Do all skinny celebrities smoke?

MeMyselfIcecream · 18/09/2019 20:15

I was just surfing the net and saw some photos of Alexa Chung at fashion week and she looked particularly skinny. It got me thinking how bloody hard it must be to maintain such a low weight and so I did a bit of googling and found loads of pics of her smoking. I then did the same with a few other high profile skinny celebs and every single one I googled was a smoker (Anna Friel, Millie Mackintosh, Kate Moss, Liz Hurley, Claudia Winkleman and loads more). Now I have plenty of bad habits of my own (although not a smoker) but I still feel a bit conned that these women who grace our magazine covers are actually cheating to stay looking as good as they do (ie having a fag to kill their hunger). Some of them bang on about the benefits of working out at the gym, or doing yoga, or always going to bed "a little bit hungry", or running round after a toddler when actually they're just sparking up every five minutes but somehow they never mention that when they're asked how they stay nice and slim.

I think lots of people are missing the point here. Such as: I think their skinniness is more likely caused by eating very, very little. Exactly - eating very very little is made easier by smoking to suppress hunger pangs. Nobody's suggesting smoking automatically makes you skinnier: it's a means to managing to eat very little, and therefore be skinnier.

And: Yes, some thin people smoke. So do people of other sizes. Well, yes. Obviously if you eat normally you'll be a normal size, and if you loads you'll be fat, whether or not you smoke alongside that.

QuimReaper · 18/09/2019 22:19

But trust me as a smoker who has gained and lost weight, smoking doesn't keep you slim.

Again - I don't think OP was asking if they're accidentally slim as an unexpected side effect of smoking. They're deliberately using smoking as a weight management tactic.

QuimReaper · 18/09/2019 22:21

I also know plenty of skinny people who don't smoke, my daughter for one, and people who do smoke and who are over weight. Really. There is no cheat here.

And by the same coin, smoking isn't the only way of being slim. The only way of being slim is to burn more than you eat. It's just one way people who want to be slim may achieve it.

MeMyselfIcecream · 18/09/2019 22:32

I agree with @QuimReaper's points above. These celebs seem to be using cigarettes as a way of suppressing their appetite and therefore eating less and yet they fail to acknowledge this and pretend that they've achieved the body beautiful down the gym.

I’m normally the first one to decry the criticism of slim women as too skinny etc but Alexa Chung is VERY thin.

MeMyselfIcecream · 19/09/2019 05:19

Yep I typed in "does Alexa Chung smoke" and masses of different photos of her smoking popped up so I'd say smoking is enabling her to stay at a weight that would be impossible for a non smoker to achieve. I will now google "does Alexa Chung eat" and see what happens........

The same women who avoid smokers lines by having lipfillers etc.

Rank.

They dont really keep fit with their DVDs. Its a gimmick. The only true inspiration is Davina. She really is fit

Morgan12 · 19/09/2019 07:28

When I used to smoke I would have a fag instead of food sometimes. It was more important. I was definitely slimmer.

ButterfliesandMoths · 19/09/2019 07:33

Smoking helped me stay slim. I'd have a cigarette instead of food. Gave up about 10 years ago and put on about 3 stone, thankfully I've lost it now and quite proud of the fact that I'm slim without the help from cigarettes.

Skinnychip · 19/09/2019 07:40

I imagine most very thin celebrities would attribute ther physique to genes, that hideous and shitty excuse "running after the kids" or the odd pilates class.
In reality some will be naturally lean and others will smoke, take drugs orhave borderline eating disorders in order to maintain that.
I'm always skeptical of people having allegies/intolerances/trying to avoid wheat/going vegan. While i appreciate these are, of course, all genuine diets that some people do follow for medical/ethical reasons, as someone who has had an ED i also recognise them as more "legitimate " ways to minimise food intake. Ive never heard a celeb that was allergic to strawberries or carrots for example!!

