Need a new mattress! Can you recommend one?

I've just realised that our trusty memory foam/latex mattress is 20 years old. I'm fed up with feeling crap in the morning! I suppose I'll have to go and lay on one in a shop, but what can ypu recommend? Budget about 800 ((weeps))

We have an igel mattress from benson for beds that I just adore. Nothing else came close for me. We have actually just ordered another for a new bed. Worth putting something in your basket and going all the way through the checkout but not completing and waiting 24 hours as they sometimes give you a code or something even on sale stuff.

I have a Loaf "perfect" mattress. Super king, firm (not super firm), it was 1000 - smaller would be in budget. I love it. Very firm, very cool.

Given multiple users (+DH and often DCs too!) and daily use, it was excellent value.

Fibbke · 20/07/2019 07:13

Dh has sleep twitches Hmm so it needs to be one that won't wobble me when he does it (or it will end up costing considerably more in divorce fees)

Ikea Hovag. We have the firm one and it's the best mattress I've ever had. Pocket sprung, so I don't get disturbed when DH moves in his sleep.

Miljah · 20/07/2019 10:29

Avoid those gel memory foam ones that come rolled in a box, I think Emma or similar?

They feel great in the show room but once your body sinks into them at night, they sort of encase you like moulded packaging, so you don't move around in your sleep and end up with pressure areas!

We had to keep it for 30-40 night before we could exchange it. We now have one with springs and a gel topper which is better but still not as good as our old one was for years before it sagged; a conventional pocket sprung one with a built-in duvet like topper.

EnidButton · 20/07/2019 11:46

Not Hypnos. I've slept on 3 different Hypnos ones and they're all hard and horrible. Unfortunately one of them is our own and because it was stupidly expensive we're stuck with it for now. It's the softest one they do and it's still uncomfortable. Looking at reviews shows it's not just me. Avoid.

I've got a memory foam topper and a micro fibre filled topper which are both very good so whatever you go for definitely get a topper too.

MiniMum97 · 20/07/2019 15:03

I have an amazing mattress from cottonsafe mattresses in Devon. No flame retardants and made of natural materials. I have the Widecombe. Really comfortable and so much cooler than a memory foam.

MustardScreams · 20/07/2019 15:05

Ikea Hovag. It’s so bloody comfortable. I was wary because it is so reasonably priced, but I’d never buy another mattress now.

Nat6999 · 20/07/2019 15:30

I've got a shires sprung memory foam mattress, it is a mid priced mattress & the comfiest I have ever slept on. My mum has just bought a new mattress paid a fortune for it & ended up having to buy a memory foam topper as the mattress has caused her to end up in awful pain. Don't just buy the first one you try, go somewhere that has a large selection of different kinds.

always2ndbest · 20/07/2019 16:03

Another vote for ikeas Hovag mattress. For the price (under £200) I can't believe what a comfortable mattress and great nights sleep I get. My partner is a fidget and used to constantly disturb me, but now I don't feel him moving or end up hanging off the edge.

Hmmmbop · 20/07/2019 16:11

Do not get a Hyde and sleep one. Everyone I know who has one has had problems, including us.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 20/07/2019 16:18

Hovag as well. I weigh 120 kg, and it supports without restricting movement.

SandAndSea · 20/07/2019 16:43

Can I ask people who got the Hovag, did you all go for the firm?

@Hmmmbop I have one. It's too hard and was an expensive mistake. The zip on the cover split. They sent me a new one. But the bloody thing is so heavy and has no handles, so I can't put it on. I had to buy an expensive topper for it.

Glitteryfrog · 20/07/2019 17:38

We've got an Eve. They have them in Next to try.
The premier inn Hypnos is always good when you're staying there.

lumpy76 · 20/07/2019 18:10

Another vote for the IKEA Hovag it's so good and so reasonably priced we've replaced 3 of the kids mattresses with them too. 25yr guarantee too!! You can't go wrong! We've gone for firm.

hopefullyhelpfully · 20/07/2019 18:41

Ikea hokassen. It's lush. Went for medium firm as I'm sick of rock hard mattresses and seriously its insanely comfortable.
Good Which rating as well and doesn't need turning.

cookiemonster3 · 20/07/2019 18:42

We have a geltex which is springs then a gel topper. Weighs a ton which sucked moving house this week but well worth the hassle. Best nights sleep we have ever had after the initial getting used to it.

georgialondon · 20/07/2019 18:55

Oh I absolutely love Hypnos ones.

MustardScreams · 20/07/2019 19:25

I got the Hovag in medium firm, it’s ridiculously comfy.

TowerRingInferno · 20/07/2019 20:00

Emma mattress .

Just got one and its wonderful. It’s so comfortable that if I sit down on my bed in the middle of the day I can’t bear to get up and leave again.

ElizaPancakes · 20/07/2019 20:28

Ikea Hokkasen med firm. Sprung with topper.

I love it. £450 for a king size. It's really comfy.

ToeTouchingTitties · 20/07/2019 20:36

John Ryan - they do loads of different types, and have some on sale (that have minor blemishes). I suggest you have a look at their website. We have an Artisan Natural and it’s the most comfy bed I’ve ever slept in!

Firgoodnesssake · 20/07/2019 21:21

King Koil mattress. Find a supplier and try them out as there are several different types. I recently got one and it’s the most comfortable I’ve ever been
