for spiders to creep up and the first I'd know about it would be when I felt their hairy legs crawling on me.

Nope, at least with table lamps on there's time (for DH) to catch them and prevent me having a heart attack.

LighteningRidge · 26/10/2019 22:08

We have an uplighter which usually goes on. It doesn't give off that much light such as a ceiling light but enough not to feel suffocatingly dark. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I feel trapped by the darkness. I've put the light on and he has just asked why it is on. I might go sit in the other room and let him be. Roll on summer!

We watch tv in the dark but we both like it so it’s fine for us

ginghamstarfish · 26/10/2019 22:46

Two lamps on, hate the big central light and never use it.

Floralnomad · 26/10/2019 22:47

I only watch tv with the lights off when I’m watching in bed , downstairs I like it as bright as possible .

theydontknowweknow · 26/10/2019 22:51

We have a couple of lamps on or the wall lights with candles, I like it cosy. Would never use the big (ceiling) light as it looks horrid and would only watch TV in the dark if there's a good film on with the sound up!

Wheninfrome · 26/10/2019 22:53

One table lamp and scented candles here. I don't think I've ever used the main light. I love this time of year when I can feel cozy in my sitting room!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/10/2019 22:56

Curtains drawn at lamps on (big light off) at about 6.30 in our house. Id only have pitch darkness if we were settling down with a movie, so maybe once a month.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/10/2019 22:56

We only have the main light, which we use all the time.

Didn't realise so many people sat in the dark or pissed about with lamps and candles.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/10/2019 23:00

Yes when watching a film I put the lamp on

When watching a scary film all light are off to add to the atmosphere wtf I do this to myself it don’t know Confused

Drinkciderfromalemon · 26/10/2019 23:00

Only put the big light on in cases of cat sick, wine spillage or insect capture. Lamps all the way. Hate sitting in darkness to watch a film, barely tolerate the cinema- in my own home would have to abandon the living room kick off.

ineedaholidaynow · 26/10/2019 23:01

Isn’t it meant to cause eye strain?

DH watches it in the dark if I am not around but I will put on the lights as I don’t like watching it in the dark and will usually be reading or sewing at the same time so need a light.

safariboot · 26/10/2019 23:02

Another who turns the overhead light off. Our "side light" is leaving the door open and the hall light on though!
