Anyone else starting to realise that they're a bit 'old fashioned' the more they're on MN?

Or maybe I've just stopped giving such a shit about what people think of me? Though I'm unsure if this is true as I have been a rampant people pleaser all my life, but maybe I just care a wee bit less.

I don't think it's cool or funny that kids swear at their parents. ('Don't they all'? No).

I do think it's shit to let kids sit on various devices for a majority of the
day - although I get that sometimes it happens.

I also want comfort dammit. I want comfortable shoes, comfortable chairs and a lovely cup of tea with a scone.

I roll my eyes so far back into my head at the various #bollocks I see on social media (which I quite like actually).

I also appear to be getting a bit fucking judgemental and I'm not sure I even care.

Do I need to put 'lighthearted' on this? OK. .

I am very old fashioned

I have never had a one night stand, never slept around
I like comfy clothes, do not follow fashion or the music charts
I like reading and sci fi TV shows, no idea even what LoveIsland is
Children need rules, boundaries and routine and dare I say, a mother and a father and a stable upbringing

FiveLittlePigs · 06/08/2019 12:47

I'm with you, OP.
Comfort goes a long way.
Manners too.
You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Small courtesies (hold the door for someone, asking if people mind before a window is opened, letting someone with one item in front at the supermarket till etc) and a bit of give and take make the world a far nicer less stressful place.

Nothing needs to be a confrontation, if you need to ask a neighbour to not do something just ask nicely, a lot of the time people just haven't realised they're being slightly intrusive and will happily move the car, turn the music down etc without any angst. True there are people out there who just don't care and won't accede to a pleasant request but you can usually tell who they are!

SoMuchToBits · 06/08/2019 12:51

I am also very old-fashioned. I don't wear fashionable clothes, I just wear the things which I like and are comfortable, and keep them for years.

I don't own a smartphone, just a cheap basic mobile phone, which I don't use much.

I make tea in a teapot with tea leaves.

I use small independent shops (butchers, bakers, greengrocers) because I like to speak to actual people when I shop.

If I go out for the day I usually take a flask of tea with me!

I do old-fashioned things like cross stitch and make some of my own clothes.

Chakano · 06/08/2019 12:53

I'm old fashioned too.
I hate most tv, have never used childcare, family first priority before work, which has to fit in with the family.
Don't have monthly subscriptions sky, netflix, all the other bollocks people have.
I love listening to the radio, CD's and even vinyl.
Work for the money we need then stop, don't earn much surplus for a high disposable income. Don't pay out for beauty products and treatments apart from hair cut.

Queenbean · 06/08/2019 12:53

Wow. Didn’t take long for “old fashioned” to become “bigoted and offensive”

Yes! There seems to be an assumption that everyone is being an arsehole on purpose rather than perhaps just not realising that they may have been a little thoughtless. 'Rip em a new one!' or similar seems to be first response. I don't have the energy.

My eyes roll out my head when I see anything about Love island i found myself being a bit Nan tate and say whataloadof shit ! I can't get my head around it's popularity , I had babies 20+ years ago nobody wants my wisdom advice it is regarded as old fashioned

SoMuchToBits · 06/08/2019 13:10

I'm another one who still listens to the radio and CDs. I can't get my head round all this streaming.

And totally with you all about being polite and reasonable with people. There seems to be a lot of anger and rage about these days. Lots of threads on MN where people are raging, fuming, livid or furious.

I think I prefer an old-fashioned slightly cross or marginally irritated. Grin

This is so true.

AIBU...

Replies - call the council / log it with 101

Sensible reply - have you considered just talking to them and asking...

Mrsjayy · 06/08/2019 13:16

Wtf is this logging all about ring the police and log do people think call handlers have a special spreadsheet to log annoyances !

ginghamstarfish · 06/08/2019 13:16

Agree, but I think 'old fashioned' people don't need to swear all the time, there are other words to use! Swearing seems very popular on MN, so not sure how that fits ...

SmartPlay · 06/08/2019 13:18

@SoMuchToBits "I don't own a smartphone, just a cheap basic mobile phone, which I don't use much."

And I thought I was the only one :)
I didn't even get a smartphone when I, about a year ago, managed the unmanageable - I crushed an old Nokia!

ProfessorSlocombe · 06/08/2019 13:19

Wtf is this logging all about ring the police and log do people think call handlers have a special spreadsheet to log annoyances !

But they do.

SoMuchToBits · 06/08/2019 13:23

SmartPlay, my old Nokia died when it got wet! I managed to dry it out so it would work, but it wouldn't charge up properly after that. That was about 3 years ago, and I replaced it with a cheap basic Samsung PAYG phone. It does calls and texts. That's all I need.

BenWillbondsPants · 06/08/2019 13:47

You're right @ginghamstarfish, but I'm very guilty of it myself. 😂

SoMuchToBits · 06/08/2019 13:50

The other old fashioned thing I do is borrow books from the library. I know hardly anyone else who does that these days.

Bravelurker · 06/08/2019 14:06

@BenWillbondsPants, yes I know exactly what you mean, fellow life long people pleaser here. Peri menopause is so freeing and I'm finding myself loving all of the batshit crazy older lady characters in films and dramas.
I want to be Olive Kitteridge when I grow up Grin.

bilbodog · 06/08/2019 14:23

Ive just had a home made scone with clotted cream and strawberry jam 😃

Bravelurker · 06/08/2019 15:22

I have just lurked on the pokemon thread and I feel like I have miscalculated my time machine and I have arrived 200 years into the future instead of 200 hours Grin.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 06/08/2019 15:25

Totally with you, OP. I've always been a bit of a fogey - even when I was a kid.

TreacherousPissFlap · 06/08/2019 15:33

But they don't professorslocombe Wink

SoMuchToBits · 06/08/2019 15:42

Oh, I send postcards from my holidays too. That's old-fashioned apparently.

ProfessorSlocombe · 06/08/2019 15:43

But they don't professorslocombe

All calls to 101/111/999 are recorded - so logged by default. Along with the calling number and any other details the tech can pull out of the network where available (Location, call box, mobile network, subscriber details, VOIP defined location ...)

I will concede that the logs may not be into a spreadsheet, and that they aren't entered manually by the operator (although the salient details will be entered by hand). But all calls are logged, believe you me.

Pinkout · 06/08/2019 17:05

I have honestly never heard anyone say it’s fine for kids to swear at all. Profanities sound utterly vile from a child’s mouth and I’d be disgusted if my DC swore. I don’t think it’s old fashioned to think children shouldn’t swear.

Pinkout · 06/08/2019 17:08

@SoMuchToBits we have hundreds of books but still borrow from the library too. My DC do the summer reading challenge every year, I believe it’s quite popular in my local library.
