Anyone used to get a spoonful of malt extract as a kid?

Spotted a jar in Holland and Barratt today and it reminded me my dad used to give us kids a spoonful a day. Not sure why? 🤔 Anyone else get given this and know what it was supposed to be used for? I almost bought a jar but decided it probably wouldn't taste how I remembered it Smile

Yes!!It was thick and delicious!

beanaseireann · 19/07/2019 08:49

Im wondering what was in that neon yellow Radiomulsion Shock
Neither the name or colour would inspire confidence.

beanaseireann · 19/07/2019 08:59

I've googled Radiomulsion.
It contained Vitamin A, C, D and two types of B vitamins.
Anyone else had it as a child ?

Babdoc · 19/07/2019 09:04

We had cod liver oil (vitamin D) rose hip syrup (vitamin C) and brewer’s yeast (vitamin B) as children. I found the rose hip sickly sweet, so always had the cod liver oil last to take the taste away!

Babdoc · 19/07/2019 09:07

Thinking back, we actually ate a very healthy diet 60 years ago, and didn’t need all those vitamin supplements. Modern kids probably have far greater need of them, living on junk food and ready meals!

Kanga used to give Roo some.

Booksandwine80 · 19/07/2019 18:29

Yes, my Nan always gave me some when I stayed at her house. I miss her Sad

lolaflores · 19/07/2019 18:31

Brewers yeast and cod liver oil. No idea what the yeast is all about. I thought yeast is the enemy nowadays

Huge shudder here...anyone get wormed? This pale pink liquid that was so foul it still make me heave. I thought it was for worms or that may have been my mothers hilarious sense of humor

Tensixtysix · 19/07/2019 18:36

Oh god! That's brought back memories. My mum used to make me have a tablespoon of cod liver oil every morning back in the 80s.
It was only over a particularly bad winter and we were all living at my grandmothers who lived in the Welsh valleys and only had a coal fire and an outside loo.
We had moved there after living in Switzerland for several years, where we had central heating and triple glazed windows and an indoor loo!
She thought the shock of being in Wales was going to be too much for me, I was 9.

Is malt extract the same thing that you can add to milkshakes?

ArtificialArctophile · 19/07/2019 19:52

Virol!! 😷
I remember the pink worm stuff too - was it a powder made up in water?! Disgusting stuff

lolaflores · 19/07/2019 20:39

Is that what it was called? Jesus christ it was truly shocking. I really struggled to drink it. Thought I would spew afterwards. No one else remembered it so I thought I was making it up.
Was it normal to worm kids?.
Only happened once but I remember it like it was this morning......ewwwwww

Rachelover40 · 19/07/2019 21:09

Yes, it was nice. Yum. I fancy some now.

From wiki: Malt is rich in Vitamins B-6 and 12, thiamine, folate, pantothenic acid, niacin and riboflavin. These B vitamins help in metabolizing carbs, protein and fat, and provide your body with energy throughout the day.

owlonabike · 19/07/2019 21:16

Was the worm stuff Pripsen granules? Came in a little metal tube, if I remember correctly.

Windygate · 19/07/2019 21:20

I use malt extract to make fruity malt loaves.

owlonabike · 19/07/2019 21:21

I loved the Lucozade, Haliborange and cod liver oil and malt. Agarol made me gag though. It was a gloopy mayonnaise- like concoction which I think was to keep you regular.

TickleMyTitsTilFriday · 19/07/2019 21:30

Ugh cod liver oil here too. On a dessert spoon Envy

SheSnapsThenSheFarts · 19/07/2019 21:31

My mother tried. Tried being the operative word. Vile muck

Nanamilly · 19/07/2019 21:35

I did and I hated it. My sister in the other hand loved it so she’d have my spoonful as soon as our father went to work.

I look back on those days with a very heavy heart.

SnakesAndStones · 19/07/2019 21:37

Yes, I was given it in the 1970s as I used to have bronchitis all the time and the doctor recommended it(!). It was absolutely vile and I can remember retching and shuddering. The thing that pisses me off the most is that my mother was a heavy smoker and used to smoke habitually in the house and the car. Er, maybe, just maybe, that was causing my chronic bronchitis, rather than a lack of B vitamins?

SheSnapsThenSheFarts · 19/07/2019 21:43

I remember Minadex as well, which was also rank. Haliborange though, loved THEM.....

Wonder if my mother thought her cooking was so bad she needed to top me up?

Cymbalon · 19/07/2019 21:52

Yes and I loved it. In the 80s I gave DD cod liver oil and metatone.

MsTSwift · 19/07/2019 21:54

My granny gave it to us. She had been a house mistress at a super posh boarding school and matron would give it to the “weedy” kids Grin
