Marie Claire magazine closing down

Its last UK print issue will be in November then it will be digital. There are so few glossy women's magazines compared to their heyday 10+ years ago. I used to get so many, but even I've lost interest in them. I still get Red by subscription ( it's £5.50 in the shops!) but I don't enjoy it as much as I used to.

I used to love Marie Claire and Elle, but lost interest as well - the content was so far removed from real life I think they became irrelevant.

You could also buy a good book for the same price lol

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/09/2019 18:54

I’m not surprised, their all adverts now.

RosesAndRaindrops · 10/09/2019 19:17

Aw no, I love magazines and am always sad to hear of one closing down Sad
I'm not surprised that some are in decline though, as much as I love them they are just so expensive! Some of them are nearly a fiver and they're nearly all adverts.

Ah! I’m sorry to hear that, - though I’m part of the problem as I haven’t bought it in a decade. It used to have very good features and was more feminist than it’s rivals before it returned to fashion.

Enb76 · 10/09/2019 19:28

I worked for Marie Claire in my youth - I find this news strangely sad.

Frith2013 · 10/09/2019 19:29

We used to rip all the pages out that were entirely adverts - made them a lot thinner!

Women’s magazines have been absolute bilge for years. All how to get your man and be thinner.

I get Simple Things now.

Okurrrrrrrr · 10/09/2019 19:51

I agree.
Used to know the date of every single ones new issue, but only buy one very rarely now. I'm sad to hear this too, but alas I'm the declining readership.

@frith2013 to be fair that hasn't been the case for around 10 years now, they seemed to have got their acts together and a lot of the articles were genuinely hard hitting, informative and empowering.

Okurrrrrrrr · 10/09/2019 19:52

On another note, does anyone know where Glamour magazine went? I really enjoyed the writing but haven't seen it for ages now.

WeeM · 10/09/2019 19:54

That’s sad but I am also someone who hasn’t bought one in ages...maybe when I’m going on a flight but can’t remember another time. They are way too full of adverts and a lot of the them are for designer stuff that no average person could afford.

NotwhereIshouldbe · 10/09/2019 19:54

Glamour is only published twice a year now due to declining readership. It will probably close soon too.

WeeM · 10/09/2019 19:54

Glamour also went digital only a while back.

Unburnished · 10/09/2019 19:57

Sad but inevitable. I went from buying two or three a month to one a year or just reading them while I was at the hairdressers.

They became irrelevant, full of re-hashed stories and sycophantic interviews and reviews, not to mention the wall to wall adverts for £6,000 bags, £10k holidays & £8,000 jewellery.

I used to love Glamour too. I havent seen it for years though.

BrieAndChilli · 10/09/2019 20:03

I subscribe to Readly. It’s something liken £7 a month and you get digital access to hundreds of magazines. Things like glamour, Marie Claire, good housekeeping are on there, so for the price of 1 orn2 magazines a month i get to read lots and don’t feel ripped off if some are more adverts than content!!

YaySeptember · 10/09/2019 20:06

I never read or bought those glossy women's magazines, ever, because I was never interested in dieting or trying to get a man or fashion or makeup. I do still buy weekly and monthly magazines related to my hobby though but they are expensive so I only stick to one or two a few times a year.

MissLadyM · 10/09/2019 20:07

I haven't bought a magazine for years. I used to like Red but it's really gone downhill. I read mags & papers through Pressreader, free with a library card.

which1 · 10/09/2019 20:07

I could wrong but I wonder If it's down to two key factors.
First the fact that celeb gossip - a big part of most of women's mags - is now freely available and more recent on celeb gossip websites.
Second that the beauty advice they give out is overshadowed by blogs, YouTube reviews etc.

Pinkblueberry · 10/09/2019 20:08

I’ve only bought it a few times - the first 15 or so pages are literally just adverts, with plenty more inside. I think if you ripped all those pages out there would hardly be a magazine left. And it’s always been much higher priced than most other magazines - that and the fact that it’s a pretty dull read compared to other magazines, I’m not surprised it’s going. It’s not value for money and I think it’s a bit unclear who they’re actually trying to appeal to.

Namechangenecessity · 10/09/2019 20:09

I use a free version of Readly which is linked to my library membership.i have in the past subscribed to Red and I used to love Easy Living, which folded a few years ago.

We have a number of glossies delivered FOC to our works reception which we can take home.

I do like MC though.

PullingMySocksUp · 10/09/2019 20:09

What was the one that was a bit like Red but closed a few years ago?
Off on a tangent...

PullingMySocksUp · 10/09/2019 20:10

Oh bugger it, I remembered as soon as I hit Post. New Woman.
Anyway, I miss that one!

ExpletiveDelighted · 10/09/2019 20:15

I loved it when it first came out, bought it regularly for a long time but every time I've tried it in the last few years its been dreadful, all adverts and really lightweight articles.

PeterthePainter · 10/09/2019 20:28

I gave up on magazines when I could buy a paperback for less.

Loopytiles · 10/09/2019 20:30

Stopped buying mags in the 90s as they were all ads and making women feel shit.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/09/2019 20:44

I stopped reading after an article on trafficking women spent a paragraph explains what the women who worked for the charity were wearing.

Made me angry and sad. TBF I think that was the North American edition.
