How much does it cost to rent a council house, say a 3 bed ?

A lovely person I know, how. It’s her and her dh work, struggling but have to pay 1200 per month on a private rented house 3 bed

Surely it depends on area? And in most cases it’s not as simple as ‘renting a 3 bed’ - they would need to apply to be considered, and depending on the area they may be waiting a significant amount of time.

I think it really depends on the area and type of home. A stab in dark maybe 400 -450pm. Basing that on my two bed masonette(*)

Totally depends on area. Where I live it's about £100 a week (same as I pay for my 2 bed private rent).

What a pointless question. It could be anywhere from £350 to £1000+. Not all social housing is super cheap, and in more expensive areas the chances of getting a three bed house will be very very low, you could be waiting 10+ years.

It's less than £500 here, and while I realise that it will vary from area to area, your are paying double

It varies hugely across the country. In my particular area of NE England it is £340 a month for an older three bed and £450 for a new build. This is more or less inline with private rents, the house across the road identical to ours is currently up for private rent for £400 a month and the private rent new builds on the same street as the social housing new builds go for around £500-£550 a month.

£100/week looks about right.

Not all areas of the country have ten year waiting lists, we waited less than three months four our first council property. Our council has what they call "always available" properties too, they're in less desirable areas such as problem estates or very rural locations but you can literally get the keys as soon as your application is processed.

Rent policies are set by individual councils/HAs within the boundaries of regulation. Regulation is devolved so is different England/Wales/Scotland/NI.

Mine is a 3 bed semi, gardens front and back in countryside/outskirts of town, £389 a month. North.

According to the National Housing Federation, rents for council and housing associations are set by the following criteria:

Target weekly rent is equal to

• 70% of the average rent of a 2 bedroom property

Multiplied by the relative county earnings Multiplied by bedroom rate Plus 30% of the average rent Multiplied by the average property value.

As you can see, it can change radically from one postcode area to the next.

I would also look at the waiting lists for the council area as demand can be high.

My friend pays £66 a week for a 3 bed in Yorkshire
Another friend pays £63 for a two bed in the midlands

My friend pays 1560 a month for a 3 bed in zone 6 I live down the road in a council house luckily and my rent is £408 a month.

Sorry should add mine is a two bed home hers is private rented. My neighbour private rents hers is identical to mine same layout etc, hers is £816

Ours is about £600 in the south east.

Mine is £1000 a month in Luton.

They dont have waiting lists where i live in North London so goodness knows how you get one. Ive thought about it often but it looks so complicated.

I would live to know where these areas with shirt or no waiting lists are. Often see it mentioned on MN but only in a vague not London sense.

Private rent of £1500 /month makes somewhere very rural and always available sound hugely appealing

The always available properties tend to be up in the wild and woolly parts where preference is given to people who can drive and/or are accustomed to living rurally, the other always available properties are in places like certain areas of Blyth or Ashington where you're moving your furniture in the front door and the local smackheads are simultaneously moving it out of the back door (disclaimer: the majority of people in Blyth and Ashington are nice are normal but there are a few streets/estates that let the area down greatly).
