What have been your best buys in abroad supermarkets this year.

I do love a foreign supermarket, and equally love hearing about what others have been buying.

I love enormous bags of crisps especially paprika, remoulade, wine on tap, cheese, different herb mixes, glass jars of yoghurt, cheese.

Today I saw individual pots of fondue and also spinach tarts. I wished that I was self catering. And frozen creamed spinach.

Earlier this year I bought a bog standard jar of lentil bolognese and it was delicious. Also jarred pulses. Sigh.

And cheese...

Ooh I love foreign supermarkets! Knorr borscht cup-a-soups and mint vodka in Krakow, little tubs of creamy fish dip in Budapest and packet falafel mix in Vienna - my hand luggage is always rammed coming home Grin

I live abroad so always go on a bender in Tesco and Asda when I'm back in the UK; I was nearly crying when the BITCH at Liverpool airport confiscated my Seriously Strong Cheddar Spread 😰

Mint vodka Smile

The mint vodka was lush with sparkling water and a slice of lemon, it cost about €2 for a small bottle 😋

My friends in the UK always ask me to bring back tubs of 'hot cheese salad' which is like a thick dip made from feta cheese, Greek yoghurt and chilis.

Puglia - every variety of Loaker wafers not just the vanilla ones you get in Costa here; lemon & ginger Haribo (bought as a last resort when we couldn't get any lozenges for DD's sore throat but surprisingly nice); balsamic vinegar in a spray bottle; fonzi crisps

SequinnedSlippers · 02/09/2019 16:26

Lays Olive Oil Crisps. Mmm.

MadamDeMorency · 02/09/2019 16:27

I like the idea of spray balsamic.

And crisps always taste better in the land of foreign.

Lays oregano crisps, sigh.

I have a deep and abiding love for Albert Heijn, the Dutch supermarket chain. Joppiesauce flavoured crisps, Chocomel, big bars of chocolate with chunks of stroopwafel in, ontbijkoek (gingerbread they eat for breakfast), and spicy mixed nuts to have with beer. Dutch peanut butter is also amazing - I got a speculoos flavour one last time. Like most European supermarkets, the range of cheese/nibbles for aperitifs is great. We're back in the Netherlands next week and I fully intend to do a mad trolley dash.

MNetters who're off to France (particularly Brittany/Normandy), look for Brets crisps. I still have dreams about their mustard & pickles flavour crisps.

purplecorkheart · 02/09/2019 17:03

I buy a good bit from the Dutch Expat Shop might be worth taking a look.

I totally agree about the crisps aboard. So much nicer than the ones here

DisplayPurposesOnly · 02/09/2019 17:07

Borscht cupasoup! Right, that's Krakow on my list.

MadamDeMorency · 02/09/2019 17:13

I bought some lovely rose in the Netherlands with flip top bottles, still using years later. Dc adore Chocomel.

In croatia and slovenia - bottles of beer mixed with fizzy grapefruit (Radler).

Todayissunny · 02/09/2019 17:18

Crisps abroad are horrible compared to uk ones. I don't live in the uk and get very excited when I can get British salt and vinegar.

iklboo · 02/09/2019 17:20

Lays Wild Mushroom crisps. So delicious but can't get them in the UK.

Todayissunny · 02/09/2019 17:21

@Nonstopbuttmachine happened to me too with my precious stock of Coleman's English mustard.

Laska2Meryls · 02/09/2019 17:22

Ronsters · 02/09/2019 17:26

You can buy borscht cupasoup in Morrison's (Knorr), in the world foods section.

MadamDeMorency · 02/09/2019 17:35

JeffJarrett · 02/09/2019 17:45

7UP cakes from Walmart. DH got one and got an extra one for me (sounded vile and I wasn't keen..) turns out they're like the best moist lemon drizzle cake with a hint of lime. Need to take some home!

iklboo · 02/09/2019 17:50

@MadamDeMorency - Bulgaria. So good DS has decided he now likes mushrooms.

TannatTart · 02/09/2019 17:52

@jeffjarrett. What?!?! I live in the land of Walmart, I will be off to investigate once the Hurricane madness has passed. I’m off to Iceland soon. Anyone have recommendations? I always make time for a supermarket trip.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 02/09/2019 17:53

I came on to say the slovenian grapefruit beer but I've been beaten to it Smile.

Also Cockta, which is a kind of dandelion and burdock inspired coca cola only found in Slovenia. I've tried to find it in London with no joy Shock.

froomeonthebroom · 02/09/2019 18:00

In France: chips à l'ancienne saveur moutarde, apéricubes, enormous lettuces, bbq packs with sausages and pork kebabs. I could go on......
