Help me diagnose this weird rash on DS's knees

Dauphinois · 08/08/2019 14:46

This rash has appeared over the last day or two. Ds(10) can't remember doing anything that might have irritated them, and they're a bit itchy but not unbearably so. He doesn't generally suffer from eczema or any other skin conditions.

Any thoughts?

Looks like he’s been kneeling in something that he’s a bit sensitive to? I’d make sure the his legs were washed, then try a bit of hydrocortisone ‘bite and sting’ cream and an antihistamine tablet and see if that helps.

bloodywhitecat · 08/08/2019 14:51

Mollescum contagiosum?

TwattingDog · 08/08/2019 14:53

Looks like molloscum.

Urticaria (hives)... needs an anti histime for a few days that should knock it down.

Just kneeling down on some plants can do this for me on knees/legs.. A friend's gets this to some foods.sunlight can cause as well....

Littlebelina · 08/08/2019 14:55

Doesn't look quite right for molluscum to me. Ds's were more pronounced small bumps. Looks like hives\reaction to something like red says and her advice is pretty much what I would have said since your son is old enough for hydrocortisone

Podwoman888 · 08/08/2019 14:58

I'd also go for molluscum contagiosum.

Aqueo517 · 08/08/2019 15:01

I don’t know what it is but don’t panic at the molluscum diagnosis. Mumsnet did the same when I queried a strange rash and it wasn’t Molluscum at all.

spacepoodle · 08/08/2019 15:14

Has he knelt on some stinging nettles?

Icequeen01 · 08/08/2019 15:32

That definitely looks like hives to me so Im guessing she has touched something with her knees that she is allergic or sensitive to. Definitely not mollescium. My DS used to have those and they are more like raised hard spots.

Dauphinois · 08/08/2019 15:51

I'm not convinced it's molloscum - I work in a primary school so I'm pretty familiar with all manner of rashes!

I'll see how it goes. It doesn't seem to be bothering him too much so I'll probably leave it well alone and see what happens. Thanks all.

Ohhhh grass rash!
That takes me back.
Don’t know what it is really (allergy, minor irritation, what), but as a kid if I sat on grass that was me.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 08/08/2019 15:59

I would say grass rash too.

Justgivemesomepeace · 08/08/2019 16:03

Its an allergic reaction. Antihistamines twice daily, hydrocortisone cream if youve got it, moisturise.

Dauphinois · 09/08/2019 15:13

Still not convinced about this rash. It doesn't look like hives. The shin is starting to feel quite thickened and is now starting to appear on his elbows.

My other kids are very atopic and we've had any number of eczema / hives / viral rashes but this feels....different Confused

  • skin is feeling thickened, not shin!

Does he have gluten sensitivity or coeliac disease?

Dauphinois · 09/08/2019 15:18

Nope

Dauphinois · 09/08/2019 15:19

On his legs it's confined to his knees, not spreading any further.

Not sure if it will help, but my mum has psoriasis on elbows and knees and it looks exactly like that 🤷🏼‍♀️

Dauphinois · 09/08/2019 15:35

Hmm, it might be. It's certainly getting thickened like psoriasis does. I think I'll book an appt for Monday to check him out.

DearGoodnessIsThatTheTime · 09/08/2019 16:26

It’s probably not ... but coeliac can present with an unexplained itchy knee rash.
Google Dermatitis Herpetiformis. I’m not any expert - just happen to retain that fact.

Podwoman888 · 09/08/2019 17:00

OP, there is no need to worry unduly about molluscum contagiosum as it is a self-limiting harmless viral infection that clears up in a few months without specific treatment.
However, if you are concerned, please see the GP if you want a definitive diagnosis. Here are some pictures; www.dermnetnz.org/topics/molluscum-contagiosum-images/ HTH

TheSheepofWallSt · 09/08/2019 21:42

Do you know that looks a lot like psoriasis now... get to the GP. It can be a bitch to manage.

Cally70 · 09/08/2019 21:51

My DS had something quite similar that started on his elbows but then went to his knees. The GP didn't seem to know but prescribed a steroid cream and that shifted it

It will probably be hand foot and mouth. Can be elbows/knees. Check his mouth, and how is he is himself?
