Has this happened to anyone? Amazon delivery fraud/theft.

My housemate has just received an Amazon delivery of an ipad and stylus ... except that when he opened both boxes, he found that he has received two packets of Weetabix and a tin of tomatoes (obviously because they're a similar weight)!

Additional info:

The package was going to be delivered last night, but the courier knocked and didn't wait - so it was redelivered this afternoon.

It didn't look like the box had been tampered with, but that doesn't mean it wasn't.

Currently, Amazon are saying that he can't be refunded immediately and there needs to be an investigation first (understandably) - but they have also said that 'it was an ipad when it left us'.

Has this happened to anyone else?

No that’s terrible! Maybe try CAB for advice on his rights.

BadgerBadgerMushroom · 12/08/2019 17:47

Not experienced this myself but that's bizarre!

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/08/2019 17:48

What does the delivery note say?

Troels · 12/08/2019 17:48

Wow thats awful. Can't wait to see what Amazon does. How would the courier know what was in the boxes. Wouldn't it be more likely to have been substituted at the Amazon warehouse?

Thesuzle · 12/08/2019 17:48

It happens a lot and they always side with the seller?sender

wibbletooth · 12/08/2019 17:48

Google it - I’m sure I’ve read it’s an increasing problem. Not sure what the solution is though...

Jammiebammie · 12/08/2019 17:50

We had similar with a MacBook from amazon a few years ago (no food substitutions though, just stolen) It was a third party seller and said they said they’d investigate but we had the money back within a few days. I find amazon customer service to be the best tbh, always side with the customer and always graciously replace or compensate so your housemate shouldn’t have an issue getting money back.

I had a really dodgy amazon delivery where there were two guys in the van, one of them came to the door and rang the bell, I was stood the other side of the door yet by the time I had opened it he was almost back in the van and the other one had the engine running ready to go. It was only because I called out that they came back and gave me my parcels. Usually they deliver with neighbours if we're not in but they were keen to go ASAP. Very strange!

I realise this doesn't actually help much but I've definitely heard of things being substituted before.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 12/08/2019 19:18

Thanks, everyone! I'm really quite angry on his behalf (and he's none too pleased either!).

We've noticed that delivery problems have increased markedly recently - from the same thing that you said, @gungera, to "Prime Next Day" actually being 2 or 3 days, to getting things we hadn't ordered.

Amazon have said they'll get back to him, so I'll let you know what happens when we know.

@MrsSchadenfreude - No delivery note, unsurprisingly!

That is shockingly bad...

I would not be happy

Hoppinggreen · 12/08/2019 19:24

Something similar happened to DH
I can’t remember the details but it was from a 3rd party seller and it was something techy but when it arrived it was something of a much lower value instead but a similar weight
Amazon were very good and refunded the item very quickly

Lumene · 12/08/2019 19:31

Just a thought but did you pay with either credit card or Paypal as that may give you some extra protection.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 12/08/2019 19:32

When I was pulling Amazon trailers, there was always a drift of emptied packaging on the floor where various desirable bits of kit had been stolen. Given the way they treat staff, I'm surprised more doesn't go missing.

NoBaggyPants · 12/08/2019 19:33

You rarely get delivery notes with actual Amazon deliveries now, which from the looks of it, this is. Also it looks like the sticker was over the tape, so it would be very difficult for the parcel to have been tampered with after it left the warehouse.

Amazon will be able to track this back to where and who packed it, and investigate accordingly. They'll refund once they've done this.

I thought the buying prime stuff but then not being prime only happened to me ! Blush

NoBaggyPants · 12/08/2019 19:36

Just checked, they do sell Weetabix and Napolina tomatoes! It would be worth weighing the items plus packaging to show that it matches the weight on the packaging.

VeThings · 12/08/2019 19:39

This happened to me with a Fitbit. Got the Fitbit box but it was empty.

Amazon sorted really quickly and sent another in a plastic security bag that was completely sealed, so couldn’t be tampered with.

WowThatsSoCool · 12/08/2019 19:46

That’s never happened to me before, but not to worry Amazon are very good when it comes to refunds and replacements. Last Christmas I ordered a rather expensive Lego set for one of the boys, when I checked the tracking it showed delivered and signed for, I called Amazon to explain and I was refunded immediately.

Keep us all updated.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 12/08/2019 21:17

Thank you all so much - he's feeling more upbeat now! I will definitely report back. I wonder how many of the people who do this get away with it, and how many are caught.
