Marie Claire magazine closing down

Its last UK print issue will be in November then it will be digital. There are so few glossy women's magazines compared to their heyday 10+ years ago. I used to get so many, but even I've lost interest in them. I still get Red by subscription ( it's £5.50 in the shops!) but I don't enjoy it as much as I used to.

Marie Claire was good, and there was something called Eve, I think?

I worked in women press for many years, including Elle and the launch of Red - which at the time was very exciting. It even made the news at 10. Of course there loads of ads, that where the money lies. Its hard for people like the fragrance clients to advertise on the digital versions as they cant do the scent strips or gatefolds . I love the glossies and always will

I like the scent strips.

I also think that magazines are a much more honest form of advertising than the current influencer advertising, they don't pretend to be one of you while secretly selling you stuff, you know where you stand with a magazine - it's all advertising.

In its prime, Marie Claire was groundbreaking and informative, I stopped buying it when it became full of high end adverts. It doesn’t mean that I don’t still feel sad though.

I flipped through a women's magazine at the dentist last year, I can't remember which one. I couldn't understand why anyone would pay a few pounds for what is basically a booklet of adverts. I accept I'm not their target market though and have never contributed to that particular economy.

I used to subscribe to Good Housekeeping and Woman and Home. I would pass them on to my mum who in turn would sometimes pass them onto a friend. My sister also liked to read them when home visiting. I cancelled them when I retired. Recently bought one for my mum when in hospital and was shocked at the price. I buy magazines very rarely now. Used to love Instyle especially the USA edition which my sister would bring over when visiting.

Marie Claire went from aspirational to irrelevant quite a while ago, IMHO. No-one on a vaguely normal income can afford most of the stuff in their adverts or that they promote, all the models are impossibly thin, it's full of sexist, gender-stereotype reinforcing claptrap. IMHO. As well as massive amounts of adverts. It might look pretty but that's about it, really. Same goes for most of the thick, glossy 'Women's magazines".

I can read them for free, via an app that I don't even have to pay for... I don't bother because they're pointless IMO.

Viviennemary · 02/07/2020 23:12

I don't think I've read more than a couple of copies. Possibly at the dentist or hairdresser. I just got reminded of the She but I've not seen that around for years. It was quite good at one time. I think a lot of magazines are going to collapse after this. Sad I agree £5 for a magazine is hardly worth it when you can buy a paperback for the same price.

Always read GQ in the hairdressers. It can keep me going through a full colour and cut. Interesting articles, loads about politics, current affairs, in depth interesting interviews that don't go on about "how do you lose weight?" whats your favourite fashion fail?"

In contrast I can skim read a womans mag in 5 minutes, and thats stretching thing it.

Ragwort · 02/07/2020 23:17

I also have Readily, loads of different magazines on there.

But most of the 'Women's Magasines'' are just so boringly samey ...you know exactly what articles they will have each month. ... Slimming & Fitness in the New Year, Easter recipes, what to do the Summer holidays ... leading into cosy back to school type articles in the Autumn and then the Christmas food/party outfits/how to stay stress free articles. I do wonder how they come up with new recipes for cooking a turkey every year Grin,

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 02/07/2020 23:19

Clothes are always ridiculously expensive, and the skin care they recommend as well. madness, who can afford that?

WellTidy · 02/07/2020 23:29

I like GQ too. I used to read it in a local coffee shop every month or so before lockdown. I agree that there is masses more content in there than any women’s magazine and for the same price. The editor is Kylie’s chap and I think he has done a fanatic job with it.
