As the title says. Please tell me the obvious unhelpful things people in this situation have done so I can avoid doing/saying them.

PS don't put pepper in the cooking - and keep the salt low. No strong seasoning, chemo wrecks your guts at the time

Having something you've rehearsed to say when you get there might help you if you're worried about struggling with seeing a change in her appearance for the first time. Something along the lines of "it's so good to see you" perhaps? I have been told that "how are you today / this week" is also useful because it acknowledges ups and downs in her wellbeing. But it sounds as if you're already being really thoughtful and hopefully she'll see that.
