Does anyone ever ask women they don't know for a tampon/sanitary towel in public toilets?

I'm nearly 40 and I've never done this, or had anyone ask me. Friends yes, strangers no.

Is this something that women really do?

I haven't, but I would help anyone who asked me.

metalkprettyoneday · 01/09/2019 08:15

I’ve been asked before , yes it does happen and I think it feels ok in a small space with just females . People are often chatty in queues inside the ladies.

No, never. It wouldn't occur to me. I'd just stuff toilet paper until I got something. But to be honest, I've never needed to do that either!

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 01/09/2019 08:17

Yes several times. I’ve been asked and asked.

wafflyversatile · 01/09/2019 08:17

I haven't but I would be happy to help if a stranger asked me, not shocked that someone asked.

Why the pearl clutching?

PancakeAndKeith · 01/09/2019 08:17

I’ve never asked. I would do if I was in complete dire straits but that’s never happened. I’ve asked friends before and if someone asked me then I would too.

MrsMozartMkII · 01/09/2019 08:17

Yes. Both ways. It's fine.

delilahbucket · 01/09/2019 08:18

I've never asked but would be happy to help anyone who did.

PancakeAndKeith · 01/09/2019 08:18

Why the pearl clutching?

Who is pearl clutching?

BertrandRussell · 01/09/2019 08:18

My brother had to ask for my niece when her first period started on a train. People were lovely to him about it.

But no, i’ve personally never asked or been asked.

EmeraldShamrock · 01/09/2019 08:19

Yes I have asked once years ago as a teen.
I was far from home I was very grateful.
I've been asked for a condom too. I didn't have one to give. Wink

TurtleyLost · 01/09/2019 08:19

No pearl clutching Confused

Just curious. It's something I see mentioned but have never experienced and neither had any if the RL friends I asked, so obviously I turned to MN for a wider range of experiences!

I haven’t but wouldn’t think twice about asking someone in an emergency.

RJnomore1 · 01/09/2019 08:20

Was it mentioned by a particular Canadian? 😕

I have once - I had just flown long-haul and come on 48hours early, had nothing with me and didn't know where nearest open shops were. So I asked all and sundry in the loos about the shops and, in return, got not just the info but also a tampon.

Years ago, still hugely appreciated.

I no longer carry sanpro (menopause) so would not be able to help these days, but I would have supplied anyone on request in the days when I did.

TurtleyLost · 01/09/2019 08:24

RJ yes among others! Made me curious as to whether this is a thing that happens in real life or is just an imagining of how women's toilets really are.

OP posts:
speakout · 01/09/2019 08:24

Why do you ask OP?

I have never been asked or asked anyone. I usually always carry suppplies in my bag and things like tissues and plasters. If I have been caught short then have used a wad of toilet paper stuffed in my knickers until I make it to a shop. I imagine most women would do the same.

PinkFlowerFairy · 01/09/2019 08:25

I absolutely wouldn't ask and cant imagine anyone asking.

Id jsut stuff a wad of loo roll

I think a teen starting her period would be beyond mortified if her dad asked all and sundrh on the train/anywhere. Ive taught mine if she starts anywhere where she diesnt have access to her sanitary towels to just wad some loo roll til she does

BlackNoir · 01/09/2019 08:27

I've been asked and was able to help. I haven't had to ask for myself yet.

CmdrCressidaDuck · 01/09/2019 08:27

I asked once. I'd just got on a train from Scotland to London and unexpectedly started early, and they didn't have them in the toilets, so I asked a woman sitting in the carriage. She obliged kindly.

Never been asked but I'd have no issue with it and would certainly provide if I could (almost exclusively use a Mooncup these days but still have tampons secreted away in many of my bags).

TurtleyLost · 01/09/2019 08:28

I ask because more than once I've seen it mentioned as a thing that women regularly do in public toilets. And as I've never asked or been asked in 25 years of being a woman of menstruating age, I wondered if I was massively out of touch or if it was a bit of poetic license from those who claim it's a thing.

CmdrCressidaDuck · 01/09/2019 08:28

Why all the "I would NEVAH"? Why not ask someone who is quite likely to have what you need for this small and very doable kindness?

BertrandRussell · 01/09/2019 08:29

“I think a teen starting her period would be beyond mortified if her dad asked all and sundrh on the train/anywhere”
Fortunately the people on the train were nice and discreet as was my db. It was an Aberdeen to London train so a long time to manage with loo roll!
