Where would you suggest for a holiday in October?

Just me and DH. We are in our 50's. Looking for somewhere beautiful but not hot. We like to walk and enjoy nature as well as historical sites and art/museums. We have pondered the Italian Lakes, Sicily and Boston/Massachusetts. Where else might we like?

Crete

Slovenia. Totally stunning countryside and interesting heritage.
Or Gdańsk in Poland is very interesting culturally and there are some coastal areas.
The Black Forest in Germany.
Geneva

Malmo.

Boopear · 08/08/2019 21:14

I've done Iceland in October (end) Dark enough to see the lights but not too cold at all. Pretty perfect if you feel that way inclined.

Apolloanddaphne · 08/08/2019 21:15

I don't think we would go to Malmo. We went to Finland and the Ã…land Islands in the summer.

I am taken with the idea of Crete. I absolutely love mythology so it would be ideal.

Croatia. It is all beautiful but we liked Pula

TSSDNCOP · 08/08/2019 21:20

Seville

stucknoue · 08/08/2019 21:21

Cyprus, Crete, Sicily are possibles are south, obviously the canaries, but if temperature doesn't matter just choose where you want to visit, will be quieter than in summer

Alisha779 · 08/08/2019 21:22

Boston MA is absolutely amazing, and I'm keen to go back and further explore New England. If you can afford it then it would be a no brainier for me, especially with the Autumn colours.

NoHummus · 08/08/2019 21:23

How about Malta? Still warm at that time of year, plenty of historic sites to visit. I don't know if I would describe it as beautiful although some parts are pretty. You could easily combine Sicily and Malta as you can travel by ferry between the two.

Apolloanddaphne · 08/08/2019 21:26

I have done Malta, Cyprus and the Canaries. Would like somewhere breathtakingly beautiful. We have been to Boston many times but never stayed out of the city. I think i would love to venture out to the lakes and see the trees in the fall.

The Cinque Terre in Italy. The most stunning coastline, gorgeous little towns clinging to the rocks. Beautiful.

Apolloanddaphne · 08/08/2019 21:55

Cinque Terra is a good shout. May look closer at that.

Scottish Islands?

Definitely "not hot" Grin but tourist numbers are down and plenty of history to check out.

PenguinsRabbits · 08/08/2019 22:27

Maderia or Norwegian fjords and moose, seals, otters etc though weather in Norway will not be great then. Amalfi Coast has quite a lot on it Pompeii, can take trip to Capri, Vesuvius.

Maybe Cape Town - penguins on the beach, Table Mountain etc

TolstoyAteMyHamster · 08/08/2019 22:29

I'd go for Iceland. Not enormous amounts of art but certainly ticks the stunningly beautiful box. It's like nowhere else I have ever been.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/08/2019 22:30

Madeira?

applecatchers36 · 08/08/2019 22:36

Naples, Roman archeological remains at Herculeum and Pompei. Amalfi coast accessible and amazing food and drink.

October is the perfect time to do this. If it's early October then go up to Acadia National Park in Maine and do some hiking, and stop off in Portland ME or Portsmouth NH for a day or two.

Lots of beautiful countryside all over New England.

Housewife2010 · 09/08/2019 06:48

Puglia is gorgeous.

Valencia, visit the holy grail.
Eat paella.
Lovely weather and beautiful. Easy to get to.

BillieEilish · 09/08/2019 07:24

I also agree with Rome, I lived there, it is wonderful, but it is SO expensive. Seriously, SO, SO expensive.
