stupid fucking things you did as a teenager...

Not as in sex/drugs/alcohol or whatever but just general ridiculousness. I used to:

  • leave my straighteners ON every morning so they'd be on ALL DAY just so when I came in from school they would be hot enough to re-straighten my hair immediately. Confused God forbid I go twenty seconds with unstraightened hair. When I think of the fire risk!!!!
  • Refuse to wear my coat even in 3 degree weather because it wasn't cool to wear your coat
  • Carry my PE kit to school in a JD sports bag because that was the done thing, despite having a perfectly good rucksack
  • At one point, teeny tiny little Nike "just do it" backpacks were in but they weren't big enough to fit any of your stuff in. So I used to carry on e about (which just held my pencil case and my keys) and carry all my books seperately in my arms

I can't wait til my son is that age and starts doing equally daft things.

Changed into non uniform neon socks and shoes after I' d left home to go to school; took 3 buses and a long diversion to school, just to pass the bus stop for the boys school; had a perm.

HappyActivist · 26/07/2019 06:42

Hitch hiking.

Scares me now thinking about it but at the time I thought I was just saving bus fare.

Frazzledstar1 · 26/07/2019 07:04

Lengthen the straps of my backpack so it hung as low down my back as possible as was the trend at the time

Tie my hair in a ponytail, Smother it in hairspray and slick back with a Comb!

Wear skirt trousers to school.

Homemadelife · 26/07/2019 07:32

Black everything - hair, makeup, clothes, DM's and cider and black. Plaited hair with black candle wax on the end and small brass bells.

Hitching a lift round a Greek island with a load of older blokes and skinny dipping with them in the early hours of the morning.

Skipping school to do drugs or get drunk then wondering why I failed my Alevels.

Plastic bags from the cool record shop in town, hand painted doc martens, purple hair dye hair mouse that decorated the bathroom wall in our rented house.

Going clubbing in a body suit that I couldn't undo and not being able to go to the toilet all night!!

Sleepsoon7 · 26/07/2019 09:07

Ha - curly perm but a few years later a v short hair style with longer hair on top in a tight perm. When it started to grow out I looked like I had a resting gerbil on my head.
Also green mascara and mauve mascara as well as blue mascara - matching whatever colour clothes I was wearing.
Skinny jeans came in but my mum refused to buy me any. I cut the inside legs of some very flared jeans and sewed them up - then went ice skating, also wearing a baggy lilac cowl neck jumper. The badly sewn inner seam of my jeans coupled with the sweat generated skating in a jumper fit for theArctic gave me horrendous inner thigh rub. I was in agony walking home from the tube.

This thread has been a joy to read!

-used to pull my hair into a ponytail and leave front dangly bits around my face, with about a whole can of hairspray in them.
-thought it’d be funny to drop water balloons from a bridge onto cars going underneath. I often shudder in shame to think about that, wtf were we thinking, we could have killed someone!!! Sad
-tucked laces down the side of school shoes rather than tie them properly.
-plucked my eyebrows so much that they never ever grew back properly.

  • broke into a building site with two brothers I was mates with. They were throwing stones as these greenhouses in there, then setting fire to the yellow pages. Some blokes turned up and we had to give fake names before we left. Thankfully they didn’t call the police. As I was cycling away I fell off my bike and my leg got caught up in it. One of the blokes who caught us had to come and help me up! Oh god. Grin

Late seventies here .. I used to see a lad from school, he was very good looking and I remember most of the girls fancying him!
I could see his house at the top of a hill from mine at the bottom and we used to flash our bedroom lights at each other, and I mean it would go on till around midnight when were 15 years old, crazy really but I really liked him.
He now lives in Canada (Alberta) and he made contact with me a couple of years ago via Facebook, very strange feeling after 37 years. We had a good chat but that was it. Happy memories of a time gone by x

Shockers · 26/07/2019 11:01

My friend and I would (badly) apply a full face of makeup to go to the phone box and phone boys from our class Grin

Fairyhill · 26/07/2019 12:53

I turned from a normal kid at 14 who was made to wear what clothes my nan thought I d look nice in.. box pleated skirts. In lemon and white .. example.

To mini skirts - big white over shirts. Over little tops.. or my grandads ( 6 ft 3 grandad ) jackets and waist coats with massive jeans and dotty P’s office shirts.. of course I lived in my Docs! 🤣
Had the big permed hair . Red lips , skipped school , went to the pub , scared my mother by not coming home from school or college so I could go out with my mates. ( where did I get the money from?! )
Drinking - hitch hiking - drinking with strangers .. walking home at 3 am from clubs in birmingham .. on my own?? How am I still even a live ?! I remember my yellow and orange clothing phase - I have base toned yellow skin so I spent the year looking like I had liver disease .. but I thought I looked the bomb with my pink eye shadow and my pink lilac rimmel lipstick! ( upped my game to red once I started wearing grandads tweed jackets 🤣)

Fairyhill · 26/07/2019 12:54

Oh and we joy rode cars.. but always followed the laws of driving !! But nearly turned a mini over because someone from school jumped in front of the car!!

