Do all skinny celebrities smoke?

I was just surfing the net and saw some photos of Alexa Chung at fashion week and she looked particularly skinny. It got me thinking how bloody hard it must be to maintain such a low weight and so I did a bit of googling and found loads of pics of her smoking. I then did the same with a few other high profile skinny celebs and every single one I googled was a smoker (Anna Friel, Millie Mackintosh, Kate Moss, Liz Hurley, Claudia Winkleman and loads more). Now I have plenty of bad habits of my own (although not a smoker) but I still feel a bit conned that these women who grace our magazine covers are actually cheating to stay looking as good as they do (ie having a fag to kill their hunger). Some of them bang on about the benefits of working out at the gym, or doing yoga, or always going to bed "a little bit hungry", or running round after a toddler when actually they're just sparking up every five minutes but somehow they never mention that when they're asked how they stay nice and slim.

Have you never seen an overweight smoker? Grin

Passthecherrycoke · 18/09/2019 20:41

I think smoking is probably the least of the things they do to stay skinny!

MeMyselfIcecream · 18/09/2019 20:46

I have seen overweight smokers but most people I know who've given up smoking have gained weight quickly so I'm pretty sure there's something in it......

Yep I used to be stick thin and smoked regularly, would smoke at lunch so rush something small and light up after.

I quit when I got pregnant and although I was a size 6 post pregnancy (breastfeeding helped!) I am now a size 12, still don’t smoke, definitely eat biscuits instead!!!

whatswithtodaytoday · 18/09/2019 20:49

I think their skinniness is more likely caused by eating very, very little.

I was just kidding with you OP. It is hard to quit without gaining weight for a number of reasons. Everything tastes better because your tongue isn't coated with shit so it's like discovering gorgeous flavours again, the appetite suppressant is gone, general boredom and having the urge to do something with your mouth. I vape really low nicotine, and thankfully haven't gained anything yet, but I'm dreading coming off the vape.

Though, like others have said, celebrities are under a lot of pressure to look good. I imagine they're very strict with what they eat and exercise a lot because of the constant scrutiny they're under. They're in an industry where their image is their selling point, so they work hard on it.

emilybrontescorsett · 18/09/2019 21:03

There's no doubt that nicotine surpresses appetite.

abcdeg · 18/09/2019 21:05

I know this is crazy, but people come in different sizes! Who knew?

Yes, some thin people smoke. So do people of other sizes. I'm willing to bet most models are naturally thin. I have the height and stature of a model. I eat like any normal person, don't starve myself and have never even held a cigarette in my hand in my life.

Is this another way for people to feel good about themselves? Is it so hard to believe that people can be naturally thin?

Lemoneeza · 18/09/2019 21:07

gave up 5 years ago, still can't shift the 3 stone I've put on

EdWinchester · 18/09/2019 21:08

I think no celeb is going to promote smoking as a way to stay slim, but it undoubtedly helps.

Without airbrushing though, they've probably all got cat's bum mouths and that awful aged look smokers get to their cheeks.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 18/09/2019 21:08

I think it affects metabolism too. Might have been an age coincidence but my metabolism seemed to grind to a halt when I quit.

I'd rather be a stone heavier than still smoke though. Can't believe I used to smell like that.

Bluntness100 · 18/09/2019 21:09

These women are not skinny op because they smoke. I think you must know this. Sure many people gain weight when they stop, as they eat more to replace the habit. But trust me as a smoker who has gained and lost weight, smoking doesn't keep you slim.

Soola · 18/09/2019 21:09

It’s so sad that the word skinny is used with a sneer when in fact being slender/slim is the normal weight and size for people before the masses got fat and now are so used to seeing obesity everywhere that normal sized women are stupidly accused of not eating etc.

Bluntness100 · 18/09/2019 21:10

I also know plenty of skinny people who don't smoke, my daughter for one, and people who do smoke and who are over weight. Really. There is no cheat here.

LazyDaisey · 18/09/2019 21:16

Those celebs aren’t normal sized. Huge disproportionate heads on tiny frames.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 18/09/2019 21:22

I firmly believe there's a direct correlation between the decrease in smoking rates and increase in obesity rates.

Crunchymum · 18/09/2019 21:23

Isn't the most (in)famous smoker the Duchess of Cambridge? And yep she is pretty thin.

CassianAndor · 18/09/2019 21:28

I never found that smoking suppressed my appetite, in fact if I had a cigarette when I felt hungry it just made me hungrier. But it’s something you do instead of snacking.

I was at my thinnest when I was a smoker, but my life was quite chaotic then so I frequently spend the evening in the pub and didn’t have dinner. But I loved being thin. Loved it. Loved smoking, actually, but I’d never go back to it.

One thing I found was that stopping drinking made bugger all difference to my weight, didn’t lose a pound.

Whoops75 · 18/09/2019 21:32

Read somewhere that the Duchess of C smokes.

I miss smoking Sad

MeMyselfIcecream · 18/09/2019 21:38

It seems opinion is divided. Some people think that smoking has no impact on weight whereas others have first hand experience of stopping smoking and gaining weight. I remain pretty certain that smoking helps people to stay slim and I've got smoker friends who say they have a cigarette instead of food when they get hunger pangs. I have also just read that Kate Middleton is a smoker which really surprised me but then again she is ridiculously thin and all the other thin 'uns are at it....

Also @Nextphonewontbesamsung makes a good point about the correlation between a decrease in smoking and an increase in obesity rates. My auntie smoked until she was 60 and was always 8 stone and within a year of stopping she was 12 stone.

My friend has seen Kate Middleton at the odd social event and she smokes.

FireCrotch69 · 18/09/2019 22:09

@edwinchester

NO WAY

PennyNotSoWise · 18/09/2019 22:11

You've just reminded me of another downfall of quitting...nicotine cravings feel similar to hunger pangs too, so naturally people will eat when they feel them instead of waiting for it to pass. Obviously quitting is for the best, but it does suck.

I think heavy smoking affects your metabolism enough to burn only about 200-250 calories a day, that's in a heavy smoker. 250 cals is nothing, really.

You're not considering genes, either. That'll play a massive part in someone's frame, where they store fat, susceptibility to gain weight, etc.