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 19/09/2019 07:44

Smoking, not eating much, drugs, cosmetic procedures/surgery. All ways people (esp celebs) keep thin.
You can often tell the difference from when someone is healthy and naturally very slim, to someone who is starving themselves etc. to stay thin.

flapjackfairy · 19/09/2019 07:57

Smoking means your blood has less oxygen in it so works harder to pump more round to compensate. Hence the speeded up metabolism. That's why giving up contributes to weight gain.
That is what I was taught at school though that was a long time ago so may have been talking rubbish !

eeksville · 19/09/2019 08:00

Used to do modelling in my youth & then worked in fashion. Of course there are naturally slim people but I don't think they all happen to work in the fashion industry. Many people I worked with survived on diet coke & cigarettes.

jaimebravo · 19/09/2019 08:08

I used to smoke and was a size 6-8 without any exercise regime. I ate what and when I liked and never put on any weight.
I gave up and I am now a size 12. I eat healthily and I get plenty of exercise but I am unable to lose that weight. I am more active than I ever was.
I definitely think smoking increases metabolism in my case anyway.

RoyalChocolat · 19/09/2019 08:52

I am certain my (French) mother started smoking and kept on smoking to keep her weight down.

She is in palliative care because of lung cancer.

Not worth it IMO.

madeyemoodysmum · 19/09/2019 08:57

Bring thin is no temptation for me to start smoking

Smelly hair/skin
Yellow fingers
Tarred lungs
Cost
Minging teeth
Wrinkles
Massive cancer risk

I’ll stay a bit fat thanks

Ponoka7 · 19/09/2019 09:19

FireCrotch69, it was well known that Kate used to smoke (it's said that she's now quit). The gum that she used to chew, in the early days was nicotine gum.

Apparently her and Camilla bonded over them both being smokers.

Smoking does reduce appetite. Alexa has said that her Chinese background genetics help. She's also Vegetarian and doesn't eat carbs/dairy.

Models are thin, but most are still within the healthy range.

She doesn't exercise because her calorie intake is so low. I'm on a VLCD, i was obese. You stop feeling hungry. I don't know if the ketosis thing is true, but that's one explanation. A lot of us on my diet forum live on 800 calories a day and we aren't hungry.

Models don't claim to be healthy.

Ponoka7 · 19/09/2019 09:20

madeyemoodysmum, only the cancer risk applies to the rich.

It depends on why you stay a bit fat. That might be a big cancer and other disease risk.

madeyemoodysmum · 19/09/2019 09:30

Panoka7

How do they stop hair and skin smelling then?

And I’m in healthy weight thanks but could be skinny if I could be arsed but I’m not at cancer risk from my weight. Other things perhaps but aren’t we all??

Userzzzzz · 19/09/2019 09:33

To be honest in celeb land it’s probably easier to stay thin because everyone will be watching their weight. I suspect coke helps too.

Faith50 · 19/09/2019 09:56

madeeyemoody one of my colleagues smokes and I only realised after a year of working with her (I was stunned when she popped out for a smoke at one of our socials) as I could not smell it at all. I have a sensitive nose too. Immediately after smoking she washes her hands thoroughly, moisturises, sprays some sort of spray and eats mints. The worst thing about people smoking is when their hands, breath and clothes stink. Perhaps they get used to it but it really is awful especially if they have poor hygiene too.

TheMarschallin · 19/09/2019 10:21

As Jarvis Cocker once said;

“No wonder your looking thin, when all that you live upon us lip gloss and cigarettes”.

The most amazing property of the fags is that they actually seem to reverse time. I’m sure Kate Beckinsale was older than me, but according to that article we were the same age in 2016.Wink

CassianAndor · 19/09/2019 10:31

TheMarschallin I think that's a celeb thing, in real life smoking is extremely ageing. My mum was a heavy smoker for many many years and she looked way older than her sisters and friends of the same age who weren't. (She also died of lung cancer.)

QuimReaper · 19/09/2019 10:35

I had no idea about the effect of smoking on metabolism, is that confirmed?

Faith50 My husband can't tell when I've had a couple of cigarettes. Obviously if you smoke a lot the smell impregnates in your hair, and especially clothes, but if you don't smoke much, wash your hands and use mints, the smell dissipates quite quickly.

MeMyselfIcecream · 19/09/2019 16:50

It's the ones that go on about health and fitness whilst secretly smoking like a chimney who are the most annoying ones - Alexa Chung included. I'm sure being vegan and not eating dairy helps her but probably not nearly as much as the 40 silk cut a day do! I can't really articulate why it annoys me so much but it just feels like they are cheating when they are posing in skimpy outfits looking all smug and slender when the reality is that if their cigs were taken away they'd succumb to the pies and cakes just like the rest of us. An ex smoker friend told me she'd no idea what an appetite felt like until she stopped smoking.