My mother can laugh now... shakily 🤣

Hushhush89 · 26/07/2019 12:57

I remember in yr 11 I use to walk around with the tinest bag (I still have it) all I could fit into it was 10 fags, lighter, lunch money and somehow forced my bus pass. One assembly my head of year took it off me walked to the front and started telling everyone this was not acceptable to use for school. I was so scared he was going to open it up and take my smokes away....

notbloodylikely · 26/07/2019 14:18

Some notable points:
Full head bleach job that I then spent years growing out and dyeing my hair with Ha-ha Harmony to cover up the regrowth. Then straight in to Sun-In and scrunch-dried moussed-to-fuck perm with quiff.

General teenage idiocy of course. Including hanging out with some proper ruffians, some of whom were MUCH older than us.

Cider.

Eyebrow tweazing, although luckily they did grow back in time for the bushy Supermodel era.

Wearing a dark bra under school shirt and thinking I was the last word in allure.

A school skirt so short it could barely be seen and I'd roll my eyes out of my head when told to tuck shirt in. And because my skirt was a Lycra tube, I couldn't really tuck the shirt in without serious bunching up issues.

Shit loads of make up including practically white foundation.

Goforitgirl · 26/07/2019 14:32

Girls still wear such short skits to school nowadays. I’m agog as I pass them.

CookPassBabtridge · 26/07/2019 14:40

Only washed my hair every two weeks as the slick unpuffy hair look was in, looking back at pictures it looked so greasy! Aged 18 I started watching every day and haven't looked back Grin
Used to go to my friends after school homework club just because my crush was there.. I didn't do that subject!
My tea regularly consisted of 20 potato smileys and gravy..

Muddledupme · 26/07/2019 14:58

I had short hair with a pony tail as thin as a pencil hanging down the back. I used to plait it so i looked doubly ridiculous as the hair band would be twisted round it ten times as it was so skinny. I also wore pedal pushers with over the knee socks. Not only did they look stupid I had to pull the socks up with every third step.

olbndansmummy · 26/07/2019 19:01

Oh my god! The rat tail! I had one of those too!

theWarOnPeace · 26/07/2019 19:58

Oh god I’ve just remembered the stupidest of all of the stupid things I did! I’m white and had a phase of hanging around with a really cool group of black girls, until one of them moved and the group kind of broke away from one another. I still live close to one of the girls now, so we catch up and reminisce once in a while. They were just so cool and listened to amazing music and danced to their hearts content and I idolised them. They used to do their hair in these little curls and finger waves around their faces and I used to do it too! God the horror thinking that I ever did that, what a fucking idiot. They never minded at all and did it for me, but I don’t think looking back that my white-blonde hair in a black style was appropriate really at all. My mum never batted an eyelid. I used to bop along to TLC with them thinking we were all the same. Never heard the words cultural appropriation at age 11!

WorriedMamabear2000 · 26/07/2019 20:33

hairglitter I'm thinking you're similar in age to me from your opening post! The JD sports bags...just why did we do this?! The ridiculously tiny Nike bags 🙈 lol!

AnneOfCleavage · 26/07/2019 20:50

We were mad for puffy trainers where the tongue was lifted so high and the laces tied inside to accentuate the puffiness. This was also when shell suits were fashionable - I had an Umbro one, eek! My DH says now that shell suits were never fashionable and it's true but it was also true that it was the fashion for our age group to wear them.

I also had a pair of Buffalos which I adored but they stank if you wore them sock less.

Also pierced my ring finger nail and had a dangly nail ring hanging off it. Thought I was the bees knees.

A permed fringe with straight long rest of hair- OMG.

My sis only wore her hair in a pony tail and would cut the ends so the ponytail would be the same length but she found it hard to put the ponytail in the same height so would cut the tail most days to make it straight. Was such a mess.

Getting lifts home from the clubs with random guys I'd chatted up - I lived miles from the clubs but I never had to do anything apart from say thank you and a quick peck kiss. What was I thinking. I have a teenager now and dread to think of her doing similar.

anitagreen · 26/07/2019 20:53

Crap photo I was like 14 here did anyone have them stupid shutter sunglasses that you couldn't actually see through but you wore them on your head? And the grey knee tight/socks with everything this must of been around 2008

anitagreen · 26/07/2019 20:58

And yes that is a cow boy hat hanging of my bed Blush

Scoleah · 26/07/2019 21:03

I once had a blue tooth Gem, couldn't wait to show it off, I kept smiling to show it off; and the gem had fell off and left the Brown backing on my tooth Blush

Kappa tracksuits

I also had a Backwards watch, and remember being known as the backwards watch girl going into Year 7 and people asking to see it Grin I still have it now over 18 years later

Sunburntnoseandears · 26/07/2019 21:23

Omg just remember that we used to ring hairdressers and ask if they cut public hair!!
And go ask at the corner shop of they sold Golden Virgina tobacco!!
OMG I am sat cringing!!

Fanciedachange1 · 26/07/2019 21:44

This thread is bringing back so many memories! I remember pale blue powder eye shadow with pink sticky lip gloss, those little butterfly hair grip things and hair mascara!

In my emo phase i had the flared jeans, including a pair mum got me from the market. They didnt have changing facilities so the guy measured my waist with a tape measure and squeezed it so hard i could barely breathe. The jeans had no stretch in them and when i got home i couldnt get them on one leg let alone over my hips!

I remember msn and how you would log out and in to keep popping up on your crushes computer!

Scoleah · 26/07/2019 22:04

Omg Butterfly clips Yes!
I remember going to Youth club on a Friday night and paying £1 to have my Hair In Twists, with the spikey bits of hair at the back! My mam would spray hair spray in there and it would last the Week.
Would always add the butterfly clips!
