Who is walking past my house at 3am?

So having exhausted all of our own theories, I wonder if MN has any good ideas.

About 6 weeks ago I bought a Ring doorbell. I'm expecting a baby in a few weeks and I'm already excited about knowing whether it's worth getting up to answer the door.

The strange bit, though, is that since having the doorbell I've noticed that someone keeps walking past my house at 3:25am. I live at the end of a cul-de-sac so it's not a through road. Theres a green out of the front of my house which separates the path running along the front of me/my neighbours and the roadway. The mystery walker is always wearing a high-vis jacket and only usually walks one way (into the dead end). It is always bang on 3:25am.

I am the last house on my row and I've already spoken to the house in the very end of the cul-de-sac and it's not them.

I wondered about the milkman but I know he comes about 5:15 as he often meets my other half.

It's not every day, but averages 3 times per week. Not always the same day.

The most recent time the camera caught them was 3:15am yesterday morning. They were 10 minutes early and this time walked both ways past my house, with a torch shining on the floor as they walked back. There is approx 20 seconds between them walking past the first and second time.

So, wise MN, any good ideas? Or am I going to have to camp out at my window from 3am tomorrow in the hope of seeing them?!

Invisible Dog is hilarious! “It reaches in and grabs right hold of your stick”

I think it must be a shift worker if it’s always the same time, but not sure where they’re going. The car idea seems most plausible to me.

dottydally · 20/10/2019 09:23

Sadly no movement last night! The last thing caught by the doorbell is us coming in just after 11 Sad

You don't need an alarm when you're pregnant and get up 5000 times for a wee Grin

@Candle1000 we didn't think he was a bin man but did wonder if we had a cheeky neighbour putting things in our bin!

@PancakeAndKeith family outing at 3am?! You have odd neighbours..

@DontCallMeShitley as far as I know there's no paper delivery but there is a milkman who visits around 5:15. The milkman was my first thought but he obviously doesn't come that early (* neighbours have milk delivered)

@giantwatermelon I'm already a people watcher so god knows what'll happen to me when I'm up with a baby! Did they catch the burglars?!

@Strongecoffeeismydrug if it's your other half, tell him I'll say hello once the baby is here and I never sleep through the night again Grin

If he climbed the fence, where would he be then?

Footle · 20/10/2019 09:50

@BillHadersNewWife , thank you for the app!

Cherrysoup · 20/10/2019 10:09

A dead end wouldn’t have stopped me using it as a youngster, I’d have been up and over a 6 foot fence if it was a shortcut. I remember walking through a cemetery and getting my suspenders caught on the spiky top of the fence 😳 I think we were a bit drunk (but very quiet and respectful, or at least so we thought!) I’d go round now, I’m not as athletic these days!

Branster · 20/10/2019 10:41

dottydally if your baby will be an absolute darling and sleep through the night, how will we ever get updates on this mystery person?

AnyMinuteNow · 20/10/2019 10:44

What news? Did you set your alarm to watch for yourself? Or you'll never know and its obviously bothering you.

Strongecoffee OP says he doesnt walk back again Confused another poster suggests this simply might not be getting caught on camera though as its too soon ? Although I don't really get that.

But camera only shows him going one way. Surely sometimes it would catch him coming back the other way.

Maybe ask your fella to give a wave? Grin

Moomin8 · 20/10/2019 10:54

Of course it's reasonable to notify the police. Under the circumstances OP has explained.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/10/2019 11:00

There really isn't Moomin8. What exactly do you think the police will do about a man walking in the dark? If OP said he was looking in the gardens or in the houses then it would be different, but he's just walking.

Aridane · 20/10/2019 11:04

Does it matter?

Moomin8 · 20/10/2019 11:04

Yes, at the same (unusual) time repeatedly into a cul de sac. Nobody has any reason to keep doing this unless they are climbing over a fence or something. The police don't have any problem being notified about such things.

Slappadabass · 20/10/2019 11:30

@Jeremybearimybaby I did find him, but not on my middle of the night jolly's, he walked through the cat flap one day and parked himself on the sofa like nothing had happened, he was gone for days!

PancakeAndKeith · 20/10/2019 11:42

Nobody has any reason to keep doing this unless they are climbing over a fence or something.

In the morning I like to do a 3 mile run. To make a circular route to my run I needed to add in going up and down a cul-de-sac to add on the extra few yards I needed.

I have a friend who doesn’t sleep. He likes to get up and walk. He does similar to add up his steps on his Fitbit.

dottydally · 20/10/2019 11:48

@Branster does such a baby exist??!! I think they're a myth so I will inevitably be up at 3am and probably 4, 5, 6 and 7 too. Grin

PancakeAndKeith

Drive thru Mc Donalds?

PancakeAndKeith · 20/10/2019 12:22

Good call.

There is a 24 hour McD about a mile and a half away.

Phycadelicsilhouette · 20/10/2019 12:32

Hahaha I’m so sorry but this has really made me chuckle! (No offence intended) reminded me of Harry Enfield s sketch show!

Who is walking past my house at 3am?
katewhinesalot · 20/10/2019 13:14

What is the other side of the fence op?

Branster · 20/10/2019 18:34

dottydally although I have not heard of one myself, plenty of new dads would testify such babies do exist!
But even if your baby wakes you up at silly o’clock, you’ll be half asleep and might not remember the details by the morning.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 20/10/2019 18:38

@EugenesAxe now I’m dead Grin

6grandc · 20/10/2019 18:47

I was awake between 3 and 5 this morning and thought of you. I nearly reached for the phone to see if there was a report but managed to control myself. Hope you solve the mystery. Sounds like you'll be up through the night for the foreseeable future so I'm sure you will!

KindergartenKop · 20/10/2019 20:54

I'm on the edge of my seat.
Maybe he's an urban wildlife enthusiast?

sorryimlateagain · 20/10/2019 21:49

Yep, I reckon newspaper delivery too - would you see them if they walked back on the other side of the green rather than past your house? I only get a Sunday paper delivered but that comes about 3.30am as I’ve heard it being lobbed into the porch when I’ve been binge watching Netflix!!!
