As per the title. I've got to have a medical procedure tomorrow and can't eat anything except clear liquids until 7am tomorrow and then nothing at all until 12pm.

I'm drinking loads of water and black and mint tea but I'm ravenous.

Any tips please?

Eat jelly? May need to avoid red and purple ones

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 27/08/2019 13:33

Broth

SudowoodoVoodoo · 27/08/2019 13:33

Stock cube? Would replace salts lost through sweating in the heat.

Ellabella989 · 27/08/2019 13:35

Gummy bears are allowed as long as not the red ones. Lollipops too x

Chanandlerbong89 · 27/08/2019 13:36

Chew gum. Gives you the taste satisfaction and the satisfaction of chewing

Thanks for the replies.

Interesting that pp are mentioning jelly and gelatine cos consultant definitely said no food. I might try and call the nurse.

Oxo to drink. You can also have jelly with no fruit in.

BlueCornsihPixie · 27/08/2019 13:53

Chicken bone broth?

pollyhampton · 27/08/2019 13:53

I have this procedure fairly regularly. Really, you just have to get on with it and not eat anything. Keep up with the water, distract yourself and focus on counting down until it's all over. Last time I had it done a woman was turned away for the third time because she had eaten jelly (not sure of the colour!) so be warned.

BlueCornsihPixie · 27/08/2019 13:55

Also I think you can eat ice long as long as they are just juice based

BlueCornsihPixie · 27/08/2019 13:56

Ice lollies*

I had a colonoscopy fairly recently and sucked clear fruit sweets, not anything remotely red though and drank the odd cup of powdered bouillon. Also drank lucozade as well as water, tea, coffee (no milk),

BalloonSlayer · 27/08/2019 14:05

I found that lemonade with sugar in (ie non diet) helped me feel less hungry. Although there's only so much you can bear before you feel all fizzed out.

ShippingNews · 27/08/2019 14:12

Jelly is fine if you're on clear fluids. It melts in your stomach, so it's no different from drinking clear liquid. I was on clear fluids for a couple of weeks after bowel surgery so I'm very familiar with what you can have. I lived on clear chicken broth , jelly, apple juice , and tea.

BustedDreams · 27/08/2019 14:21

Stick to what they advise! It’s crap I know.

ahughes20 · 27/08/2019 14:25

According to mayo clinic

  • Water (plain, carbonated or flavored)
  • Fruit juices without pulp, such as apple or white grape juice
  • Fruit-flavored beverages, such as fruit punch or lemonade
  • Carbonated drinks, including dark sodas (cola and root beer)
  • Gelatin
  • Tea or coffee without milk or cream
  • Strained tomato or vegetable juice
  • Sports drinks
  • Clear, fat-free broth (bouillon or consomme)
  • Honey or sugar
  • Hard candy, such as lemon drops or peppermint rounds
  • Ice pops without milk, bits of fruit, seeds or nuts

I'd give fizzy drinks a go, and perhaps boiled sweets to give you the sensation of having food in your mouth?

newtb · 27/08/2019 14:42

Don't, just don't drink coke. The first time I had a colonoscopy, the list /specialis said coke and I didn't have any. The second time I did and it was a really unpleasant experience - red hot (or it felt like it) phosphoric acid rocketing out of my nether regions is not something I'd like to repeat.

Thank goodness, it's 2 years for the next one!

Mrsjayy · 27/08/2019 14:49

I have had to do this for bowel procedures I used to drink oxo you are still starving but feel like you have had something.

RocketRacoonsFurryBalls · 27/08/2019 15:01

Lime jelly
Clear chicken bone broth
Coconut water

That’s what I had (lots of it), in a sort of rota along with the delicious clear-out stuff.

It wasn’t too bad.

Mrsjayy · 27/08/2019 15:05

God sake the mention of the clear out stuff had me sweating it is horrific !

frippit · 27/08/2019 15:05

A nurse told me to buy the packet mix knorr chicken noodle soup and sieve the noodles out! It's a clear soup and was fine x

wineoclockthanks · 27/08/2019 15:06

Thanks again.
I'm not having a colonoscopy , I'm swallowing a camera thingy (results will be in a cinema near you soon Grin )
