Does anyone remember the BBC programme Child of Our Time? 19 year old Parys, son of Alison Lapper, has died :( I feel like I watched him grow up on the show, it is really sad.

I read this too and told my DS (who's now 12 years old) that I remembered seeing the programme. She got Parys out of the car and told him to 'put his hands on the car' which he did. Kept him safe whilst she got to him. I used to the do the same with DS when we were in a car park. I'd take him out of the car and tell him to keep his hands on the car - I never went anywhere obviously but it only takes a split second. I learned that from her and Parys. So I'd like to thank them both for that.

So very, very sad.

It's absolutely tragic.
I mean, it always is, for anyone to lose a child - but she had so many odds to overcome to have him and keep him, it's just heartbreaking.

I remember Alison as well - I can't remember if the show was Child of Our Times or whether she did another one just about her - but I remember being truly in awe of her skills with him as a baby.

So very bloody sad. RIP Parys - condolences to your mum, family and friends Thanks

That’s so very sad, heartbreaking for Alison and her family.

BG2015 · 27/08/2019 16:32

That's so sad. My eldest was born in December 1999 and is the same age.

Awful news.

Chocrock · 27/08/2019 16:34

Such very sad news. He couldn’t have been more loved.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 27/08/2019 16:35

How very sad.

The loss of any young life, full of potential, is tragic, but this seems particularly heartbreaking.

Same here. DD is the same age as the Child of Our Time kids so I loved that show. I picked up on that and always used it when dd was little in various situations and it worked a treat. I could trust her not to bolt off while I had my hands full, etc. They seemed so close and she was so encouraging of him. Really, really tragic. Feel so sorry for his mum, she was abandoned by her parents as a very small child/baby wasn't she? I got the feeling she was quite isolated when he was younger. The dad didn't stick about. Hope she has got some good friends/support.

I saw this this morning, his poor mother. So sad.

weegiemum · 27/08/2019 16:39

So terribly sad.

My dd1, 19, is a 2000 baby and I loved watching Child Of Our Time as it was her. As she got older and more "arty" she reminded me a lot of Parys, and she was inspired a lot by his Mum and her art degree. Dd1 is now a student at the Glasgow School of Art and watching this programme really inspired her.

Sending all my blessings to Alison as she just starts to deal with her unbelievable loss. May Parys rest in peace and never be forgotten.

Yestermo · 27/08/2019 16:41

So sad to hear this Sad. I watched the programme and have dcs the same age and was so inspired by his mum's parenting skills and love for her child despite her physical difficulties. RIP young man, my heart goes out to you and your family and friendsFlowers

I live in the same town as this family and have mutual friends on fb, saw the news over the weekend and and just so heartbroken for them. She talked a lot about her joy at being a mother and how she had to fight for him when he was a baby. Utterly tragic and so unfair. Poor kid.

Peakypolly · 27/08/2019 16:48

I commented on the other thread how sad I am about the loss of this beautiful boy.
It is not my understanding that Child of our Time has ceased. I do hope not, my DD is also that age. I thought R Winston was disappointed that filming had been reduced?

Afternooninthepark · 27/08/2019 16:51

I loved that programme. That is so very tragic and sad. I always though Alison was such a brave, strong woman. Heartbreaking news.

Child of Our Time was cancelled. I was reading about it when I was watching the 7 Up series. I read that the family have asked for donations to a mental health charity. He always seemed so full of the joy of living when I saw him on tv. Just really infectiously enthusiastic. It's so sad that someone so young has died.

RaspberryRippleCrisps · 27/08/2019 17:00

Oh that's so sad. I had great admiration for his mum,Alison.

TiddleToddle · 27/08/2019 17:02

How unspeakably sad. Thinking of Alison and the rest of Parys' loved ones.

Lweji · 27/08/2019 17:04

Feeling very sad for her. Losing a child is always tragic, but it seems every more poignant in her case, after all she went through.

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 27/08/2019 17:04

I thought it was the documentary series "Born to be Different" which was cancelled .

londonrach · 27/08/2019 17:05

Very sad. Loved child of our time. The bond between parys and his mum was very special

bookworm14 · 27/08/2019 17:08

This is terribly sad. I have followed A Child of our Time since the beginning and remember Parys well. His poor mother.

LoveGrowsWhere · 27/08/2019 17:11

Such sad news.
It's rare that I remember the names of people in tv programmes but Parys & Alison Lapper clicked immediately. They made such a lovely impression; warm & inspirational. Flowers

Benjispruce · 27/08/2019 17:15

Oh no how sad, what happened? I remember him and his inspiring mum. I had no idea the program was over. I expected it to carry on like 7 up. My DD is about a 9 months younger younger so I always watched it.
