Anyone used to get a spoonful of malt extract as a kid?

Spotted a jar in Holland and Barratt today and it reminded me my dad used to give us kids a spoonful a day. Not sure why? 🤔 Anyone else get given this and know what it was supposed to be used for? I almost bought a jar but decided it probably wouldn't taste how I remembered it Smile

Yes, malt extract, cod liver oil, Lucozade for medicinal purposes, junior aspirin. There was some horrid sticky green stuff for chilblains, Vick on your chest. Yuck.

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 17/07/2019 18:36

I used to have it as well, tasted lovely.

oldfatandtired1 · 17/07/2019 18:37

Virol, yes, loved it!

ChicCroissant · 17/07/2019 18:40

Ooh yes, loved it! Cod Liver Oil did taste terrible at first but got better as time went on.

ChicCroissant · 17/07/2019 18:41

Loved the malt extract, just to clarify. Not so keen on the cod liver oil but it did get better.

Ambydex · 17/07/2019 18:41

What did it taste like?

My mum had brewers' yeast tablets and we used to have fluoride tablets, which were ok.

Wonkybanana · 17/07/2019 18:43

Virol, Minadex and Haliborange for me. I liked them all.

Ursaminor · 17/07/2019 18:51

We got the cod liver oil, then a spoonful of the malt to take the taste away.

StandardPoodle · 17/07/2019 18:54

Brewer's Yeast tablets, Minadex and Rose Hip syrup. I loved them all!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 17/07/2019 18:54

Only when my Dad was doing his homebrew. And usually only then because I was hanging around like a beggar...

orangeshoebox · 17/07/2019 18:55

when poorly (colds/fever) we were given a tonic that tasted very metallic.

AwkwardSquad · 17/07/2019 18:57

Yes, loathed it. Brother liked it, though. Then we got vit b tablets instead - becosin forte or something along those lines. Anyone remember the concentrated orange juice?

shellistar · 17/07/2019 19:02

Oh god... I remember my mum left a jar of this in my baby brother's room and my sister and I decided to decorate his floor and walls and cot with it Blush

Terrifiedandregretful · 17/07/2019 19:04

Oh my goodness I loved it! It still tastes as good but now I have no self control and would eat the whole jar at once if I bought one so I stay away.

Grandadwasthatyou · 17/07/2019 19:12

Virol, which me and my sisters loved, and cod liver oil capsules, which we didn't.
My Mum would often find a squashed capsule under the kitchen table, we always blamed each other.
And lucozade with the orange crinkly cellophane which I used to love looking through. It tasted different then and you only got it if you were ill, never any other time.
Cow and gate milk in the 70's. I used to sneak a scoop when I was supposed to be making a bottle for my little brother, Delrosa rose hip syrup and the orange juice you got from the baby clinic.

Haworthia · 17/07/2019 19:14

My dear departed Nan’s favourite anecdote about my dad (born 1953) as a child was his love of Virol, which he would pronounce as “Birol”.

I’ve literally never heard anyone else talk about it before Grin

DogbertDogglesworth · 17/07/2019 19:36

My mum used to line us kids up in the kitchen every morning for a spoonful of cod liver oil before we sat down for breakfast.
On a Friday night before bed it was a spoonful of castor oil ' to keep you regular '
Don't ever mention that you've got tummy ache or the milk of magnesium came out. Kaolin and morph if that didn't work.

My mum hated us, I swear. 😭

longearedbat · 17/07/2019 19:47

Oh god, I hated Virol with a passion! My mother gave up after I hid every time she produced the bottle.
I was a sickly thin child so the doctor suggested I drank a pint of milk a day (in addition to any other milk I may have consumed). I was quite happy with that, along with haliborange, and my body weight in sweets if I'd been allowed.

Horsemad · 17/07/2019 21:09

We used to have Minadex which I hated! 😆

beanaseireann · 18/07/2019 08:26

The neon yellow stuff we got was called Radiemulsion or Radiomulsion.
What was in it ?????? Shock

balonzz · 18/07/2019 08:35

I too remember being given malt extract on a teaspoon. My mum also lined us kids up to dose us all. She then used to give a teaspoonful to the cat too.
Anyone else remember marzine tablets for travel sickness? They came in green black and white stripy tubes, maybe they're still made? If you didn't feel sick in the car on the way to Grans, you certainly felt sick after taking a marzine, ewww!

AwkwardSquad · 18/07/2019 11:34

She then used to give a teaspoonful to the cat too.

I love this, it creates a delightful mental image Grin

fussychica · 18/07/2019 11:42

Waiting for this thread to go VirolGrin

I used to love it along with the juice from the health clinic, haliborange and gripe water.
In fact, as a child I was a very, very fussy eater and often survived on milk and Virol.

AwkwardSquad · 18/07/2019 11:45

The juice from the health clinic must be what I’m remembering. It was a treat in our 70s childhood, we were easily pleased!

HighlandWorrier · 18/07/2019 13:33

Haha enjoying the comments glad others remember it too 😊
