What have been your best buys in abroad supermarkets this year.

I do love a foreign supermarket, and equally love hearing about what others have been buying.

I love enormous bags of crisps especially paprika, remoulade, wine on tap, cheese, different herb mixes, glass jars of yoghurt, cheese.

Today I saw individual pots of fondue and also spinach tarts. I wished that I was self catering. And frozen creamed spinach.

Earlier this year I bought a bog standard jar of lentil bolognese and it was delicious. Also jarred pulses. Sigh.

And cheese...

Albert Heijn in the Netherlands. Seriously love their Lavender and black pepper stroopwafel.
Then there's the all the crackerbread, I came back with loads and chocolate sprinkles for bread 😁

You can probably get them here, if you look, but I love my herb scissors from LeClerc in France, can snip bits off a plant straight over the food. (They are like 5 sets of scissor blades close together). Also we had to buy a car seat in Carrefour when DSs broke during the ferry crossing which was awesome.

Food wise, all kinds of pastries and breads, cheap wine and olives, and peanuts in shells

burnttoastandjam · 02/09/2019 19:59

I live abroad but the Knorr vegetable stock cubes in Italy beat everything else. We can't live without oxo cubes from the UK and our treat is Walkers prawn cocktail crisps.

I love aromat, it is the most amazing herby stuff ever. Use it on everything.

@TannatTart I'm in Vegas, they are fresh single packaged bundt style, among the iced sugar cookies!

Hopefully they have them where you are too. They're delicious.

I was pmsl when one of my boys declared that going to the supermarket en route home at my insistence so I could buy pastis for cheap and Kirk cheese by the bucketload they could spend their last euros, was the best day of the trip. We’d been to Paris/Eurodisney but apparently Carrefour was better. I couldn’t argue! 😂

I love foreign supermarkets although the Spar in Skiathos was a bit disappointing. 😞

Anything else from Krakow going there tomorrow

SequinnedSlippers · 03/09/2019 00:35

I have fond memories of the White Peach Fanta in Japan AnnaBegins

GrimDamnFanjo · 03/09/2019 00:58

Latvia anyone?

PawPawNoodle · 03/09/2019 01:36

I too loved Albert Heijn! When I die please brine me in lime Optimel (a fantastic yoghurt drink for those who dont know). I also loved the coffee creamer which we stupidly do not have here.

My local supermarket started stocking chocomel! Far superior to any chocolate drink in the UK

scaryteacher · 03/09/2019 08:04

Huge bars of Lindt in a supermarket in the middle of Vienna. Decaffeinated Earl Grey tea bags in Waitrose in Egham (which is foreign for me). The wild boar in Carrefour near Brussels( but that is home until October).

EachandEveryone · 03/09/2019 12:55

Poland, anyone?

ThorosOfMyr · 03/09/2019 13:04

I came home with Ribehus Cumin cheese and Den Gamle Fabrik Raspberry jam, plus the rhubarb and strawberry version; huge bottle of Danish remoulade; proper liquorice (bags and bags); gravy browning (?!?); and I always buy proper candles in boxes of 50 (I bought two boxes back) and 200 tealights from Irma in Denmark. I didn't bring home any herrings or pastry though this time! I do love Lays crisps - ate tonnes while away (paprika bugles, yum) - why don't they sell them here?

Camomila · 03/09/2019 13:39

Not a supermarket, Italian pharmacy - liquid infant paracetamol you can hide in milk/juice. Made life so much easier than calpol that DS hated/spat out. Shame he's too old/heavy now.

Frizzini - like rennies/gaviscon but taste nicer like fizzy lemon sweets.

Mostarda - seasonal, you can only find it near Christmas - it's like spicy whole pickled fruits you eat with meat. Delicious

Tinned Tuna is also much nicer than UK tinned tuna, not sure why though.

MadamDeMorency · 03/09/2019 18:36

I forgot about cumin cheese.

I bought amazing ear drops in Kos for ds blocked ear. Never found anything as good in the UK.

Carrefour is our local supermarket. Nothing on earth beats their trianon pattiserie. Also love their ready made tabbouleh (which is what we'd call couscous) and the enormous range of butters - I could spend hours choosing. And of course the big tubs of fromage blanc.

sueelleker · 03/09/2019 18:58

My husband had a bad cold in Tenerife, and I got some paracetamol in sachet form. I don't know why, but it seemed to work better than tablets. (Began with an F if anyone can remember it)
