Self catering holiday tomorrow - what have I forgotten?

As I've got a horrible feeling there's something missing!

I've:

  • organised a food delivery,
  • remembered corkscrew, extension cable, sharp knife,
  • packed extra towels,
  • clothing and entertainment stuff sorted.
  • PIL looking after house so no worries there.

What's missing?!!

Slow cooker?!

timeforawine · 26/07/2019 14:30

Cooking oil

HerLadySheep · 26/07/2019 14:31

Oven gloves! Never any oven gloves and I hate trying to use tea towels to get things out of the oven, thus burning my hands

ithinkiammelting · 26/07/2019 16:37

If the place is such that you really need to bring your entire kitchen and laundry room then I agree, book a hotel

Really? That's out of a lot of people's price range. We're not all talking about luxury villas or delightful thatched cottages. I'm guessing that KatharinaRosalie has never had to spend her holiday in a budget caravan Grin

Ormally · 26/07/2019 17:07

Bowls/plates and cutlery of the right dimensions for small DC (if required)
Bite and sting cream, plasters suitable for rubbed areas of feet!

hopeishere · 26/07/2019 17:38

I barely use a measuring jug, potato peeler and whisk at home. There's no chance I'd use them on holiday!!

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 26/07/2019 17:42

A thermometer and calpol/paracetamol

EggysMom · 26/07/2019 17:48

You might want to pack some clothes ...

Douberry · 26/07/2019 18:14

Oh I love a self catering packing list!

  • Loo roll
  • Kitchen roll
  • some extra snuggly slippers (or practical flip flops...in case the floors / bathroom is less than spick and span)
  • tea towels
  • all purpose spray and roll of j cloth
  • washing up liquid and sponge

OK I sound like a clean freak... I'm better off in a hotel which is so germy it's not even worth trying

TSSDNCOP · 26/07/2019 18:22

I only need to read these lists to book another AI. Fuses!

Leggyfrog · 26/07/2019 18:37

Cool bag and iceblocks for picnics

KatharinaRosalie · 26/07/2019 18:53

ithink you are right, I haven't, I'm in a lovely villa in Dordogne that has everything. That does not mean I haven't travelled on a tiny budget, but I don't think I would go for a budget caravan if I had to do it again, they don't sound too appealing based on this thread.

Oliversmumsarmy · 26/07/2019 19:42

I am amazed how much people take.

When we go I only pack clothes and toiletries.

If I had to bring loo roll or towels I would certainly not be too impressed at the place.

Every holiday let we have been in has been better stocked than my own house

TeamUnicorn · 26/07/2019 19:58

That's great, but apart from the fact I quite like an Angel Delight on holiday, we are limited in places to go out to due to the autistic child, so we have to cook.

FossiPajuZeka · 26/07/2019 20:56

The list of things we forgot this time were Calpol, DVDs and any toys at all (excluding night time fluffies which is obviously a separate category). In previous years I have forgotten pants, earplugs, any tops at all for DS, wellies, and multi-plugs (often only enough sockets in the master bedroom for 2 bedside lamps, the baby monitor cradle and one phone recharger. If we both want our phones we need a multiplug.)

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 26/07/2019 21:12

We take knives, extra towels, bin bag for dirty laundry, toilet rolls and the kitchen gadgets that are used regularly at home.

I expect the owners to provide cleaning materials etc. I expect extra blankets in case the weather is cold and I want efficient Wi-fi, decent TV and sufficient good quality crockery, cutlery, glassware and furniture.

The last place we stayed in was the opposite. It was not a success. Needless to say, despite asking several times for a review, the one we gave hasn’t been published. Last year, the place was delightful.

mummydummyabc · 26/07/2019 21:21

Kitchen surface cleaner
Air freshener
Own pillows
Board game
Couple of dvds
Wine!

twilightcafe · 26/07/2019 21:28

For Eurocamp:

Decent knives
Chopping board
Knife sharpener
Multipurpose cleaner
Cloths
3in1 dishwasher tabs
Washing up liquid
Rubber gloves
Bin bags
Proper mugs

Clothes pegs
Salt
Pepper
Chilli sauce - its never hot enough in France

I know you can buy these things at French supermarkets but I resent doing so if I have plenty at home. And the euro/£ rate is shocking.

We also like to bring our own pillows and duvets. I don't like those Eurocamp thin quilts.

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/07/2019 17:14

I don’t own half the stuff people list.

I don’t own a chopping board, tea towels or a knife sharpener let alone clothes pegs or a measuring jug

As for air freshener, why ? I am a firm believer it makes you depressed. Surely opening a window would do the same job

MyDcAreMarvel · 27/07/2019 17:32

I don’t own a chopping board, tea towels or a knife sharpener let alone clothes pegs or a measuring jug
So how do you chop or measure or dry non dishwasher items?

GiantKitten · 27/07/2019 19:00

Presumably you have staff or you live with your mum Confused

GiantKitten · 27/07/2019 19:02

Or you live on ready meals and eat them out of the plastic tray with disposable cutlery?

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/07/2019 19:07

I can't remember the last time I used a tea towel to dry anything, they are used to take stuff out if the oven and train food. Dishwasher or air dry here. Last self-catering place was well equipped but we forgot tea/coffee/sugar cubes. I like my own.

GiantKitten · 27/07/2019 20:03

We don’t use tea towels for regular old-fashioned “you wash, I’ll dry” type drying either.

But for drying hands, rinsing/drying during cooking, occasionally mopping counters Angry (not by me obv Grin), drying random plastic bags before adding to recycling etc...I have more than half a dozen used regularly in rotation.

Can’t imagine not using them, ever.

Are people wasting kitchen roll instead? Hmm

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/07/2019 22:05

No definitely don't live with my mother.

Never owned a tea towel.

We have a dishwasher now so dishes etc always come out dry and before the dishwasher we let plates etc drain

I don't like tea towels I think they are a germ magnet
Should say we have never had a stomach bug ever

I measure everything by eye so never needed a measuring anything.

Never used a knife sharpener

And instead of a chopping board I either use a plate or chop over the pan

Dc find it fascinating when they visit friends and see a fridge full of food

Dc say I am like a disinterested student when it comes to cooking.
