Self catering holiday tomorrow - what have I forgotten?

As I've got a horrible feeling there's something missing!

I've:

  • organised a food delivery,
  • remembered corkscrew, extension cable, sharp knife,
  • packed extra towels,
  • clothing and entertainment stuff sorted.
  • PIL looking after house so no worries there.

What's missing?!!

We usually take mugs as I can't cope with the piddly cups and saucers you sometimes get.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 26/07/2019 12:04

Kitchen sink? 😬

Medicaltextbook · 26/07/2019 12:12

Favourite toy or game
Print out of the contact details and booking and details of what is supposed to be there.

Kazzyhoward · 26/07/2019 12:15

Doesn't self catering places come with everything anyway.

No, they're very random as to what they do/don't provide. Only the best ones actually give a pretty detailed list on their website of the fundamentals.

We've arrived to find a single dishwasher table and a single black bin bag. At another, there wasn't a bottle opener nor cork-screw. Sometimes you get loads of loo rolls, other times, it's just the one. Baking trays are another - a full sized oven with 2 shelves but just one baking tray. We take a load of stuff with us, including a pizza tray for the oven, big and small bin bags, small bags of dishwasher tables and washing powder, small bottle of washing up liquid, small pots of tea, coffee, and sugar, etc.

Kazzyhoward · 26/07/2019 12:16

How about a torch, matches, small tool kit, fuses, batteries, etc?

MyDcAreMarvel · 26/07/2019 12:16

Immodium

Eaudear · 26/07/2019 12:18

I'm going on a self catering holiday in a couple of weeks and was just planning on turning up!

Tool kits? Fuses?!

hopeishere · 26/07/2019 12:29

I'd not bother with tools or fuses!!

We take kitchen rolls, loo roll and a few dishwasher tablets I really hate places that give you two. So mean.

Geraniumpink · 26/07/2019 12:31

We just get whatever food we need when there. Although having read the list a good sized chopping board and proper mugs might be nice....

BruceAndNosh · 26/07/2019 12:31

Gin.

I find most self-catering places never provide enough gin

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 26/07/2019 12:32

Foil
Rubber gloves
Kitchen roll
Sauce
Salt/pepper/vinegar

TeamUnicorn · 26/07/2019 12:39

Doesnt self catering places come with everything anyway

ROFL. We didn't get a baking tray the last time, or a grater, or a colander.

Some things we've been short of over the years include a measuring jug, potato peeler, whisk, and often the things there are broken.

I always take extra pegs, a folding laundry basket (£ land style) and my 2p collection.

TeamUnicorn · 26/07/2019 12:41

I always take a small bottle of washing up liquid, a jay cloth, a kitchen sponge and a pan cleaner. Most times they aren't needed but don't take up too much room.

I always take a bath sheet as well for DH as most times you just get a bath towel which, at 6 ft 2 is just rubbish for him.

Pipandmum · 26/07/2019 12:43

To book a full service hotel.

AdaColeman · 26/07/2019 12:47

Tin opener/bottle opener
Cooks Matches
Pack of cards
Travel wash liquid
Talc for sandy feet!

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 26/07/2019 12:49

We always take wine glasses because the ones provided are invariably tiny Blush

LizzieMacQueen · 26/07/2019 13:02

Cheese grater

Iamblossom · 26/07/2019 13:04

LOL @Pipandmum

inappropriateraspberry · 26/07/2019 13:07

Antibacterial wipes, a good frying pan. Nothing worse than stuck on eggs in the morning! Loo roll, dishwasher tablets and washing powder/tabs.

GiantKitten · 26/07/2019 13:08

Doesn't self catering places come with everything anyway. And there is always a supermarket

Even if they start out with “everything”, people have different expectations of “everything” & anyway things go missing/break (our last cottage had 8 eggcups - 8!!! - but only 5 side plates)

KatharinaRosalie · 26/07/2019 13:13

I use holiday villas quite often, in one right now, and would certainly not expect to bring my own washing sponges or laundry baskets. One would not get a great review if they didn't have enough plates or I had to bring my own loo roll.

If the place is such that you really need to bring your entire kitchen and laundry room then I agree, book a hotel.

FreddiesMammy · 26/07/2019 13:14

Dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, loo roll, toilet roll, extra towels.

GiantKitten · 26/07/2019 13:16

My list depends whether flying or driving, but in UK it always includes

2-3 plastic storage boxes with lids
roll of food bags & a few klippits
fly spray
bluetooth speaker
small keyring torch (for finding keyholes in the dark)
oven gloves
a proper cellulose washing-up sponge/scourer (I loathe those non-absorbent nylon things with a passion)
couple of small bin liners for dirty laundry

GiantKitten · 26/07/2019 13:18

There are never enough mugs either, & glasses can be thin on the ground too. (I think caretakers are a bit too busy to do an inventory every week, unfortunately.)

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 26/07/2019 14:24

And spray oil!
