Why can't some people stomach breakfast?

4hearts · 09/07/2019 08:38

Since being little my parents had to feed
me biscuits before school as I have never ever fancied eating breakfast I just can't eat as soon as I get up for a couple of hours.

DH however has to eat a bowl of cereal as soon as he gets up be it 3am or 11am! DS is the same.

Is there some physiological difference? I want to understand why some people are breakfast people and others aren't.

Could it be related to slow metabolism meaning you are still full from yesterday?

Definitely not still full from night before for me. Generally have dinner about 7pm and nothing else after that. Just don't really get 'hungry' until I'm up and about and moving, and so then maybe a hour or two later I'll have breakfast- usually when I get into work. Any earlier and it makes me feel sick

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 09/07/2019 08:41

I can’t face breakfast and one of my sisters is the same. Another one can eat her body weight before leaving the house.

Doubleraspberry · 09/07/2019 08:45

I almost never wake up with an appetite. I can often go through to dinner without really feeling hungry to be honest. This is not a MN ‘tiny appetite’ brag by the way - I am not slim and have been told on here before that I can’t possibly eat as little as I do and be as fat as I am - but I seem to lack normal hunger triggers.

Is it maybe because we're not 'morning people'? It takes me a good couple of hours before I feel properly awake and ready to start the day.

Breakfast is 'the day', my body is still clinging onto the illusion that it's still night time and I should be asleep...

Teddybear45 · 09/07/2019 08:53

People with good metabolisms get hungry in the morning and eat fewer calories overall across the day. Being slim doesn’t necessarily mean you have a great metabolism - you need to be active and have good muscle mass.

Scorpiovenus · 09/07/2019 08:54

Yea ive never eaten breakfast since I was about 13 :)

CallMeCarolDanvers · 09/07/2019 08:54

I am not small of appetite but I have been up since 5.30 and only just having something to eat, which is normal for me. I had dinner at 6 so not still full either.

BertieBotts · 09/07/2019 08:55

YY it's related to not being a morning person for me I think. It's not that I'm not hungry (often I'm very hungry) it's just it makes me feel sick to eat too soon.

Apparently people who are slow to wake up in the morning tend to have lower cortisol levels upon waking. Whether that has something to do with digestion, I don't know.

Enclume · 09/07/2019 08:56

I eat a decent sized meal at about 10pm at night then train early am. I don't get hungry or can't eat till about midday.

Iggly · 09/07/2019 09:01

Not sure. I’m a morning person though and breakfast is important to me.

However I don’t eat straight away and I think my dcs struggle to eat if they wake up late - they need a bit of wake up time first.

Funnily enough though if I wake up really early, I don’t need breakfast until my normal time.

Tyrotoxicity · 09/07/2019 09:01

My stomach just doesn't wake up most days. It did today; woke up with it feeling empty and gurgling so I ate breakfast. But normally it takes a while for it to decide that getting something in it might be useful, and then it's perfectly happy with a small slice of cheese until teatime.

Is it linked to the previous night's eating? Hmm. I had a bigger tea than intended last night, definitely stretched the stomach out past comfortable capacity, possibly feeling the lack today where I wouldn't normally because of that. And, having had an eating disorder and been very large in the past, I can attest that if you keep filling it to stretching point, the bloody thing expects you to keep doing so; and if you're never pushing capacity you rapidly stop feeling "hunger" when your body doesn't actually need food right now.

BertieBotts · 09/07/2019 09:01

Aha - according to google, yes - cortisol raises your appetite. Low cortisol = low appetite.

DinosApple · 09/07/2019 09:20

I'm not usually hungry in the mornings and I am a morning person, but I put it down to not really liking cereal and toast.

If proper food is available I soon find my appetite!

Hoppinggreen · 09/07/2019 09:23

I can’t usually eat until I’ve been up and about for a couple of hours, never have. Often I will not eat at all until 11 and have an early lunch. It’s not due to eating much the night before either as I rarely eat after 6
Dd is like me but DS and DH are ready for breakfast as soon as they wake up

BillywigSting · 09/07/2019 09:23

For me it depends on how tired I am when I wake up. If I have to drag myself out of bed because I've had bad/not enough sleep, I tend to not be hungry for quite a while. If I've had enough good sleep I wake up ravenous.

Grimbles · 09/07/2019 09:25

I'm not hungry in the morning and I'm not going to eat for the sake of it.

H2OH20Everywhere · 09/07/2019 09:26

I rarely have breakfast. If I do, I get the munchies about 11. If I don't I can happily last til 12 or 1 and still not really be hungry.

Cookit · 09/07/2019 09:26

I can wake up hungry but I can’t stomach food until I’ve had enough to drink.
I remember staying at a friend’s once and being shocked the way she was able to eat a full English without having had a single glass of water.

SushiForAmateurs · 09/07/2019 09:29

The morning is the only time of the day I don't have any appetite. If I do have breakfast, it kick starts my appetite and I get hungry mid-morning. If I don't have it, I'm fine to go through until lunch.

I'm very much a morning person and have a BMI of 20/21.

Sakura7 · 09/07/2019 09:29

I'm not a morning person but I will feel a bit hungry within about half an hour of getting up, and starving after an hour. I have to eat breakfast. The odd time I've been rushing around and didn't have time, I felt sick/faint once I went out.

My sister never eats breakfast though. Funny how different we all are.

HellYeah90s · 09/07/2019 09:32

I am an early bird and I literally can't function without a decent bowl of cereal in the morning (unless I had a massive dinner previous night) and a coffee Ever since I started school my mum made me have a bowl of cereal every morning on a weekday, 30 odd years later I still do it.

DH only really stomachs a banana or maybe some yogurt in the morning and that's after he has arrived at work. But he generally snacks on something late at night.

I do try and get my kids to eat breakfast every morning before school, they need energy, even if its a piece of toast. Thankfully they generally oblige.

And here we rarely do cooked breakfasts, maybe in the school hols I might do some pancakes.

YesQueen · 09/07/2019 09:36

I'm not a morning person but I don't feel awake until I've had a brew and breakfast.
I wake up hungry and could happily demolish pizza/full English/spaghetti within 10 mins of being awake Grin

BlueCornsihPixie · 09/07/2019 09:39

I'm just hungry all the time lol

I reckon a lot of it is just habit tbh

For me, if I don't eat breakfast it's not that I'm hungry it's that I'm sluggish and a bit gross feeling by about 10am. So I make sure I eat, it takes me about half an hour to be fully hungry but I can't imagine skipping breakfast every day! It's like my body doesn't completely wake up until I eat something. I can't imagine being physically unable to eat breakfast!

LeCreusetSilVousPlait · 09/07/2019 10:01

I’ve never eaten breakfast, even as a child I hated it.

I have a terrible habit of eating healthily all day and then binging at 9.30ish though.

Hoppinggreen · 09/07/2019 10:09

doubleraspberry that’s interesting. I’m overweight and have been told there’s no way I only eat what I claim to. I kept a food diary for my GP once and when I showed him he basically said I was lying or it wasn’t a typical month ( i was completely honest). I do eat too much and I’m very fond of crisps so I’m not totally delusional and claim to only survive on lettuce but I really don’t think I eat enough to be this overweight. We have a dog I walk 3times a day too bad do 10-15000 steps most days.
